3 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time January 20, 2019 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Tuesday, January 22 is the Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children. We begin the new year with more prayers and more hope. This is a sad day for our country, but let us make it our firm purpose to work for a respect of all life. May Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the unborn, intercede for us. In both parishes, we will have meetings to begin preparations for the Lenten dinners. In, all are invited to gather on Monday, January 28, at 7:15 p.m. in the St. Mary Parish Hall. In, we will meet on Tuesday, January 29 at 6:30 p.m. in St. Mary/St. Gabriel Hall. Come and help plan so that these major Lenten ministries will do well again. Our first dinners will be served on Friday, March 8. In, Cathy Smith, our cemetery manager, is retiring on January 31. She has worked in the parish for 10 years. I want to thank Cathy for the fine ministry that she did with St. Mary and St. Joseph Cemeteries. Also, she has assisted in the office for these many years. We wish her well in her future. At this time, I have decided not to hire a cemetery manager, but to have existing staff take on additional responsibilities. If you need information on either cemetery after January 31, please call Erika and speak with her. Finally, the St. Mary, Mother of God faith formation classes are conducting a sock drive through the end of January. The classes are collecting new socks that will be distributed to the needy of the Shannock Valley at the Mother Mary's Table on February 11. There are collection boxes in the parish hall and in the church narthex. Please help with the sock drive and help our brothers and sisters keep warm this winter. Father Doug Everyday Stewardship Recognizing God in Your Ordinary Moments -Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS There are close to 7.6 billion people currently on earth. That is a lot of people! If you try to estimate how many people have collectively been born since the beginning of time, a good guess is 108 billion! It is hard to contemplate that many distinctly different human beings created by our God. In the midst of all those people, where do you and I fit? Can we really be created to make a difference in the world? One can feel very small and insignificant when reflecting on the numbers. We render ourselves insignificant when we make the mistake of seeing ourselves as being just like everybody else. However, when looking at the numbers, how can one honestly think we are all the same? Another way we become insignificant is believing the lie that one person in the midst of so many does not have the power to make an impact. However, we all spend time reading books, watching movies, or listening to news about singular people who made all the difference in some part of the world. Imagine your own world without a few key people who have touched you and made a difference. We are all created with unique gifts. We have those gifts that have been part of us from birth and those that have been imparted to us by the Holy Spirit. St. Paul tried to get the Corinthians to understand that reality when he explained to them the many gifts of the Spirit. Perhaps some of his audience back then thought they were insignificant. The message then remains the message today: God is counting on you to use what He has given you. If you don't, who will?

Important Reminder for Fish Fry Volunteers Our Lenten Fish Fry Dinners are just around the corner and we need your help to make this important parish fundraiser and community event a success. Volunteers over the age of 18 are required to obtain diocesan and state mandated clearances. We will work with you to make this process as easy as possible. Sock Drive St. Mary, Mother of God Faith Formation Classes are collecting NEW socks of all sizes through January 31st. The socks will be distributed to the needy of our community at the February Mother Mary s Table. Shannock Valley Food Pantry The Shannock Valley Food Pantry is requesting that we donate peanut butter for the month of January. Your donations can be placed in the narthex of the church and they will be collected from our church on the last Saturday of the month. Any remaining socks will be donated to local charitable organizations. Collection boxes are located in the Parish Hall and in the Church Narthex. Mitten Tree Project Thank You The Divine Redeemer Students and Staff would like to thank those families who supported our annual Mitten Tree Project. The Christmas Season Project this year collected 137 mittens, hats, scarves, and gloves to fill our Mitten Tree.
