Success, a comfortable life, and worldly securities are seen as what is needed to achieve happiness. Whether or not we like to admit it, these pursuits are operative in many of our lives. As much as we want to believe in the Gospel, we also find it hard not to cling to these other things. Unconditional trust in God must be first if we are going to perceive the kingdom of God. And while God does not want us to go out of our way to be miserable, Jesus clearly gives preference to those who are poor, hungry, weeping, vulnerable, and despised. When people encounter these things, they touch God. It teaches us not to get too comfortable with our riches and that there is much more to true life than the stuff we find so important. 3 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 17, 2019 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, At the Mass in this weekend, we are having Scout Sunday. Scouting is youth ministry in the Church and I am pleased to have the Scouts who meet at Divine Redeemer School to be with us. After Mass, everyone is invited to come to St. Mary Parish Hall where those who earned the religious emblems will be presented. The Light of Christ has been earned by our parishioners, Skyler Geisel, Allison Kamis and Owen Kamis. Welcome to the Scouts, leaders and families. Saturday, March 9 in is when the Youth Ministry retreat, "Gone Fishing" will take place, beginning with Mass with Bishop Malesic at 4 p.m. All parish youth in grades 8-12 are invited to attend. It will be held at St. Mary Parish Hall and will be a lock in, which will go until 8 a.m. on March 10. If you would like more information, contact Sandy Ashley at sashley@dioceseofgreensburg.org. Also, February 17 is Youth Ministry Movie Night in. It will take place from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the Sacred Heart Room. The movie, "Paul, Apostle of Christ" will be shown with refreshments. All in grades 6-12 are welcome. It is good that many of our young parishioners and families are involved in Scouting and in youth ministry. We hope that God will continue to bless our efforts of engaging our young Church and having them be better devoted and faithful disciples of Jesus. I appreciate the help in from Brian and Brianna Boylan and in from Bonnie Frailey and Megan McCue. Their commitment to our young people is encouraging. Father Doug EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP Recognize God in Your Ordinary Moments -Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS When I was a child, I often thought of the Church as something mystical and supernatural. I wasn't wrong in my understanding of the Body of Christ, for surely the Church has these characteristics. However, even though we speak about the foundation of all we are as Church being the "mystery of Christ," Jesus became a man so that supernatural element could break into the natural world in a profound way. What we once could not see, we now see. What we saw as a God in a distant place now dwelt among us. It is one of the aspects of Catholicism that I have grown to appreciate the most as I have matured: for a Catholic, the supernatural is natural. The communion of saints is heavenly and earthly at the same time. The Beatitudes instruct us about this reality. Pope Francis reminds us that holiness is "not about swooning in mystic rapture." Holiness is about living in the real world and doing extraordinary things with our ordinary lives. Our stewardship way of life consists of actions in the natural world that have extraordinary repercussions. Do not ever take your simple actions of generosity and love for granted. As disciples called to a life of stewardship, we participate in something more profound than what we can see. We are blessed to be called to follow Jesus, and we bring blessing to all those with whom we choose to share ourselves.

Much help is needed to ensure the success of this fundraising event for St. Mary, Mother of God Parish. In addition to Friday evenings, help is needed with food prep on Thursday mornings after the daily Mass. Sign-up sheets listing areas of help on Fridays are located on the table in the narthex of the church. We welcome adults, and invite the teen members of our parish. Please consider giving just a few hours a week to help support this effort. Picture This! GIFT CARD RAFFLE St. Mary, Mother of God Youth Ministry will sponsor a raffle during our enten Fish Fry Dinners - which begin on March 8. We will be selling tickets for a large picture frame filled with gift cards. The winning ticket will be drawn at the final Fish Fry on April 12. Last year, the prize was valued at $576. Proceeds from the raffle will be used to aid our youth in participating in upcoming events. If you would like to help fill the picture frame, please place your monetary donations in an envelope marked Youth Ministry Raffle and put it in one of the collection baskets before March 3.
