2 Last Day of School Party We had a great party on the last day of School! The kids enjoyed pizza, ice cream and games. Thank you to Domenic Roberto and Christian Villanueva from the Youth Commission for organizing the games and to Alejandra Aguilar and Fr. Vinnie for helping to serve the food. Also, a special thank you to Fabiola Aguilera for all her work to make this party a success. We wish everyone a safe and happy Summer!

He preaches to them and, despite what they have heard and the things they have witnessed, they do not accept Him. Their lack of faith so distressed Him that He could not work a miracle there, except for a few cures. Their closed minds and hearts blocked the flow of grace and nothing happened. All too often in the church today, priests, deacons and religious are greeted with skepticism and doubt. In their own towns and parishes, their ministry and preaching is greeted with gossip and indifference. The lack of appreciation is a heavy burden that is added to the overwhelming work of ministering to others, especially in times of great need. As a community of faith, we need to honor the work of those who serve, for their task is neither easy nor light. First, pray for them that they may have the strength and courage to serve and lead. They too are clay vessels of God s grace. Second, tell them you appreciate them and their work. Offer positive support for a homily well done, a special visit to the sick, or ministry at times of funerals, weddings and sacraments. Your gifts of time, talent and treasure go a long way to boost the morale and confidence of those who serve us. It lets them know concretely that they too are part of the community and not just a functionary in times of need. Be supportive, be helpful, and be generous. Adult Volunteer is Needed to Help with High School Summer Mission Trip One adult volunteer is needed to help with chaperoning and driving during the high school summer mission trip, Aug. 2 - Aug. 5. FAITH FORMATION As we enter summer, the dawn of the school year is already on my mind. As we point ourselves toward the future with Fr. Vinnie as our Administrator-Pastor, I'd like to provide a brief update about what is going on currently in the Faith Formation Office. Our Lady of Sorrows conviction that faith formation is a lifelong process remains strong. The primary emphasis of building faith revolves around deepening our relationship with Jesus through prayer, service and worship. The Office strives to offer a wide variety of programs to meet each disciple's needs along the faith journey. In order to do this, many hands are necessary. We are currently searching for a Youth Minister who can hopefully come on board and "shadow" Kerry Payson before she departs on August 21. We will begin a search in several weeks for a part-time Administrative Assistant for the Faith Formation Office. The youth calendar is almost completed and registration will begin after an Administrative Assistant is hired and trained. Plans are underway to begin several new Adult Faith Formation initiatives. More on this as plans solidify. As always, help is needed: catechists to help teach in our PreK through Grade Five Sunday AM program and Small Group Facilitators for our monthly Middle School and Confirmation One programs (Teen Peer Ministers help facilitate the Confirmation Two program). Volunteers are always needed to help plan and execute the Advent Workshop and Parish Assembly. In addition, the Faith Formation Commission is seeking new members. All are welcome. Whether you prefer a one-time specific activity, an ongoing commitment to a committee or a teaching opportunity, there's a place for you. 5 From Senior Deacon Mike The scripture passages we hear this weekend delineate the role of a prophet and the role of the Spirit in the words and deeds that come forth. Both Ezekiel and the Gospel from St. Mark echo the words of a prophet and the unanticipated reaction of the listeners. Jesus questioned the faith of those in his hometown. His words seemed to fall on deaf ears. How would we have reacted if we were in the synagogue on that occasion? Isle Marks Food Pantry SUMMER! It's finally here and while we may be rejoicing especially after last winter, for many of the Food Pantry clients it puts an extra burden on parents who now have children at home all day that used to receive lunch and sometimes breakfast in school. So once again the Christian Service Commission and the volunteers at the Food Pantry are asking that you continue to remember them with your usual generosity of weekly donations. They can be left in the rear of the church, in Bullock Center and O'Connell Hall. As always, the volunteers and the families are deeply grateful for your donations. July 4 Independence Day Prayer for Our Country God of all nations and ages, we recall the day when our country claimed its place among the family of nations. For what has been achieved we give you thanks; for the work that still remains we ask your help. This weekend, we rededicate ourselves to your service and to the works of justice and freedom for all. Grant that under your providence our country may share your blessings with all the peoples of the earth. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen. On behalf of Fr. Collection June 28 The average cost to run the parish is $11,732 per week and our expectation is that 69% ($8,095) will come from the weekly offertory. On June 28, the parishioners contributed $6,184. $813 was contributed to the second collection which was for the Holy Father (Peter s Pence). Thank you for your generosity. Saint of the Week Benedict, July 11 St. Benedict was born at Nursia in c.480, the brother of St. Scholastica. Most of what is known of his life comes from St. Gregory the Great s writings. He left his studies in Rome to become a hermit in the mountains near Subiaco, and after a while many followers joined him. It is believed that some monks tried to poison him, possibly out of jealousy or due to his strict discipline. He moved to Monte Cassino, where he completed his Rule; a written guide for those living a monastic life, with a strong emphasis on obedience, moderation and community life. Although Benedict never became a priest or ever intended to found a religious order, his Rule became the fundamental monastic code in Europe into the early middle ages. Welcome to.
