They can be the most transforming or the most hurtful of experiences. Our families of origin have a huge claim on who we are and who we will become. While families need to help us fulfill some of our human needs, this cannot be their sole purpose or focus. Healthy and happy families consist of folks who always have their eyes on the needs and best interests of the other individuals who make up their family unit. We live in the greater family of the world, which is also God's family. It can't only be about us. We must focus our gaze on the needs and well-being of our brothers and sisters. This whole seeing allows us to see others as God sees them. The Holy Family is the perfect example of how all families can work: our families of origin, the families in which we now find ourselves, and the family of our world. May we look to their example in helping us fine-tune our systems of family life so that God's presence can truly be revealed in and through them! Please remember in your prayers the soul of parishioner Michael Atwood who passed away last week. May God grant him eternal rest and peace. 3 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, This weekend it is time to remember The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. They are our guide in promoting family life and sharing the love of God, especially with our parents and family members. This family also was poor and they show us the importance of sharing what we have with others. The new year of 2019 is fast approaching and we have Masses on Monday and Tuesday for the Solemnity of Mary, The Holy Mother of God. This is the patronal feast day of our parish in. We pray that God continues to bless us and the ministry we do in the Shannock Valley. At the 11 a.m. Mass on January 1, I will bless the new doors that were installed recently during the liturgy. Finally, Friday and Saturday are the patronal feast days for the Diocese of Greensburg. Friday is the feast of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and Saturday is the feast of St. John Neumann. May these two saints help us in bringing the Gospel of Joy to all in Father Doug Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God ~ A Holy Day of Obligation We are still in the midst of the Christmas season, and on January 1 the Church will celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God and St. Mary, Mother of God Parish its Feast Day. One of the most outstanding characteristics of Mary is her willingness to know and do God s will. What is significant on this solemnity is the Gospel s comment about how Mary reflected in her heart on events that happened and were happening. She meditated. She is truly one who listens to God in all of life. In our busy lives today, do we take time to listen to our God? WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED Question: I was always fascinated by Mary and have had a devotion to her for many years. Why does Mary have so many titles? Isn't Mother of God enough? Answer: We all have many different roles to play, and each title we have is based on a relationship. For instance, a person might be a daughter, mother, wife, cousin, niece, employer, boss, friend, sponsor, and customer all in the same day! Our titles identify who we are at a given moment. Mary is the same way. Certainly Mother of God is her greatest title. Because of her trust in God and in the message of the angel, Jesus was born, becoming one of us. But all of Mary's titles are important. Each title highlights an aspect of her unique relationship with Jesus, with the Church, and with each of us. She is wife, mother, intercessor, patroness, mediatrix, God-bearer, and a host of other roles. Sometimes her title is one given by a local community of faith. Other times, the universal church gives her a title that all recognize. Above all, it is her faith and her willingness to say yes to God's plan that places her in a special place of honor among believers. In her humanity, she shows us how we, too, will be filled with grace, as we say yes to the Lord's plan for us. We believe that what happens to Mary will happen to us. She is our model, our mother in faith.

4 St. Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish News Wish Tree Project Thank You The St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish would like to thank our parish family for their very generous support of our 2018 Wish Tree Project. This year, our parish helped 11 families with 32 children with a total of 289 fulfilled wishes. The Vincentian Spirit of charity is very much alive in our parish as we continue to do many wonderful things for our local community. May God bless all who so generously responded to those in need this Christmas season. Please note: There will be no morning Mass and no Eucharistic Adoration in on Monday, December 31. The next meeting of the Knights of Columbus, Council #1011 will be held on Thursday, January 3, at 7:00 p.m. in the St. Juan Diego Room. Hope to see you there! Children & Family Mass and Advent Program on December 16 More photos on our website Children & Youth Envelopes Now Available for Pick Up The 2019 Children & Youth annual envelope box sets featuring Patron Saints Series are available in the church. Please make sure you pick a box for your child or teen. Thank you to our youngest members of our parish for using their envelopes throughout the year and thank you to parents for teaching their children the importance of parish stewardship. Calling All Basketball Players All boys and girls ages 9 thru 14 are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the 2019 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship. 5 St. Mary, Mother of God Parish News The Angel Giving Tree Thank You The members of the Good Samaritan Ministry would like to thank all the Angels of our parish family who participated in this year s Angel Giving Tree. So many wonderful gifts were purchased for families who were most in need. Your acts of kindness and generosity will fill them with joy this Christmas. May God bless your generous spirit, which inspires and encourages the Good Samaritan Ministry to continue our worthwhile work. Come! Live in the Light! Shine with the joy and the love of the Lord! Children and Family Mass Epiphany Play and Fellowship The Epiphany of Our Lord Sunday, January 6 Mass The children and youth of St. Mary, Mother of God, invite you to gather as a family for a special morning of prayer and fellowship on this great day of celebration. The 11:00 Mass will be youth-led, with students serving as lectors, greeters, ushers and altar servers. Immediately following Mass the children of our parish will present a play in honor of the day Christ made Himself known to the world. Our parish family and visitors are invited to come together for refreshments and fellowship In St. Ann Hall at the conclusion of the program. Please plan to join us in this celebration of the Light of Christ present in our families and in our world. Communion Calls The homebound parishioners of St. Mary, Mother of God, will be visited on Tuesday, January 8. If you know of anyone who should be included in these monthly visits, please contact the parish office Children and Youth Offertory Envelopes Offertory envelopes were recently distributed to the students in Faith Formation Classes. Additional boxed envelopes for children and youth not enrolled in the Faith Formation Program are available on the narthex table. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Wednesday, January 2 5:00 p.m. to Come and spend some quiet time with our Lord. We wish those celebrating at least their 80th Birthday in January a very Happy & Blessed Birthday.
