We walk through this life knowing that our eternal destiny is to be like God and live eternally in His presence. How does this truth about who we can become change the way we live today? Does it even matter to us that we are called to a higher purpose that is often quite different than the one we fabricate for ourselves here on earth? A transformed, eternal life is God's desire for all of His daughters and sons. Knowing this helps us put suffering in perspective and walk peacefully with hope in our hearts. The Tabernacle Candle in is burning this week for the 17 victims of the recent school shooting in Parkland, Florida DIOCESAN LENTEN APPEAL This weekend is Education Weekend, and we heard at our Masses about the importance of participating in this year s Appeal. Please remember that next weekend is Commitment Weekend. If you haven t spent time reviewing the request that you received in the mail from Bishop Malesic, please take a few minutes this week to do so. You may mail your pledge or bring it to Mass next weekend. We are extremely grateful for your past generosity and ask that you consider participating in this year's Diocesan Lenten Appeal which will benefit not only our diocese but both of our parishes.

3 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, This year's Diocesan Lenten Appeal theme is, "Love One Another With Great Love." Bishop Malesic says that, "Our Annual Appeal is used to spread love throughout the diocese. So many acts of love are supported by your generous participation in the Diocesan Lenten Appeal." I hope and pray that each parish family will take time to look over the information that you get in the mail or can find on line. In, the diocesan goal is $46, and our parish goal is $60, The funds raised over the diocesan goal will be directed toward replacing the aging and inefficient boilers in the office, St. Mary Parish Center and in my house, the rectory. In, the diocesan goal is $21, and our parish goal is $28, The funds raised over the diocesan goal will be directed toward purchasing new front doors for the church that will help to improve energy efficiency. Lent is a time of prayer, fasting and almsgiving and I hope that you will share your blessings with God and His Church in this year's DLA. Your support does change lives and we must continue to implement the theme, "Love One Another With Great Love." All of us are in shock, once again, over the carnage that hit the school in Parkland, Florida. We pray for the 17 children and teachers who were killed and for their classmates, parents, family, friends and the community. Bishop Malesic issued a statement and said, "We have to start taking action to stop this carnage." At our partner parishes, we are taking action. This tragedy took place on Ash Wednesday and this will be a major part of our Lenten journey. We have sent a promise of prayers, a spiritual bouquet to the local parish - Mary Help of Christian Parish, Parkland, Florida and I ask you to contact President Trump at The White House and our U.S. Senators, Bob Casey and Pat Toomey to work on legislation to prevent these tragedies again. Dear Father Doug & Parishioners of St. Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish: Land of Peace and the Bethlehem Christian Families mission would like to express humble appreciation to you for allowing us to revisit your church on the weekend of February 10 & 11. With your kindness and through the generosity of your parishioners, the sales of the olive wood carvings received a total amount of $2,543. It was really a great excitement to observe so many kind people at your parish who were interested in our religious articles and some expressed their intention to visit the Holy Land when the peace prevails. Ministerial Association 2018 Lenten Series The Ministerial Association is presenting a series of Lenten services for the community. The second of the evening services will be held Tuesday, February 27, at 7:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 301 North Jefferson Street,. The speaker will be Reverend Michael Bobbitt of the Corner Stone Assembly of God. The second of the Lenten luncheons will be at noon on February 28, at Grace Presbyterian Church, corner of North Jefferson and Arch Streets,, the host church of all the luncheons. The message will be presented by Reverend Ali Berkey of the Allegheny River Charge. The next meeting of the Knights of Columbus, Council #1011 will be held on Thursday, March 1, at at St. Mary Parish Center. Hope to see you there. Dessert Donations Appreciated! With your help we were able to collect over 300 pairs of socks during the month of January. On Monday, February 12, families in our community received the socks at Mother Mary s Table. The remaining socks were donated to HAVIN, Inc. Lenten Fish Fry Dinners Served Fridays during Lent 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. St. Mary/St. Gabriel Hall, The menu choices are: Baked or Fried Fish, Seafood Platter, Fried Clams or Fried Shrimp. Dinners include: Baked Potato or French Fries; Cole Slaw; Bread; Coffee, Tea or Beverage. The cost is $10 for Adults and $5 for children under 12. Desserts extra. Join us for some great food & fellowship. Assistance is always needed on Thursdays after the daily Mass and at the Lenten Fish Fry Dinners. Please consider giving a little of your time to help with this parish fundraising event. Once again this year, Mother Mary's Table is giving $10 vouchers for Lenten fish fry dinners to needy members of our parish family as well as needy families from the community who come to the Shannock Valley Food Pantry and Mother Mary's Table. If you can find it in your heart to help by donating a meal or two, you can place an envelope designated to Mother Mary's Table in the collection basket. Thank you for helping those most in need in our community join in the fellowship we share at our Lenten Fish Fry Dinners.
