Slanicka & James J. Patsy by Carla Slanicka National C. D. of A. Sunday Are we content and satisfied with the bare minimum and essentials of our faith, or do we desire excellence and proficiency? The Ten Commandments represent the minimum and, if we are honest with ourselves, are pretty easy to keep. The fullness of the Gospel, however, is another story. Truly living as Jesus taught often comes with great self-sacrifice, self-emptying, and possibly leaving the things of this world behind. Are we ready to pursue this kind of life? God wants us to live and love abundantly not superficially. Love asks that we extend ourselves beyond the status quo and the bare minimum and venture into that which is risky, countercultural, and even radical. What we possess can no longer be important. When Jesus laid this out before the rich young man, he went away sad because he had much. When Jesus lays it out before us, how do we react? Please remember in your prayers the soul of parishioner John Bugay who passed away last week. May God grant him eternal rest and peace. 3 October 14, 2018 Resp Lifea Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Our former parochial vicar, Bishop Medil Aseo met Pope Francis as you can see in this photo to the right of this article. What a great blessing for our partner parishes that in our first 10 years, someone who ministered in and was called to be a bishop. Continue to pray for Bishop Medil as he shepherds the Diocese of Tagum, Philippines. I hope and pray that during our 10th anniversary year he might be able to come and join us. We will have to see if it is possible since he is very busy as a new bishop shepherding his people. Make sure to mark your calendars for our 10th Anniversary Celebration Masses the weekend of October 27/28. Father Efren Ambre will celebrate the 4 p.m. Mass in with a reception after in St. Mary Parish Hall. He will also celebrate the 11 a.m. Mass in with a reception after in St. Mary/St. Gabriel Hall. Monsignor Roger Statnick, the former vicar general of our diocese and retired pastor of St. Sebastian Parish, Belle Vernon, will be the guest presider and homilist for the 6 p.m. Mass in and 9 a.m. Mass in. Next weekend after all of the Masses in our partner parishes you will be able to purchase a ticket to the Cash Bash that Divine Redeemer School is having on Saturday, November 3 at St. Mary Parish Hall. Only 500 tickets will be sold and you will have a chance to win part of the $3500 total cash payout and have a great evening of food, drink and fun for only $ I hope to see you there and support Catholic education. Also, next weekend in at the 11 a.m. Mass, the Knights of Columbus Council #1011 will have a membership drive. I ask that all Catholic gentlemen consider joining this fraternal organization and help increase the number of Knights at St. Mary, Mother of God Parish. This week, from Monday afternoon until Thursday afternoon, Father Alan, I and all our brother priests from our diocese will be at our annual convocation in Blairsville with Bishop Malesic. I ask you to keep us in your prayers as we gather to regroup and pastorally prepare for the next year. There will be no Mass on Wednesday evening in and no Mass in on Thursday. Finally, in this weekend and next weekend, pick up a basket in the back of church for the Holly Berry Fair Theme Basket Raffle. Pick a theme, fill the basket and return it by November 12. I want to thank all who are helping to do this preliminary work for our Holly Berry Fair, which will be held on December 1 in our Parish Hall, so that we will have many baskets available to win and enjoy a great time together! Father Doug Next Weekend is World Mission Sunday! For 93 years the Church has been celebrating World Mission Sunday on the next to the last Sunday of October. This year s celebration, with the theme of Through Youth to the World: Voices for Mission, is on October 21. The Missions of the Church need the support, prayer, and generous sacrifice of all parishioners as missionaries strive to share Jesus Christ in the Missions. The Holy Father sees the celebration of World Mission Sunday as a good opportunity for enabling the missionary heart of the Christian communities to join in prayer, testimony of life and communion of goods, in responding to the vast and pressing needs of evangelization. The World Mission Sunday collection supports missionaries in more than 1,100 mission dependent dioceses, through whose work and witness to Christ, the poor receive practical help and experience God s love and mercy, His hope and peace. Please keep the Missions in your prayers and be generous in next week s collection for this worthy cause.

Your generous donation of the basket will be acknowledged on the basket at the event and in our parish bulletin. The process is easy: Pick up a basket in the back of the church after Masses this weekend, October 13 & 14, or next weekend, October 20 & 21. Pick a theme from the list provided or create your own and register your theme & name. List of theme basket ideas is available on our parish website and in the church. Fill the basket with theme items. No need to wrap the basket - we will do it for you! Return the filled basket to the Parish Office or church by November 12. The Sisters of St. Joseph Auxiliary will be distributing order forms for Terri Lynn Nuts and Chocolate after Masses this weekend, October 13 & 14. Cemetery Collection A sincere thank you to all who contributed to the Cemetery Collection for the benefit of St. Joseph and St. Mary Cemeteries last weekend. Your donations to this special collection are much needed and will help us greatly to pay for this season s grass cutting and fall clean up of leaves. You can still make a donation to this collection in coming weeks by using the Cemetery Offering envelope from your offertory envelope packet and placing it in the collection basket or mailing it to the parish office. SACRAMENT OF FIRST RECONCILIATION There will be a PARENT WORKSHOP for all parents of children who are preparing for First Reconciliation on Sunday, October 21, from 10:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. in the Parish Hall multi-purpose room. Children will attend their usual Faith Formation Class. 5 m s y October 14, 2018 St. Mary, Mother of God Parish News Journey to Confirmation During the week, our young parishioners in the 8th Grade who are preparing to celebrate Confirmation will be reflecting on the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Join them by reflecting on how you are using the Gifts of the Holy Spirit in your daily life. The Knights of Columbus, Council #1011, will hold a membership drive at the 11:00 a.m. Mass next weekend. All Catholic gentlemen are invited to consider joining this fraternal organization. Stop and talk with the Knights who will be there if you have any questions. The Friendship Circle will meet on Thursday, October 18, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Plumville Fire Hall. Saint Mary, Mother of God Faith Formation Classes are collecting clean, gently worn coats of all sizes through October 31st. Hats, scarves, gloves and mittens are also appreciated. The items will be distributed to the needy of our community during Mother Mary s Table on November 12. Any remaining coats will be donated to local charitable organizations. Collection boxes are located in St. Mary/St. Gabriel Hall and in the Narthex of the church. SACRAMENT OF FIRST RECONCILIATION There will be a PARENT WORKSHOP for all parents of children who are preparing for First Reconciliation on Sunday, October 21, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in St. Anne Hall. Children will attend their usual Faith Formation Class in the Parish Hall Youth in Grades 6-12 St. Mary, Mother of God Youth Ministry will meet in St. Anne Hall on Sunday, October 21 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Friends are always welcome! (Morning Faith Formation classes for grades 6-12 will not meet). Sacred Heart St. Mary Cemetery Fall cleanup of the Sacred Heart and St. Mary Cemetery will soon take place. Please remove old, weathered and seasonal items and flowers from gravesites before October 19. Any items remaining after this date will be removed and discarded at the discretion of Cemetery Committee members. Thank you for your cooperation. For the month of October, the Shannock Valley Food Pantry is asking for donations of macaroni and cheese. St. Mary Cemetery, Notice of Violations Several years ago, our parish established Rules and Regulations for St. Mary Cemetery. These Rules and Regulations were developed to help us continue to provide an attractive and well maintained final resting place for our loved ones. The Regulations include provisions limiting plant material and above grade edging. These are necessary to allow for efficient mowing and trimming and to protect equipment and maintenance personnel. Recently, cemetery personnel identified several violations of the Regulations. Please check your family plot or contact the parish office to see if it is in compliance. Please make arrangements to have any violations corrected prior to the annual fall cleanup on October 20. If you are unable to make arrangements for the removal of the violation, cemetery personnel will be able to do so at that time.
