In the spirit of the Joy of the Gospel we work together promoting Catholic values and teachings. Our parish encourages a strong devotion to our Blessed Mother Mary, who gives us an example of faithful discipleship and a generous stewardship way of life.

3 FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora It is an honor for our parish to be hosting the Archdiocesan training for Eucharistic Ministers and Lectors sponsored by the Office of Worship of our Archdiocese of San Francisco this weekend (Saturday). To be a minister of these important Liturgical ministries is not simply being able to give communion or read the Lectionary or the Readings. These ministers need to have a better understanding of what they are doing. This is a true story! A nervous Lector reads the First Reading. Instead of saying, A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Philippians, she said, A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the PHILIPPINES. She got so nervous that instead of saying at the end The Word of the Lord, she said, This is the END of the WORLD. Look around the world! For some, especially for doomsday prophets, there are sign that the world is coming to an end. But for us believers, there is so much to pray for these days. Natural calamities have plagued one after the other: Hurricane Harvey in Houston, Hurricane Irma in Florida and Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic; then the 7.1 Magnitude earthquake in Mexico. We pray for the victims and their families. It is hard to prevent natural calamities even if you argue that you can by controlling the global warming. Sometimes, if not most of the time, you have no means of preventing them to happen. But there are things that we can do to control and prevent from happening like accidents or crime in the neighborhood. Recently, we had reports of crime in the neighborhood from home burglary to school invasion, from breaking car s window to taking the whole truck full of tools and valuable equipment, from snatching and robbery to street shooting. As we pray that these crimes will stop, we need to do something in order that they will never happen again in our beautiful neighborhood. This Tuesday, September 26 th at 6:30 PM, we will have a Neighborhood Watch meeting at the Flanagan Center. A representative from sfsafe.org will be coming to speak to us on how to create a safer and more vibrant neighborhood. I also like the idea of neighbors watching neighbors and our neighborhood. If you are interested to learn from this Neighborhood Watch, you are welcome to attend this very important meeting. It is good to know that even though our parish is located in the outskirt of the city and in the outer Sunset district, we have become a center for Archdiocesan and City wide meetings. Trials, difficulties, and problems are common to our everyday life but solutions to it are always provided by our Good Lord. We only need patience, perseverance and faith in Him. Trust in God and ask Him for strength to endure all our troubles. Smile and feel calm... God never leaves those who cling to Him in perilous times. FAITH FORMATION * CATECHESIS * PASTORAL OUTREACH * Director: Sr. Cristina Ovejera, FdCC Crisfdcc2016@yahoo.com (415) Thank You to the Lay Canossians for a nice celebration on the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows on Sept. 15 th. To Fr. Arnold for the reflection on the Seven Sorrows and a meaningful Eucharistic Celebration. To Susan Logan and Colleen Durkin, for making the dining room looking grand and inviting. To Cres Payumo, our new coordinator for Church Liturgical Environment, for the beautiful decorations in the chapel. To all who brought food for the potluck brunch, enjoyed by all who came. As we continue to honor our Blessed Mother this whole month of September, we unite ourselves to the whole Canossian family throughout the world. Congratulations to all Lay Canossians who renewed their Promise to live the Canossian Charism and spirituality ever more faithfully. May St. Magdalene of Canossa continue to intercede for us. RCIA Inquiry Period is every Wednesday at 7:00-8:30 PM in the meeting room of the Pastoral Center. Please register with Sr. Cristina in the parish office, or you may just walk in to our weekly meeting. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults the RCIA for people who want either to learn about Catholics or to become Catholic. If you are in an interfaith marriage and are already actively involved in a church of a different denomination, you may want to understand your family s Catholic Faith better. If you are not connected to any faith community, you are most welcome to inquire with us. If after preparation you decide to become Catholic, you will be formally accepted at Easter. Welcome to our church! New Adult Faith Formation Program Also starting in October is our Fall study on Bishop Robert Barron s Catholicism. New series The Pivotal Players. We will begin with St. Francis of Assisi The Reformer. Rebuild my Church! Christ s mission to St. Francis is the perennial task of the Church in every age of its life. But how is that reform and renewal accomplished? The radical simplicity of St. Francis life demonstrates how the foundations of true love and lasting reform are to be built on the solid rock that is the witness of the saints. The Church celebrates the feast of St. Francis on Oct. 4 th. We are blessed to have him as patron saint of our Archdiocese of San Francisco, and have our city named for this great saint. This six-week series will begin on Thursday, October 5, at 7:00-8:30 PM in the meeting room of the Pastoral Center. The whole study will be held from Oct. 5 to Nov. 9 th. Sr. Cristina will facilitate. The topics are as follows: St. Francis of Assisi Oct. 5 Bl. John Henry Newman Oct. 26 St. Thomas Aquinas Oct. 12 G.K. Chesterton Nov. 2 St. Catherine of Siena Oct. 19 Michelangelo Nov. 9 Religious Education Classes are held every Sunday, at 10:30AM to 12:00 Noon. Registration is still going on. Sacramental preparations are for First Holy Communion, Confirmation, Baptism (for children ages 9 to 17 join the RCICY or Rite of Christian Initiation of Children and Youth). Please ask Sr. Cristina or Hilda De la Cruz for more information. Thank you.

5 September 24, 2017 Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time The film Forrest Gump was once described as the "battler's triumph." On one level it was about how the last will be first. This story picks up where the film left off. Forrest Gump dies and goes to heaven. On arrival St Peter informs him that there are three questions he has to answer before he can enter. 1) What days of the week begin with the letter T? 2) How many seconds are there in a year? 3) What is God's first name? Forrest answers straight away, "Shucks, there are two days in the week beginning with the letter T Today and Tomorrow." St Peter replies, "That's not what I was thinking, but you have a point. How about the next one?" "I think the only answer can be twelve." "Twelve?" St Peter asked. "Shucks, there's gotta be twelve: January 2nd, February 2nd, March 2nd...." "Hold it," interrupts St Peter, "I see where you're going with this. Let's go to the final question." "Sure," says Forrest. "Its Andy!" "Andy?" exclaims an exasperated St Peter. "OK, I can understand how you came up with your answers to my first two questions, but just how in the world did you come up with Andy as God's first name?" "Shucks, that was the easiest one of all," Forrest replies. "I learned it from the hymn... ANDY walks with me, ANDY talks with me, ANDY tells me I am his own." St Peter opened the pearly gates and yelled, "Run Forrest, run!" In today's Gospel, in which the first laborers are paid the same wage as the afternoon workers, what the early birds didn't reckon on was that they could have come much later and got the same deal. We would cynically call the afternoon workers, Johnnycome-latelies" and chances are if we were confronted with the same situation we would be with the complainers. This story was important to the early Church because generations of Jews waited and longed for the Messiah and, like the first workers, they were the first to respond to the call of Jesus and to work in the field of his Kingdom. For some of the early Jewish-Christians, including St Peter, it came as a surprise that the Lord was calling Gentiles to the life and work of Jesus' Kingdom as well. We can imagine that it rankled some of the early birds to see these Johnny-come-latelies taking charge of the Christian mission. This wasn't how it was supposed to be! This story, then, is a wonderful commentary on how fickle we are and, luckily for us, how extraordinarily generous God is. What we see in ourselves and others is only a glimpse of what God is like. God is so much more: more loving; more forgiving; more compassionate; and more just. And because God is so much greater than anything we could ask or imagine, we are constantly surprised at how he turns our expectations, our fears and predictions upside down. We constantly look for God in the big and spectacular and he comes to us poor, naked, sick, in prison, and hungry. God speaks through the most surprising people at the most surprising times. That's why those people who have decided that God can only work in certain ways, places, people, institutions and times so often end up at the end of the line when it comes to religious wisdom. Michael McGirr in his excellent book, Things You Get for Free argues that there is a crisis of belief today, but that it's not the way we often think. In a brilliant turning of the tables, McGirr says that the crisis of belief is that people inside the Church sometimes cannot believe that people outside its traditional structures can experience the love of Jesus. God loves and guides the Church, but is not bound by it. God is busy about making sure those who might be last have a chance to come in first. Rather than resent this, however, let's thank God for being bigger than we are and for being just to all of us, no matter when, or how, we get the Word. Richard Leonard SJ.
