We all have heard stories of people who have done incredible things in the presence of obstacles that appear insurmountable. These are real stories of real people who have lost limbs or faced other physical challenges. They have become amazing athletes and sometimes saints who overcame incredible difficulties in order to proclaim God's love and presence. Where there is a strong will, there is a way. What do we want Jesus to do for us? Let your faith inspire you to find the courage to love in the face of bitterness, the faith to persevere when tempted to give up, and the hope to move forward when falling into despair. Jesus saves us from ourselves and gives us the clear vision to see as God sees. 3 October 21, 2018 Res Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Next weekend, our partner parishes will celebrate our 10th Anniversary and we thank God for the many blessings that have come about since October 30, It is a joy to be with you at this exciting time in our history and to chart the future together serving God and His people in love. Pray for our neighbors in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. This weekend is the first weekend that their pastoral planning called "On Mission for The Church Alive" begins. Make sure that if you visit any of the parishes to check their new Mass schedules that are now in effect. Also, pray for the priests who were transferred and will deal with many pastoral issues that we have already gone through in our diocese. I want to welcome Father Sebastian Hanks, O.S.P.P.E., back to St. Paul Monastery. He returns after being pastor at St. Mark Parish, Summerville, Florida for over 6 years. He joins Father Raphael Glinkowski, O.S.P.P.E in helping to serve the needs of our area and those who attend Mass at the monastery. We are blessed to have the help of the Pauline Fathers in this part of the diocese. On October 14, Pope Francis canonized two great former pastors in the Church. Pope Paul VI and martyred Salvadoran Archbishop Oscar Romero. They can now be part of the Litany of Saints who can help us get closer to God. May they intercede for us. Finally, a reminder that Bishop Malesic will be coming to for one of the listening sessions. On Monday, November 5, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. he will visit and help us to follow Jesus more closely in this tough time of crisis in the Church. 4 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Now that we are ready to enter into our 10th Anniversary Year, I want to update the partner parishes on how I and members of the partner parish staffs have been preparing. I was approached by the diocese to consider entering into leadership training led by the Pittsburgh Leadership Foundation. The training began over a year ago, and now we are ready to begin introducing this transforming process to the parishes. I, as pastor and administrator, was part of the training. These members of the staff were involved: Erika Dragunova, Sandy Ashley, Joseph Kacprowski, James Gaggini and Cathy Smith. These members of the Yatesboro staff were involved: Betty Rose Walker, Bonnie Frailey, Peggy Skamai and Bob Skamai. I want to thank these partners in ministry for being challenged and growing in this first part of the leadership training. We all took the time and did this to help become better leaders in our parishes. Our partner parishes were part of the second group that was selected to be involved in the leadership training. We worked along with St. Mary Parish, Freeport and the Partner Parishes of St. Peter, Brownsville and St. Cecelia, Grindstone. The first group involved in the leadership training included St. Barbara Parish, Harrison City, Our Lady of Grace Parish, Greensburg, and The Catholic Community of Connellsville: Immaculate Conception/St. Rita/ St. John the Evangelist Parishes. They shared their experiences with us including what they did and what has worked in assisting their parish communities to grow and change. Bishop Malesic came to the leadership retreat that was held in February and shared his vision of what he would like to see happen in the diocese, beginning in these parishes. His presentation was a discussion of a healthy parish and involvement of lay faithful and lay leaders. It was based off of The Joy of the Gospel, the first encyclical from Pope Francis. Pope Francis wrote in focusing on the parish, It is the hope to make them environments of living communion and participation, and to make them completely mission-oriented." It is an exciting, yet challenging time in the Church, but I hope and pray our partner parishes are ready to move forward. Father Doug

5 Our new mission statement for our partner parishes is, "As baptized Catholics, we are called to continue the mission of Jesus Christ by sharing the Love of God." Our focus in this anniversary year is to start working on this mission statement, in particular, through the Sunday Eucharist. We need everyone's participation, and the way to start out is to ask you to pray and think of how to answer the following questions. 1. What would you like to see or how can we enhance your faith experience at Mass? 2. How can we make our parish more welcoming? 3. What can you do as a parishioner to improve or enhance the Mass? Before the end of the month, I ask you to submit your answers to these questions by writing them on a piece of paper and submitting in the Sunday collection, dropping it off in the particular parish office, or ing to me at ddorula@dioceseofgreensburg.org. I encourage you to help me and the parish staff to address these three questions in a prayerful, joyful and mission oriented way. I look forward to your help in this part of leadership development in our partner parishes. If you have questions or comments, please let me know. If you were unable to pick up a basket last weekend, they are still available for pick up this weekend, October 20 & 21. Please return the filled basket to the Parish Office or church by November 12. No need to wrap the basket.we will do it for you!! Catholic Daughters to Deliver Lunches to Homebound Parishioners on October 27 The Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Patricia #998 will be preparing and delivering lunches to the homebound on Saturday, October 27. If any homebound parishioner would like to receive a lunch and has not already been contacted, please call Vivian Cribbs at to request a lunch. The JOY Choir is a great opportunity for the young singers of our parish in grades 3 through 12 to participate in our music ministry. The choir will serve as Leaders of Song at one of the weekend liturgies approximately every 4 weeks. Rehearsals will be held every Wednesday beginning October 24 from 5:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. in the choir area. Please call Sandy Ashley at or her at sashley@dioceseofgreensburg.org if interested. Book of Remembrance Our Parish Book of Remembrance has been placed in the main entrance of the church. You may write the names of your deceased loved ones and friends in this book. They will be remembered in our prayers during the month of November. SACRAMENT OF FIRST RECONCILIATION There will be a PARENT WORKSHOP for all parents of children who are preparing for First Reconciliation on Sunday, October 21, from 10:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. in the Parish Hall multi-purpose room. Children will attend their usual Faith Formation Class. Terri Lynn Chocolate & Nut Sale Need a Christmas gift for the one who has everything? The Sisters of St. Joseph Auxiliary will be distributing order forms for Terri Lynn Nuts and Chocolate after Masses this weekend, October 13 & 14. 9 m s y October 21, 2018 St. Mary, Mother of God Parish News Journey to Confirmation During the week, our young parishioners in the 8th Grade who are preparing to celebrate Confirmation will be reflecting on the meaning of being anointed and set aside for God s service in today s world. Join them by reflecting on your own anointing in Baptism and Confirmation and examining your response to being set apart by that anointing. The Associates of Mary will meet on Thursday, October 25, after the 8:30 a.m. Mass in the Sacred Heart Room. The St. Mary Cemetery Committee is once again offering memorial bricks to be integrated into the St. Mary, Mother of God Chapel walkways. Brick order forms are available on the Narthex table as you enter the Church. The cost is $ per brick. Installation is planned to be competed by fall Catholic Daughters, Court St.Francis #1726, will meet in St. Mary / St. Gabriel Hall on Wednesday, October 24 at 7:00 p.m. Saint Mary, Mother of God Faith Formation Classes are collecting clean, gently worn coats of all sizes through October 31st. Hats, scarves, gloves and mittens are also appreciated. The items will be distributed to the needy of our community during Mother Mary s Table on November 12. Any remaining coats will be donated to local charitable organizations. Collection boxes are located in St. Mary/St. Gabriel Hall and in the Narthex of the church. For the month of October, the Shannock Valley Food Pantry is asking for donations of macaroni and cheese. SACRAMENT OF FIRST RECONCILIATION There will be a PARENT WORKSHOP for all parents of children who are preparing for First Reconciliation on Sunday, October 21, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in St. Anne Hall. Children will attend their usual Faith Formation Class in the Parish Hall Youth in Grades 6-12 St. Mary, Mother of God Youth Ministry will meet in St. Anne Hall on Sunday, October 21, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Friends are always welcome! (Morning Faith Formation classes for grades 6-12 will not meet). Second Collection to Benefit Sacred Heart and St. Mary Cemeteries Next weekend, October 27 & 28, a second collection will be taken at both Masses for the benefit of our two parish cemeteries. This collection, which is taken twice a year, is used for the maintenance and upkeep of the Sacred Heart and St. Mary Cemeteries. You will find a separate envelope for each cemetery in your mailed offertory envelope packet. Checks should be made payable to Sacred Heart Cemetery or St. Mary Cemetery respectively.
