This short season of Advent can be a mini-retreat for us who find ourselves living in a world that is often counterproductive to developing mature, focused, and meaningful relationships with God. Being a Christian and standing firm in our faith requires a strength that can only come from prayer. These four short preparatory weeks can help us look back to what God has done in history, to what God continues to do in our lives today, and to what God promises for the future. May we use this Advent time wisely, calling us to greater holiness. Please remember in your prayers the soul of parishioner Stephanie Walker as well as the soul of Josephine Recupero, who passed away last week. May God grant them eternal rest and peace. 3 Happy Advent! It is time for the season of anticipation and longing for the coming of Jesus. The quote from St. Francis Xavier says it well that in The Lord we are to put our hope. The first weekday of Advent, Monday, December 3, will be the feast day of St. Francis Xavier. He, St. Nicholas, St. Ambrose, Our Lady of Guadalupe, St. Lucy and St. John of the Cross all help us on our journey in Advent. Take some time to find out about these saints and how they can assist us in this beautiful season. Everyone is invited to a special 6 p.m. Mass in on Wednesday, December 5. Monsignor Roger A. Statnick, former vicar general of our diocese and retired pastor of St. Sebastian Parish in Belle Vernon will be the guest presider and homilist. At this Mass, I will also commission Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. Then, afterwards from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. a special presentation, "Tuning Up Our Service" will take place. Don't miss it! It is a joy to have Monsignor Statnick with us. He has a very impressive resume and a wealth of knowledge, including 45 years as a priest, a degree in Philosophy and Systematic Theology from St. Mary Seminary & University and a Masters and Doctorate degrees from The University of Notre Dame. Also, that day is the 29th priesthood anniversary of Father Victor. We wish him a Happy Anniversary and pray that his time with us serving our partner parishes will be one of great joy. 5 St. Mary, Mother of God Parish News Angel Giving Tree Gifts to Be Dropped Off by December 2! The Good Samaritan Ministry is sponsoring an Angel Giving Tree in cooperation with Armstrong County Children & Youth. A reminder that the gifts purchased to fulfill the wishes of needy families in our community must be delivered to the church by this Sunday, December 2. While gifts are not to be wrapped, wrapping paper, ribbon, tape, and gift bags may also be donated. The Giving Tree is one of our most successful campaigns of the year, and the heartfelt generosity of our parish family is always an amazing thing to witness. First Wednesday Adoration Moved to December 12 First Wednesday Eucharistic Adoration in is being moved to December 12, the second Wednesday in December, to allow everyone to attend a special Mass and Presentation on The Eucharist on December 5 in. Our Sincere Congratulations to Ryan & Anna (Lasslo) Riexinger who were married at Christ, Prince of Peace Parish, Ford City on Saturday, November 17. May God abundantly bless their life together. Angel Memorial Tree Angel ornaments, to be hung on the Angel Memorial Tree, are once again being sold during Advent. The handmade angels can be purchased for $5 each "in memory of" or "in honor of" a loved one. They will be sold in the church narthex before Masses on the weekends of December 1 & 2, and December 8 & 9. The Angels will decorate the narthex Christmas tree over the holidays and can be taken home when the season is over. The Angel Memorial Tree is sponsored by the Good Samaritan Ministry, and all proceeds will be used to help those in need within our parish. Mother Mary's Table Mother Mary's Table will be serving soup and fellowship on Monday, December 3, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. followed by Bible study from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. If you know someone who lives alone and would appreciate having soup delivered to their home, call Janet Hellgren at Please join us for an evening of food and fellowship.
