2 Annual Memorial Mass at Our lady of Sorrows During the month of November, which begins with the celebration of All Saints and All Souls, the church is called in a special way to remember our brothers and sisters who have gone to their rest. During the 10:45 a.m. Mass on Sunday, November 8, Our Lady of Sorrows Parish will have a special remembrance of those whose funerals were celebrated here during the past year. Parishioners are also invited to include names of family members and friends who died during the past year but whose funerals were celebrated elsewhere. The Mass will include a reading of the names of all those we are remembering. May this be, for those who grieve, an experience of comfort in their sorrow and great hope for the future. The meeting was mostly spent brainstorming ideas to increase the number of parishioners coming to Mass and ways to build a strong OLOS community. The minutes of the meeting are on our website. Limited copies are in the back of church for those parishioners without access to the Internet. The PPC encourages you to read and reflect on the ideas. Your feedback is most welcome. 30 th Sunday in Ordinary Time An old man was walking around a lake and the water had dropped off rather quickly, stranding many fish in the shallow water and mud. As he walked along, he would pick up a fish and toss it into deeper water. A woman walking by saw this and told him that he was crazy! He d never throw all the fish back into the water. What does it matter? she asked. Picking up a fish, he said, It matters to this one. Jesus does not heal the whole world all at once, nor does he reveal Himself to all in one huge display of power and glory. Although He preaches to large crowds, He is keenly aware of individual people and specific needs that each one has. He heals one by one. He teaches the Apostles privately. He raises Lazurus from the dead. Each person has his or her own encounter with Jesus and, to each one that encounter matters. It is easy to feel lost in our world where we become just a number, or another screen name in cyber space. It is easy to feel disconnected from God, wondering if He really knows me or really cares about me. The truth is that God knows us by name. He made us in His own image and shares His life with us. We are not strangers, but sons and daughters. Keep the faith and trust the Lord. 4 FAITH FORMATION NEWS: Our Series, Pope Francis: His Travels and His Writings, will continue on November 14, focusing on the environmental encyclical Laudato Si. Fr. Frank Clooney, SJ, will celebrate the 4:30 p.m. liturgy and speak afterward in O Connell Hall with Brandt Henderson. Each will focus on a variety of themes in the encyclical and invite group discussion. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome! We will celebrate our annual Advent Workshop the morning of Sunday, November 22. If you can help plan our Workshop by offering your creative craft ideas or helping to prepare supplies or by helping out the day of the Workshop, please contact Monica LaFond at monicalafond@me.com by October 25. Also on November 22, OLOS will have the honor of hosting the Sharon Interfaith Thanksgiving Service at 7:00 p.m. Susanne Osberg is choosing music for the evening and will lead the Interfaith Choir which will gather at 5:30 pm for practice. Vinnie is very excited to begin planning (already) for a Christmas Pageant at this year s upcoming 5 p.m. Christmas Eve Liturgy. Sharon Interfaith Thanksgiving Service On November 22, Our Lady of Sorrows Parish will have the honor of hosting the Sharon Interfaith Thanksgiving Service at 7 p.m. Susanne Osberg is choosing music for the evening and will lead the Interfaith Choir which will gather at 5:30 p.m. for practice. We need a small group of volunteers to help prepare and serve a collation for the service and others to be greeters at the church doors. Please contact Fr. Vinnie at padre@olossharon.org or Fabiola Aguilera at faguilera@olossharon.org as soon as possible or call Advent Evening Prayer Advent Evening Prayer will be held during the season of Advent each Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the church, December 2, 9, 16 and 23. Plan on giving yourself the gift of being still amidst the holiday bustle in an oasis of quiet beautiful prayer as we prepare for the Coming of the Lord. Summer 2016 Mission Trip Informational Meeting If you are a middle school student, high school student, or adult parishioner who is interested in learning about OLOS summer mission trip opportunities, you are invited to an informational meeting on Monday, November 9 at 7:00 p.m. in O Connell Hall. The purpose of this meeting is to provide information about potential trips (dates, locations, accommodations, program overviews) and to answer questions, but also to gauge interest. If you have gone on a mission trip before and are considering going again, if you are thinking about serving in this way for the first time, or if you just want to learn more about the service opportunities provided by OLOS, please come! Service Opportunity for Middle School Students and All Adults On Wednesday, November 4, middle school students and adults of the parish are invited to prepare and serve a meal at Conway House, a homeless shelter for women and children in Middleborough, MA. We will meet in the OLOS parking lot at 4:00 p.m., drive together to serve at Conway House from 5-7 p.m., and will return to the OLOS parking lot by 8:00 p.m. You can sign up for this service opportunity by visiting the OLOS Youth Ministry Page. 5 Sharon, MA From Senior Deacon Mike As I look ahead to November, I am struck as always by the two first days November 1 being the feast of All Saints and November 2 being the feast of All Souls. We celebrate All Saints Day to remember the particularity of people whose life is emblematic of the universal call to holiness. We celebrate All Souls Day to remember and pray for the souls of all the faithful that through the mercy of God they may rest in peace I suggest that these separate days are not mutually exclusive. Are not our friends and family members for whom we pray on November 2 worthy of our consideration of their own call to holiness? Do we not pray on November 1 for our patron saints that they are at peace in eternal rest? I suggest the two days are linked in contrary but similar ways to our own hope in life and death and beyond. Saints of the Week, Simon and Jude - October 28 St. Simon and St. Jude were two of Jesus twelve apostles. St. Simon was known as the Caananite or the Zealot by other evangelists and St. Jude was a blood relative of Jesus and known as one of the brethren of the Lord. Little, however, is known about either of these apostles after the events at Pentecost. Western traditions suggest that St. Simon preached in Egypt before joining St. Jude in Persia, where they were both martyred. In recent times, St Jude has become popular as the patron of hopeless causes. This probably originates from early Christians confusing St Jude with Judas, who betrayed Jesus. As a result people never prayed for his help and so devotion to St Jude became somewhat of a lost or hopeless cause. Collection October 18 The average cost to run the parish is $11,732 per week and our expectation is that 69% ($8,095) will come from the weekly offertory. On October 18, the parishioners contributed $6,381. World Mission Sunday Propagation of the Faith $672 was collected last weekend on Mission Sunday for the Propagation of the Faith. If you were unable to contribute to this special collection, you may do so this weekend. A check will be sent to the Propagation of the Faith this week. Thank you. Area Open Houses Bishop Feehan High School in Attleboro is a Catholic coeducational college preparatory school that serves grades Bishop Feehan will be hosting an Open House on November 1 starting at 1:00 p.m. in the school s auditorium. Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood is hosting an Open House today, October 25, from 9:00 12:00 p.m. You may register for the entrance exam at the Open House.
