But those who spend time meditating on the words of Francis reflect on the hiddenness and humility he so valued during his lifetime. It serves as a reminder not to desire fame and fortune but to seek only the grace of God. Tuesday Moving Forward Complaining can become a habit and it can soon burden our spirits and our friends. When we re going through tough times, some amount of struggle and grief is to be expected. But as people of faith, we know that at some point we need to let go of the grieving and move forward with grace. Wednesday Lend A Hand More and more people work at occupations that make few physical demands. While there will always be jobs that involve manual labor, not everyone can enjoy the satisfaction that comes with seeing a concrete result from physical work. Often our hobbies reveal that we need to do things with our hands, we need to be active, and we need to use our bodies as well as our minds. Daily Reflection Thursday Inner Attitude Does our outward appearance accurately portray our inner attitude? In some measure, the disciplines of Lent prayer, fasting, almsgiving-help us to bring these two closer together. But we need to be mindful that we don t take this too far. If we find ourselves doing these things for the praise we might get from others for our holiness, it s time to step back and examine our motives and priorities. What we are is more important than what we seem to be. Friday Reinventing Ourselves There s something attractive about being able to reinvent ourselves. It s difficult, though not impossible, to do this if we stay in the same place with the same people all our lives. Perhaps the lesson we can learn from Francis is not to let ourselves be limited by what people might think they know about us. Saturday Thy Kingdom Come Good and Gracious God, You know our human frailty, weakness, and sin. At times, we can easily forget who we are and who you are: The God who has been, is always, and will remain there for us. Forgive us for the times when we have been quick to demand, slow to understand, and even slower to live in such a way as to proclaim: thy kingdom come. 3 Volume 62, Number 10, Page 3 ~ From the Pastor ~ My heart's desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. Romans 10:1 My brothers and sisters in Christ, Stewardship of Finances Offertory $ 2, Donation for Lent Books $ 8.00 Ash Wednesday $ 5.00 Maintenance Fund $ $ 2, We ve already arrived at the Fourth Sunday of Lent. Traditionally, this Sunday is rather unique; like the Third Sunday of Advent ( Gaudete Sunday ), the Fourth Sunday of Lent is a small break in an otherwise penitential season. The vestments for this day can be rose, as they are on Gaudete Sunday in Advent, and flowers may adorn the Altar. This day is called Laetare Sunday, and takes its name from the opening words of the Mass, the Introit s Laetare, Jerusalem : Laetare Ierusalem: et conventum facite omnes qui diligitis eam: gaudete cum laetitia, qui in tristitia fuistis: ut exsultetis, et satiemini ab uberibus consolationis vestrae. (Psalm) Laetatus sum in his, quae dicta sunt mihi: in domum Domini ibimus. Rejoice, O Jerusalem: and come together all you that love her: rejoice with joy, you that have been in sorrow: that you may exult, and be filled from the breasts of your consolation. (Psalm) I rejoiced at the things that were said to me: we shall go into the house of the Lord. According to very ancient Roman tradition, serious penance and fasting did not begin until Monday of the third week before Easter (the day after this Sunday). Thus, Laetare was the last day before the period of strict discipline. It was not until later that Lent was lengthened to forty days, making a Tuesday into Mardi Gras literally in French Fat Tuesday, the day people had to use up the animal fats in their houses. Laetare is therefore a refreshment stop on the pilgrimage toward Easter: think of water-stations along the route of a Marathon race. Together with the joy of approaching Easter, this Sunday is about the heavenly Jerusalem we long for, which is anticipated in the Church and the Most Holy Eucharist. In a special way, I ask you to do all you can to attend the liturgies of Holy Week and the Sacred Triduum. Leave work early, reschedule ball games, etc. Holy Week is the high point of our Catholic Faith and hopefully our Lenten practices will have helped us to prepare well to celebrate it with great faith and devotion. New Apostolate for Girls! Fr. Vidrine would like to begin a new apostolate for girls and young ladies to serve the Sacred Liturgy at St. Anthony Church: Sacristans of the Child Jesus. The duties of this apostolate include preparing the sacred vessels and articles for Holy Mass in the sacristy before Mass begins, setting up the credence table, and then presenting the gifts for the Offertory of Holy Mass (or designating someone else to present the gifts for them). Any female parishioner of St. Anthony Church of school age (beginning with 3rd grade) who attends the Weekend Masses at 4pm on Saturday and 9am on Sunday is invited to join this important service to our Parish. They would be put on a schedule like the other liturgical ministers.
