We realize and acknowledge that the universe was not designed to revolve around me and my petty wants and desires. Indeed, by virtue of my baptism, I am called to walk in the footprints of Jesus who, in emptying himself, surrendering and serving God s will, has become the Lord and Divine Master of the universe. Tuesday Reflecting on the Peace Prayer Praying and reflecting upon the Peace Prayer of Saint Francis shine a light into the deep recesses of the soul. The prayer reveals how our pride sometimes hides behind the best of intentions and has wrapped its tentacles Wednesday Reflecting on the Peace Prayer Around our decisions, feelings, and relationships. It challenges us to break free from the mirror of me and focus our attention through the window of thee, thus looking outward and responding to the voices of those who are angry, injured, confused and sad. The prayer also exposes how we defensively seek to be justified and understood, how self-pity insists upon consolation and love. Daily Reflection Thursday Our Inner Landscapes There are outer landscapes in which we all move and breathe and experience our being and inner landscapes to nurture and visit too! We pray in the inner landscape of our soul, but the outer world can bring us to prayer with utter gratitude, sorrow and thanksgiving. At times the world around us seems to rush in, and we are moved to prayer as effortless as breath. Friday Our Inner Landscapes We are awake in the present moment, more alive, more present than ever before.. Saturday We Take God Everywhere We Go You, I, and everyone baptized into Christ takes God everywhere we go. We communicate the presence of God even if we do not mention him. Imagine intentionally living this truth of the faith. Imagine the lives that will be touched by our willingness to be what we have become. Imagine knowing that you bring God into your meetings, the supermarket, your athletic competitions, the classroom, etc. We are never alone, we have with us at all times all that we need, if only we believe. Yet, the power of God s grace is such that one who, like Francis of Assisi, is able to trust God sufficiently can enter into the cave of the heart, the place where Incarnation takes place, and be transformed into the triumph of love. 3 Volume 64, Number 32, Page 3 ~ From the Pastor ~ God our Savior desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of truth. 1 Timothy 2:3-4 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, This week in the Catechism, we continue looking at the Creed by examining its main components. Essentially, the Creed is divided into three main parts based on the greatest mystery of our faith: the Most Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). However, an interesting point made below comes from St. Ambrose, who taught that when you break the creed down further, it contains twelve points based on the Twelve Apostles this reminds us that our faith is thanks to the foundations laid by them through Christ! Of this St. Ambrose writes, As then there are twelve Apostles, so are there twelve pronouncements... He lists them as follows: the Trinity, the Blessed Mother, Jesus Passion, Jesus Death and Burial, the Resurrection, the Ascension, Jesus sitting at the right hand of the Father, Jesus as judge of the living and the dead, the holy Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, and the Resurrection of the Dead. From this point on in the Catechism, we will be looking at these points more in depth. But taking this lesson from St. Ambrose, the Creed should not just remind us of the Trinity it should also remind us of the Apostles for whom our faith stands on. Only if we believe these teachings can we call ourselves Catholic and live this faith. I encourage you, when you get a chance, to take a creed particularly the Nicene Creed and reflect on the words of that prayer. Think about what God has done for you, what He has revealed to you, and let that increase your faith all the more. Section Two: The Profession of the Christian Faith (Part Two) #190 And so the Creed is divided into three parts: "the first part speaks of the first divine Person and the wonderful work of creation; the next speaks of the second divine Person and the mystery of his redemption of men; the final part speaks of the third divine Person, the origin and source of our sanctification." These are "the three chapters of our [baptismal] seal". #191 "These three parts are distinct although connected with one another. According to a comparison often used by the Fathers, we call them articles. Indeed, just as in our bodily members there are certain articulations which distinguish and separate them, so too in this profession of faith, the name articles has justly and rightly been given to the truths we must believe particularly and distinctly." In accordance with an ancient tradition, already attested to by St. Ambrose, it is also customary to reckon the articles of the Creed as twelve, thus symbolizing the fullness of the apostolic faith by the number of the apostles. #192 Through the centuries many professions or symbols of faith have been articulated in response to the needs of the different eras: the creeds of the different apostolic and ancient Churches, e.g., the Quicumque, also called the Athanasian Creed; the professions of faith of certain Councils, such as Toledo, Lateran, Lyons, Trent; or the symbols of certain popes, e.g., the Fides Damasi or the Credo of the People of God of Paul VI. #193 None of the creeds from the different stages in the Church's life can be considered superseded or irrelevant. They help us today to attain and deepen the faith of all times by means of the different summaries made of it. Among all the creeds, two occupy a special place in the Church's life: #194 The Apostles' Creed is so called because it is rightly considered to be a faithful summary of the apostles' faith. It is the ancient baptismal symbol of the Church of Rome. Its great authority arises from this fact: it is "the Creed of the Roman Church, the See of Peter the first of the apostles, to which he brought the common faith". #195 The Niceno-Constantinopolitan or Nicene Creed draws its great authority from the fact that it stems from the first two ecumenical Councils (in 325 and 381). It remains common to all the great Churches of both East and West to this day. #196 Our presentation of the faith will follow the Apostles' Creed, which constitutes, as it were, "the oldest Roman catechism". The presentation will be completed however by constant references to the Nicene Creed, which is often more explicit and more detailed. #197 As on the day of our Baptism, when our whole life was entrusted to the "standard of teaching", let us embrace the Creed of our life-giving faith. To say the Credo with faith is to enter into communion with God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and also with the whole Church which transmits the faith to us and in whose midst we believe: This Creed is the spiritual seal, our heart's meditation and an ever-present guardian; it is, unquestionably, the treasure of our soul. Let us praise the Lord, and give Him thanks! In Christ the Lord, Fr. Meeting every Wed. at 4:00 pm in the church hall. For details, contact Sidney Bennett at PRAYER FOR PROTECTION DURING HURRICANE SEASON O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed Your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land, and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son on our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem, where a stormless eternity awaits us. Amen. [Composed by Most Rev. Maurice Schexnayder ( ),Second Bishop of Lafayette ( ) in 1957]
