The sentiments expressed in today s first reading seem to be a direct reaction to the Gospel passage we heard last week. In that Gospel, the landowner pays the same wages to his workers whether they worked for a full day or for only a few minutes. Today Ezekiel gives us the lament, The L s way is not fair! (Ezekiel 18:25). These Sundays in Ordinary Time offer us a glimpse into the ways of the Lord. We see how God s way has the tendency to turn the accepted conventions of the day upside down. Those who always expected that their way to heaven was guaranteed are disappointed. Those who thought they never had a chance are given that chance. Young people were baptized, confirmed, went to confession once a week and were firm in their beliefs. People raised during that period are still fairly strong in the practice of Catholicism, with over 55% still attending church weekly. However, among Catholics between 20 and 40, only 30% attend weekly. Millennials (those between 20 and 40) are leaving churches in large numbers. As many as 70 percent of those raised in a church leave by the time they are in their 20s and one-third of those under 30 in the United States claim to have no religion. Two-thirds of Catholic millennials attend Mass a few times a year or less often, compared to a majority of pre- Vatican II Catholics, who go at least once per week. Among millennials, only 25 percent say that they pray at least once a day, whereas 30% say they pray just a few times per year. Why is there such a difference between people raised half a century ago and those raised in more recent times? Of those who did not attend Catholic schools, just over a third of millennials say they were enrolled in religious education programs as children, compared to 50 percent or more of older Catholics. Among those who attended Catholic schools, the difference is even greater. Just one in ten millennial Catholics attended a Catholic primary school, compared to 54 percent of Catholics born in the 1940s and 50s. The number of students in Catholic schools today has dropped from 5.2 million in the 1960s to under 2 million today. What has caused this dramatic decline? Prior to Vatican II, the tension between Catholics and Protestants in this country was extremely high. Protestants considered Catholics as inferior beings, obedient to the Pope and non-thinking. Catholics didn t trust Protestants and didn t want their children to associate with them. Public schools were heavy with Protestant teachers and curriculum, so the Catholic nuns in this country began a Catholic schooling system. The early part of the last century was a time of limited wages and education. The nuns opened parish schools where a Catholic family could send their children for less than $5 per month. The nuns offered their services as educators and the Catholics responded strongly. As a result, Catholic children were indoctrinated from kindergarten to eighth grade and often beyond. They were truly raised in the faith. With the shift in attitudes after the Vatican council, the animosity and fear between religions was greatly reduced and Catholics began to look on Public schools more kindly. At the same time, the number of nuns available to teach was greatly reduced. In 1965, there were 180,000 nuns in this country. Today there are less than 50,000, with many beyond retirement age. Hiring lay teachers has sent the price of Catholic schools steadily higher and many of them have become private schools rather than Catholic schools. An example of how far this change has gone is shown by San Dominico School in Marin, the first Catholic school established in California. Recently there has been controversy over their removal of many of the statues of saints on the grounds. The reason they did so was to make their students feel more at home. San Dominico now has 80% non-catholic students. One hope in all of this is that the millennials may not be going to church, but the surveys show they still have belief. According to one survey, over 50% still abstain from meat on Fridays in Lent! ~DN

It has an interesting structural feature. The new prayers all nod toward the East with the epiclesis, or calling down of the Spirit, over the gifts. In this prayer the Spirit is asked to come down again, after the consecration, to make holy the communicants who partake of this one Bread and one Chalice that, gathered into one body by the Holy Spirit, they may truly become a living sacrifice in Christ to the praise of your glory. This beautiful phrase is well worth meditating on. What is the goal of your reception of Holy Communion today? The preface for this Eucharistic Prayer is firmly attached to the prayer, and the directives for using the prayer anchor it to Ordinary Time. It is not intended to be an option if the Mass has a proper preface of its own, like a funeral, a Lenten weekday, or a great feast. It is not often used these days, in part because of these limitations. At first, it was suggested that this prayer was better suited to small groups of people who were well educated in scripture.
