Thanks to the strength of the Word of Christ, each one of us can make ourselves the brother or sister of those whom we encounter. Daily Reflection Thursday A Revolution of Christ s Love A revolution motivated by the power of love instead of arms, a revolution that seeks not the overthrow but the conversion of society: This became Romero s focus during his final three years as archbishop of San Salvador. For the ruling elite, conversion meant the softening of their stony hearts and an embrace of the biblical truth that all people are equally beloved by God and Friday A Revolution of Christ s Love Equally deserving of the world s resources. For the campesinos, conversion meant an awareness that their misery was not the will of God, that Christ suffered along with them, and that the Gospel could empower and liberate them. For the Church, conversion meant being a source of material and spiritual hope for the hungry, thirsty, forlorn, naked, sick, and oppressed. Saturday Pastor, Prophet, Martyr The priest s task is to bring the people to God, and the prophet s to bring God to the people. The martyr s unique role is to display a devotion to God and the Kingdom so boundlessly loving that it reignites in the rest of us a faith that may have grown tepid or even cold. This is the great truth embodied in the resurrection, and every individual martyrdom, including Romero s, is a reflection of it. Martyrdom is a victory, not a defeat, a loud proclamation of God s glory, not a silencing of God s Word, an affirmation, albeit a bittersweet one, that human wickedness can never win in the end.

3 Volume 64, Number 44, Page 3 ~ From the Pastor ~ God our Savior desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of truth. 1 Timothy 2:3-4 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Last week, we looked at how God the Father relates to God the Son. This week, we see how these two relate to the Holy Spirit. Due to the density of this section, it will be split into two parts. This first part touches on the basic understanding of the Holy Spirit. But one thing to note is that, in paragraph 243, it describes the Holy Spirit as a paraclete. This comes from Scripture itself, namely in John 14:16 when Jesus says, and [the Father] will give you another Paraclete, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth Why is the Spirit called this? As noted below, Paraclete also means Advocate. But what is an advocate? Think of a court trial. In a court case, the advocate is one who pleads the cause of the person they represent. In other words, they are there to support that person and defend that person. Even in general, an advocate is one who supports or defends someone (such as an advocate for peace). What does this mean for us? It means that Jesus, knowing He would have to return to the Father, sends us the Spirit to be our mediator. The Spirit works in the Church and helps us in our lives, defends us against Evil, and pleads for us to the Father. Essentially, the Holy Spirit, as our Paraclete, is God s gift to us to help give us new life through salvation. With this great gift in mind, I will close with a powerful meditation that comes from the Great Jubilee Year In that year, the Theological- Historical Commission at the Vatican came out with Catechetical Texts on the Holy Trinity. It had this to say about the Holy Spirit in its relation to the Father: The Church believes that God creates everything, giving existence and life through Christ in the Spirit. And it is in the Holy Spirit that God the Father in loving ek-stasis ( emerging from himself ) transcends his unearthly life and makes room for his creatures. The Holy Spirit is the divine person through which God the Father immediately animates life. He is the final touch through which God unites with his creatures, saves them from non-existence, sustains them, renews them, and directs them toward their fulfillment. Being in the Spirit equals being in life. Paragraph 2. The Father II. The Revelation of God as Trinity The Father and the Son revealed by the Holy Spirit (Part One) #243 Before his Passover, Jesus announced the sending of "another Paraclete" (Advocate), the Holy Spirit. At work since creation, having previously "spoken through the prophets", the Spirit will now be with and in the disciples, to teach them and guide them "into all the truth". The Holy Spirit is thus revealed as another divine person with Jesus and the Father. #244 The eternal origin of the Holy Spirit is revealed in his mission in time. The Spirit is sent to the apostles and to the Church both by the Father in the name of the Son, and by the Son in person, once he had returned to the Father. The sending of the person of the Spirit after Jesus' glorification reveals in its fullness the mystery of the Holy Trinity. #245 The apostolic faith concerning the Spirit was confessed by the second ecumenical council at Constantinople (381): "We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father." 71 By this confession, the Church recognizes the Father as "the source and origin of the whole divinity". But the eternal origin of the Spirit is not unconnected with the Son's origin: "The Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, is God, one and equal with the Father and the Son, of the same substance and also of the same nature... Yet he is not called the Spirit of the Father alone,... but the Spirit of both the Father and the Son." The Creed of the Church from the Council of Constantinople confesses: "With the Father and the Son, he is worshipped and glorified." Let us praise the Lord, and give Him thanks! Thanks. Diocese of Lafayette: Centennial News A Diocese of All Saints The Churches of the Diocese of Lafayette are under the patronage of a wide array of Saints. The Blessed Mother is the most popular patron of Acadiana Churches with 34 Churches under her patronage through a variety of titles. St. Joseph has 14 Churches under his patronage. Other patrons span the centuries from St. Peter to St. Pius X, and from St. Mary Magdalen to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. Only 8 Church parishes do not evoke a Saint in their patronage. Five of those belong to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, while Holy Ghost, Holy Trinity, and Holy Cross round out the eight. Centennial Mass All are Invited the closing Mass for the Centennial Year of our Diocese will be December 12 th at the Cajundome Convention Center at 6pm. Our Diocese and the wonderful people of our diocese and how God has poured forth His Love and guidance upon us in these last 100 Years will be the focus A Century of Love. Along with the Mass, there will be an Historical Display before and after the Mass as well as a presentation of the many people and cultures of our Diocese.
