God Speaks to Us SCRIPTURE READINGS L: The Old Testament Lesson for First Sunday After Christmas is from the Sixty First and Sixty Second chapters of Isaiah. 10 I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. 11 For as the soil makes the sprout come up and a garden causes seeds to grow, so the Sovereign Lord will make righteousness and praise spring up before all nations. 1 For Zion's sake I will not keep silent, for Jerusalem's sake I will not remain quiet, till her vindication shines out like the dawn, her salvation like a blazing torch. 2 The nations will see your vindication, and all kings your glory; you will be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will bestow. 3 You will be a crown of splendor in the Lord 's hand, a royal diadem in the hand of your God. Isaiah 61:10 62:3 NIV L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. -2-

3 869 7 th Avenue SE Rochester, MN EPISTLE READING L: The Epistle Reading is from the fourth chapter of Galatians. 4 But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. 6 Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, "Abba, Father." 7 So you are no longer a slave, but God's child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir. Galatians 4:4 7 NIV L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. (Please stand to sing.) (*) RESPONSE How silently, how silently the wondrous gift is giv n! So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of His heav n. No ear may hear His coming; but in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive Him still the dear Christ enters in. (LSB 361, st. 3) (*) GOSPEL READING P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the second chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying: 29 "Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. 30 For my eyes have seen your salvation, 31 which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel." 33 The child's father and mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: "This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too." 36 There was also a prophet, Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, 37 and then was a widow until she was eighty four. She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying. 38 Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem. 39 When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth. 40 And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him. Luke 2:28 40 NIV -3-

8 SUNDAY ADULT BIBLE CLASS This Sunday, December 31, 9:20 am STRUCTURE OF THE LCMS Josh leads this discussion on the Structure of the LCMS. Please join him in the Fellowship Hall for this class! Upcoming Adult Education Classes - Beginning Sunday, January 7, 9:20 am HEROES OF THE FAITH In an age where we have more superhero movies than we do new original stories in the box office, it is easy to see the fascination people have with a superhero. They are easy to root for, they are so noble and their cause is to help save as many people from terrible enemies as possible. The green screen saviors though have nothing on our heroes of the faith! Come and participate with DCE Josh Heirigs as we delve into different biblical heroes class located in Choir Room. LIFE VERSE As we continue our theme of "Family of Believers: In the Word" this class will take us into God's Word to listen to what He has to say. A "Life Verse" is a passage from God's Word that can help a person follow God in the special way that God has called them. This passage may guide a person throughout their life or through a certain time, but it is always a blessing. Whether you already have a Life Verse or if you would like to find yours for the first time, this class will be a time of rich reflection and blessing meeting in the So. Fellowship Hall. ESTHER Times are tough: political power struggles, jealousy, sexual harassment, discrimination. Sound familiar? Join Virginia Miller in the North Fellowship Hall as we explore the book of Esther together to see how the Lord uses us in "just a time as this." ANNUAL MEETING Sunday, January 14, :30 pm IMPORTANT MEETING! The 2018 Budget and reports will be available January 1. Please mark your calendars! More information and details will be coming... JUST A FRIENDLY REMINDER: The Youth provide donuts for Fellowship time on Sunday mornings (which we all enjoy!) but donations have been down a bit so they have used their fundraising money to cover the expense. Let s all remember to put in the suggested amount of 0.75 cents each. This does not cover the coffee so I m sure the ladies (RLCW) would appreciate the coffee donation of 0.50 cents per cup, too! NOW AVAILABLE On the counter in the Narthex: Portals of Prayer for January through March. LWML WINTER Quarterlies are now available on the counter in the Narthex. Let s tell our new pastor and his family how much they mean to us and how we are praying for them! WHAT'S WITH THE BABY BOTTLES? Have you noticed the basket of baby bottles in the Narthex? The RLCW is sponsoring a fund drive for New Life Family Services, beginning in December and continuing until Sanctity of Life Sunday, February 4, The baby bottles are designed to be used either as a "mite box" for your pocket change or as a specific donation. Staying Well When Everyone Else Is Sick Does everyone around you seem to be sick with a cough or cold? With cold and flu season, hand washing is one of the most important things that you can do to prevent sickness. It is OK to omit shaking hands even in church. If you do happen to get sick, the following are reminders: Rest up!!! Stay home away from others. Rest can help you heal faster and keep you on the mend. The 3-foot rule! Keep 3 feet distance between you and others. Cough into your sleeve. If you have a sore throat, drinking warm water with lemon juice and honey or gargling with salt water can help. If you have body aches, a fever, or headache, try aspirin or acetaminophen, (the active ingredient in Tylenol). If you have nasal congestion, try saline nasal spray. The spray can help with stuffy nose symptoms and is safe! Stay hydrated by drinking water, tea, or clear soups to help with sore throats and congestion.
