2 LITURGY OF THE WORD In the Scriptures, God speaks to us, his people, in inspired words, opening to us the mystery of redemption and salvation and offering us spiritual nourishment. Christ himself is present in the midst of the faithful through his Word. As we are fed by the Word of God, we sit in attentive silence or offer our voices in song in full participation. We stand for the Gospel, showing great reverence for Jesus Christ present there, and finally we affirm the faith we have in the Creed before offering up our hearts to the Lord in our Universal Prayers. FIRST READING: 1 SAMUEL 3:3B-10,19 Samuel was sleeping in the temple of the LORD where the ark of God was. The LORD called to Samuel, who answered, "Here I am." Samuel ran to Eli and said, "Here I am. You called me." "I did not call you, " Eli said. "Go back to sleep." So he went back to sleep. Again the LORD called Samuel, who rose and went to Eli. "Here I am, " he said. "You called me." But Eli answered, "I did not call you, my son. Go back to sleep." At that time Samuel was not familiar with the LORD, because the LORD had not revealed anything to him as yet. The LORD called Samuel again, for the third time. Getting up and going to Eli, he said, "Here I am. You called me." Then Eli understood that the LORD was calling the youth. So he said to Samuel, "Go to sleep, and if you are called, reply, Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening." When Samuel went to sleep in his place, the LORD came and revealed his presence, calling out as before, "Samuel, Samuel!" Samuel answered, "Speak, for your servant is listening." Samuel grew up, and the LORD was with him, not permitting any word of his to be without effect. The Word of the Lord.. Thanks be to God RESPONSORIAL PSALM: PSALM 40:2,4,7-8,8-9,10 Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. I have waited, waited for the LORD, and he stooped toward me and heard my cry. And he put a new song into my mouth, a hymn to our God. Sacrifice or offering you wished not, but ears open to obedience you gave me. Holocausts or sin-offerings you sought not; then said I, "Behold I come." "In the written scroll it is prescribed for me, to do your will, O my God, is my delight, and your law is within my heart!" I announced your justice in the vast assembly; I did not restrain my lips, as you, O LORD, know. SECOND READING: 1 CORINTHIANS 6:13C-15A, Brothers and sisters: The body is not for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body; God raised the Lord and will also raise us by his power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? But whoever is joined to the Lord becomes one Spirit with him. Avoid immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the immoral person sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been purchased at a price. 3 GOSPEL: JOHN 1:35-42 John was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, "Behold, the Lamb of God." The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, "What are you looking for?" They said to him, "Rabbi" which translated means Teacher, "where are you staying?" He said to them, "Come, and you will see." So they went and saw where Jesus was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon. Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus. He first found his own brother Simon and told him, "We have found the Messiah" which is translated Christ. Then he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "You are Simon the son of John; you will be called Cephas" which is translated Peter. The Gospel of the Lord.. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. CHRIST THE REDEEMER ANNOUNCEMENTS CCD: There is NO CCD on Monday, January 15th in observance of Martin Luther King Day. Classes will resume for all 1st-5th graders on Monday, January 22nd. USHER DUES: Ushers are now collecting $5 dues. All ushers are asked to turn in their dues as soon as possible. Please place in a labeled envelope with your name, address, and phone number. Envelopes can be dropped off at the church office. ADORATION CHAPEL: We are looking for commited adorers for the following hours: Sundays from10am-11am, Thursdays from 1pm-2pm, Fridays from 1pm-2pm, and Saturdays from 5am-6am. Prayer Partners are needed on Fridays from 10am-11 am and from 11pm-12pm. Christ Redeemer's Adoration Chapel celebrated 23 years this past December 12th., the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. We are so proud of this achievement. The Chapel is not only manned by Parishioners of Christ the Redeemer but by Parishes all around us. We are so grateful to all the adorers. When we opened the Chapel, under Fr. Patrick O'Brien, our main intention those many years ago was for holy, happy and healthy Priest. The Diocese of Houma/Thibodaux has been very blessed with many Seminarians and Ordinations to the Priesthood in recent years, but we have to pray for many more years for Priest, if we want the Churches in our Diocese to remain open in the future. 4 FR. MARK A FEW THOUGHTS FROM SERVING YOU WELL BY COMMUNICATING WELL. A FEW THOUGHTS FOR JANUARY 13-14, These first two weeks have been great! As I shared with you last weekend, it s great to be back! After listening to many of you during my first days back on campus, I thought it would serve us well if I began to share a few answers to the most commonly asked questions. Each weekend I ll answer a few questions. However, this weekend, let s look at one question: the most commonly asked question. Q: Last time I was here I was assigned for six years. Yet, I left early. Then, Fr. Mitch was assigned for six years and he left early. So, how long am I going to be here? R: That s a good question. I appreciate the question, and I further appreciate from where within us the question comes. So, let s together unpack the answer: How long am I going to be here? It is important for us to be reminded that the Church is not of human origin. The priesthood is not of human origin. Even our community, our parish, is not of human origin. Any attempt to answer pastoral questions from a human perspective will always fall short. We will eventually become frustrated because that which we are speaking of was not, and will never be, a human institution. Jesus Christ founded the Church; Jesus Christ established the priesthood. Furthermore, Jesus Christ is not dead. He is active and alive. We never have to consider: What would Jesus do? The reality - the reality which is more real than anything else - is that Jesus is alive now. This is good news. I once heard someone say: God takes 100% responsibility for lives that are 100% entrusted to Him. J The Roman Catholic Church, the ordained ministerial priesthood, the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux, and Christ the Redeemer parish do not belong to us, they belong to God. They are His. As they all belong to God, God Himself assumes 100% responsibility for that which is 100% entrusted to Him. This means God does with His priesthood as He wills. Thus, it s not necessarily about the Priesthood - or the priest, it s about what God is doing through His priesthood. God is active and alive in the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux. God is doing amazing things. God will lead the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux as He wills. Thus, it s really about what God is doing through His diocese. God is active and alive here at Christ the Redeemer. God is doing, and will continue to do, life-changing things. God will lead our parish as He wills. Thus, it s really about what God is doing through His parish. What all this means is obedience is everything. To the degree that all of us - the pastor, the staff, volunteer leaders and all the parishioners - are obedient to God is the degree to which we will see God move at Christ the Redeemer. Everyone knows what it s like when we as a parish are in line with what God wants. We feel it when we are doing what God wants us to do. Likewise, everyone knows what it s like when we as a parish are not line with what God wants. We feel it when we are doing what we want to do; we feel the impact of poor decision making that is not discerned well. Good ideas will never yield the fruit of God s ideas. Obedience is everything. The only way that Christ the Redeemer will maximally bless the lives of parishioners is if we are obedient to God.
