And it is the way the pilgrim prays, with his or her feet. And the feet walk through dark clouds to illumination to the light that is holy action. Through dark, cloud-filled days to a hint of subtle lightening to the sun breaking through, the feet taking us where we least thought we d go. 4:00 pm 9:00 am 5:30 pm 12:05 pm 5:30 pm 12:05 pm 7:00 am 8:00 am Tuesday The Hiding Place for God s Spirit Our outer world and its inner significance must come together for there to be any wholeness and holiness. Daily Reflection Thursday The Gospel Calls Us to Live Simply When you agree to live simply, you can understand what Francis meant when he said, A brother has not given up all things if he holds onto the purse of his own opinions. Most of us find out that this purse is far more dangerous and disguised than a money purse, and we seldom let go of it. Friday The Wall within Our Own Hearts Always, it seems, there is the enemy beyond the walls, which may be of our own making, who wants to sneak in and take over our city, appropriating as his or her own the property and goods and people within. And those of us within know and fear this treat to our lives and, in turn, wall ourselves in for protection, even though the enemy may already be inside our walls, may in fact reside within our own walled -in hearts. Saturday Living the Truth in Love We who bear the name Christ and call ourselves Christian should do his works according to his Word, but so often we mistake our own social, cultural, and personal desires for the Word of God. This is how some self -identified Christians end up committing all sorts of hatred, discrimination, and violence. But this is also how more ordinary women and men like you and me, who also bear the name Chris. God s people. He opens our eyes to see that there are two kingdoms: the kingdom of this world, which we can touch, taste, see, hear, and smell (our physical world), and God s kingdom, which is unseen but just as real in fact, even more so.

3 Volume 63, Number 29, Page 3 ~ From the Pastor ~ Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Mark 10:14 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, As my second week as your new pastor comes to a close, I continue to be grateful for your hospitality and for getting to know this community. This past week was a great opportunity to do so as we had Summer Catechism for those in Elementary school. It was a blessing getting to see so many young people present to learn more about the faith, especially as this week focused on the greatest of devotions, the holy rosary. Now that this week has wrapped up, I think it can lead us to a deeper reflection on the importance of educating our young people in the faith. As they are the future of our society, our country, and especially our Church, it is essential that we raise our children in the values, the virtues, and the faith they need to be future saints of Jesus Christ. This is a task that all of us have a role to play. Certainly, the parish is instrumental in the spreading of the faith to all souls, especially the young. But the education of children first and foremost always begins at home in the family, what the Church calls the domestic church. As Vatican II reminds us: As it is the parents who have given their life to their children, on them lies the gravest obligation of educating their family (Gravissimum Educationis, no. 3). To highlight this, I ve been reading a collection of St. John Paul II s letters to priests that he would send out each year of his pontificate. In his 1985 letter, he addressed the importance of the youth and the responsibility of priests to teach the young in imitation of Jesus and the Young Man (cf. Mt 19:16-22; Mk 10:17-22; Lk 18:19). One of the important points he highlights one he considers necessary to raise children in the faith is to show them the same love of Christ. This applies to us all, for all of us have a responsibility to care for the vulnerable around us, especially children. To give an idea of what this love looks like, I ll close with a quote from this letter of our Holy Father: Love for young people this love which is an essential quality of every honest educator and good pastor is fully conscious both of the qualities and of the defects proper to youth and to young people. At the same time, this love just like Christ s love reaches the person directly precisely through these qualities and defects. It reaches the individual who is at an extremely important phase of life. Many things, in fact, are determined and decided at this phase (sometimes in an irreversible way). The future of a person depends to a great extent upon the nature of that person s youth: the future, that is, of a concrete and unique human being. The time of youth therefore in the life of every person is a particularly responsible phase. Love for young people is above all awareness of this responsibility and readiness to share it. Intention of Pope Francis for the month of July That our brothers and sisters who have strayed from the faith, through our prayer and witness to the Gospel, may rediscover the merciful closeness of the Lord and the beauty of the Christian life. For details, contact Sidney Bennett at PRAYER FOR PROTECTION DURING HURRICANE SEASON O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed Your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land, and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son on our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem, where a stormless eternity awaits us. Amen. [Composed by Most Rev. Maurice Schexnayder ( ),Second Bishop of Lafayette ( ) in 1957]
