All of the demands of work, school, and society can easily put a strain on even the best intentioned of families. Hurt, anger, and bitterness can grow in our families especially when conflicts are not properly resolved or relationships nurtured. Human beings require time, patience, love, and nurturing. We need to take time to celebrate the gift of family and not allow other demands to rob us of the time we need to spend together. Life is short. The Holy Family stands before us today showing us that love, commitment, and perseverance can see us through any difficulty or challenge life can bring. May we learn from their example! 3 December 31, 2017 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, We continue our celebration of Christmas with the feast of The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. This is the family by which all of us are called to model our own family. We can look to Mary and Joseph as parents who took the time to observe the practices that are part of their faith. Passing on the faith was important to them and it is still very important today. Father Medil and I work with a wonderful team of faith formation coordinators, catechists and aides involved in faith formation. I want you to know who they are so that you can thank and pray for them as they share their time, talent and treasure to pass on the Catholic faith to our children and parents. In, Jim Gaggini and in, Bonnie Frailey are our faith formation coordinators and also teach throughout the year. They are doing well and I want to recognize them first for the blessing that they are to us. In, these catechists are helping to pass down the faith: Sabrina Dague, Mary Anne Galonski, Bobby Galonski, Kim Kovatch, Cindy Milz, Regan Smith and Susanna Streightif. The aides are: Dylan Gaggini, Gabe Jageman, Sadie Jageman, Megan McLafferty, Becca Webb and Zach Wills. In, these are the catechists: Lisa Blystone, Amy Foster, Penny Hampshire, Karen Kintz and Megan McCue. The aides are: Mandy Buffone, Angela Notto, Stella Samosky and Brandy Schaeffer. The substitute catechists are Lori Harkleroad and Lisa Sims. As you can see, there are many people involved in our faith formation ministries. I also want to thank our parents and guardians of our children for making sure that they come to faith formation. May The Holy Family guide them now and always. I want to wish everyone Happy New Year! I hope and pray that 2018 is filled with many blessings and graces for all of us, especially with good health and happiness. We begin the new year with our patronal feast day in, the Solemnity of Mary, The Holy Mother of God on Monday, January 1. Masses will be held in at 9 a.m. and in at 9 a.m. This day is not a holy day of obligation, but a great way to start the new year with attending Mass and thanking God for the gift of Mary, Our Mother. January 1 is also the World Day of Prayer for Peace. Let each of us pray for a true and lasting peace in our world and for everyone. In this new year, let there be peace on earth starting with this special day. Finally, this week we celebrate the co-patrons of the Diocese of Greensburg, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and St. John Neumann. Please keep Bishop Malesic and all priests, religious and laity who minister in our diocese in your prayers. It is a great joy to have their respective feast days in the Christmas season. These holy saints of God are remembered for what they have done while on earth, and what they do for us in heaven as intercessors. Father Doug

4 December 31, 2017 St. Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish News 2018 Children & Youth Envelopes Featuring Prayer Series Design The 2018 Children & Youth annual envelope box sets with beautiful colorful Prayer Series featuring various Catholic Prayers are available in the church. Please make sure you pick a box for your child or teen. Thank you to our youngest members of our parish for using their envelopes throughout the year and thank you to parents for teaching their children the importance of parish stewardship. The Centering Prayer Group continues to meet on Wednesdays at in St. Mary Parish Center. We watch a brief video from the Contemplative Outreach series, have a brief discussion and then have 20 minutes of Centering Prayer and conclude prior to the 7:00 p.m. Mass. We welcome new participants who may not have attended the workshops. You are asked to contact the Parish Office to register and arrangements will be made to provide you with an orientation. 5 December 31, 2017 St. Mary, Mother of God Parish News Communion Calls Children s Epiphany Play Next Sunday January 7 Faith Formation students in grades K-5 invite all parishioners to remain in the church following the Mass on January 7 as we present our Epiphany Play. Please plan to join us as we honor the day that Jesus was revealed to the entire world. The homebound parishioners of St. Mary, Mother of God, will be visited on Wednesday, January 3. If you know of anyone who should be included in these monthly visits, please contact the parish office. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament Wednesday, January 3 5:00 p.m. to Come and spend some quiet time with our Lord. Members of the Knitting Group: Please note that the Knitting Group will not meet during the month of January Children and Youth Offertory Envelopes Offertory envelopes were recently distributed to the students in Faith Formation Classes. Additional boxed envelopes for children and youth are available on the Narthex table. Shannock Valley Food Pantry The Shannock Valley Food Pantry is requesting that we donate canned fruit for the January 8 distribution day. Your donations can be placed in the narthex of the church. We wish those celebrating at least their 80th Birthday in January a very Happy & Blessed Birthday. It s Good for the Sole St. Mary, Mother of God Faith Formation Classes are collecting NEW socks of all sizes through January 31st. The socks will be distributed to the needy of our community at the Mother Mary s Table on February 12. Any remaining socks will be donated to local charitable organizations.
