We will never have it all together until the end of time, when we meet God face-to-face and experience the power of the resurrection. In the meantime, our inner peace depends on how we forgive and accept forgiveness. Only in this way can we truly experience the freedom that the sons and daughters Tuesday We Are Pilgrims in the World Of a loving God are invited to accept. Only by forgiving others and accepting forgiveness can we live in harmony. Wednesday The Heart Longs for God Spiritual desire is the longing of the heart for relationship with God that brings happiness and peace. Francis of Assisi was a passionate person, a dreamer, a lover and a person of desire. When he felt his desire filled in hearing the gospel, he found the answer to his deepest longings and changed his life accordingly. Daily Reflection Thursday The Heart Longs for God He became a follower of Christ. Francis life shows us that we must be attentive to our desires if we are to find the fulfillment of our lives in God. Friday The Sea of God s Boundless Love In the weakness and frailty of our lives, we can turn to God with the confidence of children and enter into communion with him. In the face of so many wounds that hurt us and could harden our hearts, we are called to dive into the sea of prayer, which is the sea of God s boundless love, to taste his tenderness. Saturday Live as Jesus Lived The New Evangelization calls us to open our eyes to those who might say they have no one. Most likely they won t cry out for help, yet can we befriend those we see each day? Can we stop and notice them as Jesus did? Can we share the good things God has done for us after we have accepted his love and committed ourselves to him? It s not easy. It s easier to get on a plane, fly to Israel, and walk where Jesus walked than it is to stay at home and live as Jesus lived. 3 Volume 64, Number 38, Page 3 ~ From the Pastor ~ God our Savior desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of truth. 1 Timothy 2:3-4 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, This has been an eventful week for our country. First, we had the anniversary of 9/11, remembering all the lives that were lost on that fateful day. Second, Hurricane Florence hits the Carolinas. We pray that Our Lady of Prompt Succor will protect all those who have to experience this terrible storm and that damage may be kept to a minimum. In terrible events such as this, it moves the depths of our hearts to seek out God, who alone is the one who can give us peace. This is something we have been looking at in the Catechism over the last few weeks, and today s lesson is no different. We are still looking at who God is in Himself, but here we begin a small section that talks about two things we must know about who God is: He is Truth and Love. For today s lesson, we look at God as Truth. I believe I have said it before, but Truth is objective, and God is proof of that. He is the Truth we seek. Why is this important? Think about the opposite: lies and falsehoods. What do they do? They cover-up and obscure the truth, they deceive, they sow confusion, etc. All of this stems from the Evil One, who is the Father of Lies. It was the lie of the Ancient Serpent that led to the fall of Adam and Eve, causing them to doubt God s word. But what, then, of the Truth? If God is truth, that means He does the opposite. He brings clarity. He enlightens. He reveals. He restores faith. Living in a world today in which so many lies are spoken, so many things are covered up, and so many things are obscured, it can be hard to know who to trust or what to believe. Take comfort, friends, for as God revealed by His very name, He is truth. He wants to reveal Himself to us. He wants us to live by the light. Not to doubt His words (as this is the devil s doing), but to believe God with confidence knowing that the Truth of Himself will set us free. As Pope St. John Paul II once said: If you want peace, work for justice. If you want justice, defend life. If you want life, embrace the truth the truth revealed by God. Paragraph 1. I Believe in God III. God, He Who Is, is Truth and Love (Part One) #214 God, "HE WHO IS", revealed himself to Israel as the one "abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness". These two terms express summarily the riches of the divine name. In all his works God displays, not only his kindness, goodness, grace and steadfast love, but also his trustworthiness, constancy, faithfulness and truth. "I give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness." He is the Truth, for "God is light and in him there is no darkness"; "God is love", as the apostle John teaches. God is Truth #215 "The sum of your word is truth; and every one of your righteous ordinances endures forever." "And now, O LORD God, you are God, and your words are true"; this is why God's promises always come true. God is Truth itself, whose words cannot deceive. This is why one can abandon oneself in full trust to the truth and faithfulness of his word in all things. The beginning of sin and of man's fall was due to a lie of the tempter who induced doubt of God's word, kindness and faithfulness. #216 God's truth is his wisdom, which commands the whole created order and governs the world. God, who alone made heaven and earth, can alone impart true knowledge of every created thing in relation to himself. #217 God is also truthful when he reveals himself - the teaching that comes from God is "true instruction". When he sends his Son into the world it will be "to bear witness to the truth": "We know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, to know him who is true." Let us praise the Lord, and give Him thanks! In Christ the Lord, Fr. Wed., September 19: Saint Januarius, Bishop, Martyr: d. c. 305; according to his legend, thrown to bears at Pozzuolo under Diocletian; bishop of Benevento; as early as 1389, his blood has liquefied on this and other days each year; patron of Naples. Thurs., September 20: Saints Andrew Kin Tae-gon, Priest, Paul Chong Ha-sang, and Companions, Martyrs: Andrew, born in Seoul, Korea, was a convert to the faith and was ordained Korea s first native priest. His father was a martyr. In 1846 Andrew was tortured and beheaded along with his lay associate, seminarian Paul Chong Ha-sang. Between 1839 and 1867, 103 martyrs gave their lives for the faith in Korea. Fri., September 21: SAINT MATTHEW, APOSTLE AND EVANGELIST: According to the bishop Papias, the Church s canonical text of Matthew draws upon the Aramaic traditions associated with his name. Composed c. 85, the gospel is generally arranged in an alternating pattern of narrative and discourse. Intended for a largely Jewish-Christian audience, it seeks to portray Christianity as consistent with the Jewish tradition and a continuation of it. Tradition holds that Matthew preached in Judea and in Ethiopia where he was martyred; symbolized by the winged human being; mentioned in the Roman Canon, patron of accountants and customs officers. For details, contact Sidney Bennett at PRAYER FOR PROTECTION DURING HURRICANE SEASON O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed Your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land, and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son on our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem, where a stormless eternity awaits us. Amen. [Composed by Most Rev. Maurice Schexnayder ( ),Second Bishop of Lafayette ( ) in 1957]
