Is your image of God bigger than the labels and categories into which we often place Him? God has been acting in our world from the beginning of time and has been intimately wedded to creation for thousands of years before the creation of humanity. God's presence surprises us, but He can be clearly seen when people, regardless of their faith or creed, rise to the occasion and do the right thing. We have seen this countless times throughout history when people have put their differences aside, sacrificing their own security and needs to help others. God is much larger than we make Him out to be. Try to be present and mindful and not miss God working in all moments of life. If we are not attentive, God's presence can go unnoticed. 3 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, What a great start to our 10th Anniversary Year with Eucharist and our partner parish retreat with Matthew Leonard. This day was very spiritually enriching and I hope those who were there found it to be very good for their spiritual life. This was the unofficial start to our celebrating our parishes coming together on October 30, Our focus in this year will be the Sunday Eucharist. In my bulletin column next week, I will let you know who will come to preside and preach at the weekend Masses on October 27 and 28. Stay tuned for more exciting anniversary information to come! In light of this, we will no longer use the word volunteer in regards to being involved in parish life. People are called to volunteer at school or at a non profit organization, but we as Catholic Christians are called to minister. Now, as part of this, I have designated staff members at both parishes to be in charge of helping to obtain clearances to all who minister in our parishes. The title that will be used, Safe Environment Coordinator, signifies that they are the point people to contact in reference to all clearances and trainings that are required to protect God's children. In, the staff member is Sandy Ashley and in, the staff member is Bonnie Frailey. I thank them for their willingness to help me, the parishioners and the diocese in this very important process that is now in place. This weekend, we have the Seminarian and Clergy Formation Collection and the Called to Pray Appeal. I ask you to be generous in helping our 5 men studying for the priesthood and those of us who are ministering throughout the diocese. Your prayers and support is appreciated. In, it seems that the Holly Berry Fair is a long way off, December 1, but it is not. We have already been very busy preparing for this important parish fundraiser. We had a wonderful turnout of ministers at our Holly Berry Fair Kick Off and I want to thank all who came and expressed their new ideas and a great interest in helping to make it a success once again this year. This event is a very large endeavor and I thank those parishioners who are already working hard in preparation for the event. Finally, Thursday, October 4, is the popular feast of St. Francis of Assisi. Besides being the feast of Pope Francis, for pet owners, it is the day to bless our companions in life. I invite everyone who has a pet to come to one of the blessings. I ask that if you bring your dog or dogs, please have them on a leash. I ask that if you bring your cat or cats, please have them in their cage. Even on this feast day, dogs and cats do not mingle well together. During the entire month, the ushers will be counting everyone who is at Mass. It is very important that you attend Mass at the parish in which you belong. October count numbers are used by the diocese in planning for the future. If you attend Mass somewhere else, you are helping that parish. In addition, Father Doug, Father Alan and many liturgical ministers prepare much to enhance and make Sunday Mass a prayerful and joyful celebration. Chosen - Your Journey Toward Confirmation program offers a powerful and dynamic approach to teen faith formation that will both catechize and challenge teens to fully embrace a life in Christ. K of C Penalty Kick Soccer Challenge Cemetery Care Collection for St. Joseph & St. Mary Cemeteries Next Weekend All donations to this special collection are much needed and will help to pay for grass cutting and fall clean up of leaves at both of our parish cemeteries. A special Cemetery Offering envelope is included in your envelope packet. Thank you for your faithful stewardship to our parish cemeteries. Next Sunday, October 7 All boys and girls ages 9 to 14 are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the 2018 K of C Penalty Kick Soccer Challenge. The challenge is to score the most points in a goal divided into 5 scoring zones. The competition will be held on Sunday, October 7, at 1:00 p.m. at the Richard G. Snyder YMCA Soccer Field. Saint Mary, Mother of God Faith Formation Classes are collecting clean, gently worn coats of all sizes through October 31st. Hats, scarves, gloves and mittens are also appreciated. The items will be distributed to the needy of our community during Mother Mary s Table on November 12. Any remaining coats will be donated to local charitable organizations. Collection boxes are located in St. Mary/ St. Gabriel Hall and in the Narthex of the church. For the month of October, the Shannock Valley Food Pantry is asking for donations of macaroni and cheese. Sacred Heart St. Mary Cemetery Fall Cleanup Fall cleanup of the Sacred Heart and St. Mary Cemetery will soon take place. Please remove old, weathered and seasonal items and flowers from gravesites before October 19. Any items remaining after this date will be removed and discarded at the discretion of Cemetery Committee members. Thank you for your cooperation. The St. Mary Cemetery Committee is once again offering memorial bricks to be integrated into the St. Mary, Mother of God Chapel walkways. Brick order forms are available on the Narthex table as you enter the Church. The cost is $ per brick. Installation is planned to be competed by fall St. Mary Cemetery, Notice of Violations Several years ago, our parish established Rules and Regulations for St. Mary Cemetery. These Rules and Regulations were developed to help us continue to provide an attractive and well maintained final resting place for our loved ones. The Regulations include provisions limiting plant material and above grade edging. These are necessary to allow for efficient mowing and trimming and to protect equipment and maintenance personnel. Recently, cemetery personnel identified several violations of the Regulations. Please check your family plot or contact the parish office to see if it is in compliance. Please make arrangements to have any violations corrected prior to the annual fall cleanup on October 20. If you are unable to make arrangements for the removal of the violation, cemetery personnel will be able to do so at that time.
