We build up burdens upon ourselves and when we are completely stressed, then we run to God. But God says, come to me and trust in me before you are worried and weak. He wants it all. Tuesday Let Go; Let God He can handle it and he can give us the grace we need and the strength we need to follow his will. Trust in God and, above all, have faith. Wednesday Wisdom from Mary Our Lady said that the rosary can stop wars, and can bring world peace. We have to do what she said, and live good lives. There s no other plan from heaven that s so specific, for what we re going through now. The Blessed Mother spelled it out. Prayer, penance, the First Saturday s devotion and live a good, holy life. That s the answer. Daily Reflection Thursday Where Charity and Love Prevail It is useless to twlk when things speak for themselves in such an eloquent manner. There is a clear and precise way of finding God, and we have so much need of him. There are moments in everyone s life when the need becomes acute; it is when our pride is overcome by suffering and humiliation that we finally look for God. Where can we find him? The way is clear: Where there is charity, there is love; where there is love, there is God. Friday The Desires of Our Souls We as human persons are made with infinite desires that only God can fulfill. But because we re fallen, we tend to live at the level of our superficial desires desires for comfort, fun, fame, wealth, pleasure, success. These desires are not bad, but the rosary helps us be more aware of the soul s deepest desires, which are for God. Saturday The Desires of Our Souls As Saint Catherine of Siena taught, the greatest gift we can give to God in prayer is not the finite work of saying the words but our infinitely desirous love for God that is expressed in those words and that is being drawn out of our souls in prayer. Sunday I Am God and You Are Not A woman on a much-needed retreat sought to know more about God and herself. She prayed, Who are you and who am I? For three days she prayed this refrain over a hundred times but no answer came. As she was leaving the retreat grounds she tried a last time: Who are you and who am I? An answer came, a revelation: I am God and you are not! In that answer lies the meaning of prayer. God is our loving, creating, sanctifying God we are creatures who are not lords of this world or of own lives. God is our Maker, our Sustainer, and our End. As it was mentioned at mass this weekend, the BSA has gone through a significant change in structure and in setting distinct goals, which can be found in the pamphlets available in church. Please consider contributing to this appeal if you are able. If you have any questions, please feel free to talk with myself or Nichole Hatten. Next weekend will be commitment weekend to fill out pledge cards. For the Catechism, things are also easy this week as we come to another In Brief section, giving us a recap of what we have looked at for the past few weeks. Remember, this part of the Catechism has talked about how Divine Revelation is transmitted to us, in the ways that God has seen fit. May this knowledge spur us on to better know, understand, and live our faith for the Lord! Tues., February 6: Saint Paul Miki and Companions, Martyrs: Jesuit scholastic, and his twenty-five companions, including two other Jesuits, six Franciscans, fifteen tertiaries, and two laymen, were crucified by order of the ruler Hideyoshi 5 Feb at Nagasaki; among them the Mexican, Felipe de Jesus, first martyr from the Americas to be beatified; protomartyrs of the Far East (canonized in 1862 by Pope Pius IX). Thurs., February 8: Saint Jerome Emiliani; Saint Josephine Bakhita, Virgin: Jerome Emiliani, d of the plague; Venetian soldier whose conversion led to the founding (1534) of the Clerks Regular of Somascha, today numbering about 530 members; dedicated to the poor and the education of youth; patron of orphans and abandoned children. Josephine was born around 1869 in Sudan and raised in the Islamic faith. Kidnapped as a child by slave traders, she was given the name, Bakhita, meaning lucky one. She was sold to a number of owners until she was purchased around the age of twelve by the Italian Consul Callisto Legnani. He brought her to Italy and, while serving as a nanny, was sent to live with the Canossian Sisters in Venice. There she was formally introduced to the faith, baptized Guiseppina, and eventually granted her freedom. In 1896 she joined the Conassian Daughters of Charity, and for twenty-five years served her sisters as cook, seamstress, and portress at their houses in Venice, Verona, and Schio. She was especially beloved by her students for her sweet nature and musical voice. After a long and painful illness she dies in Pope John Paul II canonized this first Sudanese saint 1 October 2000 as a witness to evangelical reconciliation and a model of freedom. Lenten Obligations As with every year, Holy Mother Church asks us to make particular sacrifices during the season of Lent. This is because Lent invites us to focus on our sinfulness and our need to make greater effort in turning to the Lord. The ancient practice of doing works of penance is essential to this process of conversion, using outward actions to move our hearts closer to Christ. The following is pulled from the USCCB website and the Code of Canon Law: Fasting: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. Abstinence: Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards. These are the penitential obligations we have during Lent. But as always, we can and should do some private works of penance to help better ourselves, focusing on the traditional practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving (i.e. doing works of charity. Diocese of Lafayette: Centennial News Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish On February 10, 1935, Immaculate Heart of Mary officially opened its doors as the second church parish in the city of Lafayette established to serve the Black Catholic community. The parish was created by Bishop Jeanmard as a ministry base for four newly ordained African American priests who were members of the Divine Word missionary order: Frs. Anthony Bourges, SVD; Maurice Rousseve, SVD; Francis Wade, SVD; and Vincent Smith, SVD. Their success at this parish proved to be a turning point in the history of Black Catholic Priests in the United States. Happy Birthday!
