1 October 14, 2018 Sunday News Morning edition VIBRANT INCLUSIVE PROGRESSIVE In 1968, Rev. Troy Perry felt called to offer a place for gay people to worship God freely. Rev. Perry put an advertisement in The Advocate announcing a worship service designed for gays in Los Angeles. Twelve people turned up on October 6, 1968 for the first service, after which Rev. Perry quipped that Nine were my friends who came to console me and to laugh, and three came as a result of the ad. After six weeks of services in his living room, the congregation shifted within several months to a women s club, an auditorium, a church, and a theater that could hold 600 people. Today, MCC has more than 200 congregations (affiliated, emerging and oasis churches) in 33 countries. It is directly because of the work of MCC that governments around the world have changed their laws to protect LGBTQ2S+ individuals in their homes, public spaces and the work-place. The global tide of equal marriage rights has roots on the shores of our church communities, and MCC Toronto held the world s first legal same-sex weddings in During the AIDS crisis, our churches were safe havens for those affected by the disease. Our volunteers went to people s homes to show compassion, attend to their needs and create an environment where the sick could die with dignity. When our world needs unconditional love and radical inclusivity, MCC is here to answer the call. 50 Years Of Love!

2 Offertory Performer Order of Service The MCC Toronto Chancel Choir, affectionately known as The Choir, boasts an eclectic combination of singers, a true community of diverse individuals, whose love of music brings them together every week and is an integral part of Sunday morning worship at MCC Toronto. Members dedicate over a thousand volunteer hours in an average month, singing within and outside of the church walls. The Choir s three CDs, House of Love, Connected: Songs for the Heart, and These Old Walls, are available at the Information Centre and online on itunes. Music Director: Diane Leah At the symbol, please rise as you are able. 4 Sacred Readings Psalm 36:5-7 (NLT) Your unfailing love, O God, is as vast as the heavens; your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds. Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your justice like the ocean depths. You care for people and animals alike, O God. How precious is your unfailing love, O God! All humanity finds shelter in the shadow of your wings. Psalm 104:10-24 (NLT) Yahweh You make springs pour water into the ravines, so streams gush down from the mountains. They provide water for all the animals, and the wild donkeys quench their thirst. The birds nest beside the streams and sing among the branches of the trees. You send rain on the mountains from your heavenly home, and you fill the earth with the fruit of your labor. You cause grass to grow for the livestock and plants for people to use. You allow them to produce food from the earth wine to make them glad, olive oil to soothe their skin, and bread to give them strength. The trees of God are well cared for the cedars of Lebanon that God planted. There the birds make their nests, and the storks make their homes in the cypresses. High in the mountains live the wild goats, and the rocks form a refuge for the badgers. You made the moon to mark the seasons, and the sun knows when to set. You send the darkness, and it becomes night, when all the forest animals prowl about. Then the young lions roar for their prey, stalking the food provided by God. At dawn they slink back into their dens to rest. Then people go off to their work, where they labor until evening. What a variety of things you have made! In wisdom you have made them all. The earth is full of your creatures. These are sacred readings. May they comfort us, inspire us, and challenge us. Thanks be to God!

5 Thanksgiving Crowds It was our biggest Thanksgiving crowd yet! Some say we served dinner to more than 180 guests and some delighted exaggerators claim it was 250. We certainly did have to set up extra dining places in Room 109 and even in the servery. Thank you to Dameon and his crew for delicious turkey, stuffing and gravy enough to feed everyone, to expert cooks who made mounds of mashed veggies (including the besttasting butternut squash and carrot dish ever!) and to all those who brought in salads and desserts and smiles galore. And thank you to Cyril and his crew for exceptionally gorgeous decorating, to all our donors and to all our guests who provided great ambiance, to tireless dishwashers and to all those who cleaned up and stayed to the very end. Also, a thank you to Jennifer Keesmaat and her husband, Tom, and their two teenage children who graciously joined our servers happily dishing up this wonderful dinner. Thank you, Everybody!

6 Find Pledge Cards in the pew pockets. Our doors are powerful symbols. Some see our doors as a portal to great potential, others see them as a barrier. Life-changing decisions are made the first time someone enters through our doors. For some, this transition comes with fear, for others, joy. For all, the change is made easier by us, those who ve passed through these doors before. We are called to welcome the searcher, assist the marginalized, celebrate with the joyful and encourage the fearful. We are called to steward over our sanctuary so others can experience God s love. Pledge campaign ends today!
