Francis knew this was true by means of lifetime of learning how to live with all creatures, loving them and serving Daily Reflection Thursday Give Thanks for All God s Creatures Them, and giving God thanks for them. And now, two years before he will embrace Sister Death, God assures Francis and us that everything belongs to everything else, and everything belongs to God. So everything is thereby holy and worthy of care, and reverence, and a song of God s praise. Friday Time Speeds by Us Time speeds by, one event falling into another. I see this now. Was I in danger of reaching the end without stopping to see what was being given? I kept looking up and another year was gone. Another holiday. Another birthday. I was living in my mind. I wasn t really here. Now a door swings open and life is looking back at me. Saturday Time Speeds by Us The roses, the trees, the birds, the stars. Everything is watching. I ask myself, have I been? While I was lost in lists of things to do and goals to realize, where was I? Sunday Eating Is a Moral Act Christianity is one religion that places upon us the obligation to care for the least of our sisters and brothers here on earth if we want to share the banquet the Lord of hosts has prepared in heaven for those who believe. The image of an overflowing cornucopia reminds us that eating ought to be not only an obligation but a celebration. Such a table is a sign of hospitality. When a cook prepares everything from scratch for her guests, no one doubts the efficacy of her loving care for each ingredient. Everyone leaves the table in a jovial mood, satisfied in body and soul, having been the happy recipients of another s hospitality. We leave the table with a full stomach but, more important, our spirit feels bathed in the warmth of love. 3 Volume 64, Number 48, Page 3 ~ From the Pastor ~ God our Savior desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of truth. 1 Timothy 2:3-4 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, I hope you all had a very good Thanksgiving this past week! A good time for family and friends and, above all, a time to eat plenty! This week, I thought I would do something a bit different. Instead of looking at the Catechism, I let us take a break and focus on the time we are in now; that is, let us look at this feast of Christ the King, as well as the Advent season. Christ the King is a grand feast it might not feel like it, but it is! Why is that? Well, the feast was instituted by Pope Pius XI in his encyclical Quas Primas. He asked the Church to establish this feast because all feast days, affect both mind and heart, and have a salutary effect upon the whole of man s nature. In other words, every feast day in the life of the Church purifies us, reminds us of our call to salvation, and makes us holy. What better feast to do this than the feast of Our Lord, who is our great King? This is an important point to remember, for Christ, especially through this feast, offers the Church an excellent remedy for the plague which now infests society, that is, the plague of secularism. Secularism leads to an indifference to religion, seeing it as nothing special. That is a great evil of our time, one in which this Feast of Our Lord, the King, seeks to put an end to. The lining up of this feast with Advent is also quite something. Advent is a season that points not just to Jesus humble first coming, but it also points to His Second Coming, which will be one of awe and grandeur. It will be the coming of the King in all His fullness and glory. These two events the feast of Christ the King and the season of Advent serve to remind us of who Jesus is and how we are to prepare for Him. This is something noted especially in the liturgy: the celebration of Christ the King is a very high mass to mark His glory, while the season of Advent is simpler to denote our longing and waiting for His return. With the liturgy in mind, I wanted to note how our liturgy here at St. Anthony s will be during this Advent season. Some of it is what the Church asks of us, while some of it will be things I thought would be fitting and beneficial to our worship during this Advent. The Entrance music for the mass will be quite different for the first two Sundays of Advent. Instead of singing an entrance hymn, the choir will chant the Entrance Antiphon proper to each mass. This will help us start Advent in the right mood. As Advent continues, we will go back to having an entrance hymn sung. For the Penitential Rite, instead of praying the Confiteor (i.e. the I Confess ), we will use Option B like we did last year. The text for this option can be found on page 4 in the new 2019 Pew Missal. As the Church calls for during this season, we will not pray the Gloria, keeping in mind the solemn character of this season and waiting for the Glory of Christ s birth. (However, we still sing the Alleluia) The Our Father, and its responses, will be recited instead of sung. However, we will go back to singing it during the Christmas season. Intention of Pope Francis for the month of November That the language of love and dialogue may always prevail over the language of conflict. For details, contact Sidney Bennett at PRAYER FOR PROTECTION DURING HURRICANE SEASON O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed Your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land, and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son on our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem, where a stormless eternity awaits us. Amen. [Composed by Most Rev. Maurice Schexnayder ( ),Second Bishop of Lafayette ( ) in 1957]
