Suffering is not God's fault. The reality of suffering and death is much more complicated than this and even somewhat mysterious. When Jesus preached the Gospel, it was made clear that suffering has meaning and always brings with it new life. It requires faith in order to understand this mystery. The Gospel brings us new life both here and in the life to come. This is truly Good News! When this Good News is understood by the believer it stirs within us a passion to urgently preach this healing and life giving message to others. Our Sincere Congratulations to Mila Maxine Meighan Daughter of Donald & Kristin (Hagofsky) Meighan who was baptized in Kittanning on Saturday, January 27. Please remember in your prayers the soul of Yatesboro parishioner William Willie Lorenzo, Jr. as well as Loretta Grote, aunt of Father Alan Grote, who passed away last week. 3 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 4, 2018 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In our partner parishes, we are always looking for parishioners to help in the various ministries at Mass. In Yatesboro, I want to thank Desiree Pennington and Jammie Skamai for hearing the call to serve as new Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. They will be commissioned at Mass soon. If you would like to be an EMC, lector, altar server in Kittanning, talk with Sandy Ashley and in Yatesboro, you can talk with Peggy Skamai. Next weekend in Kittanning, Land of Peace, the Bethlehem Christian Families will be here with their beautiful religious items that are all made by hand from olive wood found in Israel. They will have these items for sale before and after Mass. Please support our brothers and sisters in The Holy Land. Any of the items that they sell will make great gifts for birthdays, anniversaries, baptisms, First Holy Communions, Confirmations and graduations. They will only be here next weekend. The season of Lent is quickly approaching and we are in need of your help with our annual Lenten fundraisers. Finally, I want to wish my Mother, Gloria Jean Dorula, a Happy Birthday. She is celebrating her 72nd birthday on Tuesday, February 6. If you helped in the past or you have never helped before, consider giving our parish a few hours of your time to help make our Lenten Fish Dinners a success! It is a great way to help our parish and get to know some other parishioners. Please let us know you can help by filling out the form below and returning it to the parish office via the collection basket or mail no later than February 11. Religious Articles Sale Next Weekend at Parish Next weekend, February 10 & 11, Roni Salsa, a representative from a nonprofit organization called Land of Peace will be with us speaking about the Christian situation in the Holy Land and selling crucifixes, religious art work, and rosaries - all made of olive wood which is native to Israel and Bethlehem. Since tourism has greatly depleted, Christian families in the Holy Land, who depend on tourists, have been greatly affected. The goal of this mission is to build a Charitable Hospital in Bethlehem and help the poor and needy families in Bethlehem and Jerusalem. Sale of these goods will help them very much and also give you the opportunity to have something authentic from the Holy Land. Please browse and buy some articles. 5 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 4, 2018 St. Mary, Mother of God Parish News St. Mary, Mother of God LENTEN FISH FRY DINNERS Begin on Friday, February 16! This year s Lenten Fish Fry Dinners will begin on Friday, February 16. Much help is needed to ensure the success of this fundraising event for St. Mary, Mother of God Parish. In addition to Friday evenings, help is needed with food preparation on Thursday mornings after the daily Mass. Sign-up sheets listing areas of help on Fridays are located on the table in the narthex of the church. We welcome adults, and invite the teen members of our parish. Please consider giving just a few hours a week to help support this effort. For more information, please contact Betty Rose at the parish office at St. Mary, Mother of God Youth Ministry will sponsor a basket raffle during this year s Lenten Fish Fry Dinners - which begin on February 16. We will be selling tickets for 1 large basket with the RAFFLE winning ticket to be drawn at the final Fish Fry on March 23. Proceeds from the raffle will be used to aid our youth in participating in upcoming events sponsored by the Diocese of Greensburg. We are also looking forward to the opportunity of attending the next National Catholic Youth Conference in If you would like to help us prepare the raffle basket, please place your monetary donations in an envelope marked Youth Ministry Raffle and put it in one of the collection baskets before February 12. The members of the Good Samaritan Ministry would like to thank all the angels of our parish family who participated in this year's Angel Giving Tree. So many wonderful gifts were purchased to help 16 local children and 8 families who were most in need. Many of these families wanted no more than household and cleaning supplies and you were most generous in meeting all their needs. Your acts of kindness and charity throughout the year, but especially at Christmas, are an inspiration that makes the work of the Good Samaritan Ministry so worthwhile. Communion Calls The homebound parishioners of St. Mary, Mother of God, Yatesboro will be visited on Wednesday, February 7. If you know of anyone who should be included in these monthly visits, please contact the parish office. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Wednesday, February 7 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Come and spend some quiet time with our Lord. The Shannock Valley Food Pantry is requesting that we donate cereal for the month of February. Your donations can be placed in the narthex of the church. Thank you for your generosity. Once again this year, Mother Mary's Table will be giving $10 vouchers for Lenten fish fry dinners to needy members of our parish family as well as needy families from the community who come to the Shannock Valley Food Pantry and Mother Mary's Table. If you can find it in your heart to help by donating a meal or two, you can place an envelope designated to Mother Mary's Table in the collection basket.
