6 October 2018 Saint James School News VIRTUE OF THE MONTH Saint James School has always been committed to growing young hearts and minds. Ingrained in the school s curriculum is the belief that education must nurture the whole child spiritually and morally, as well as intellectually. This year marks the implementation of a new program to encourage character development, an initiative called Virtue of the Month. Under the direction of Principal Bridget Zorger, a committee of five teachers met to select the virtues to be incorporated into this year s program. The first month of the school year was devoted to the virtue of courage; the focus for October is gratitude. The selected virtue is announced each month when the student body meets for the recitation of the rosary on the first or second Wednesday. In making the announcement, Mrs. Zorger reads a relevant passage from the Bible and gives examples of the ways in which the virtue can be practiced. During the month, students complete a writing assignment in which they define and exemplify what the virtue means to them. The teachers choose passages from these essays to read as part of the morning announcements. Very young children are asked to draw a picture illustrating the virtue, and these are displayed in the classroom. Throughout each month, bulletin board displays on the first and second floors will feature art work and Scriptural passages to illustrate the virtue. In addition to learning about the virtue, students are encouraged to practice it and make in part of their daily Two students from each homeroom were awarded a Medal of Courage certificate for exhibiting courage during the month of September. Each month, teachers in every classroom choose two students who exemplify the featured virtue. Their names are announced at the rosary assembly the following month, and each student so honored receives a certificate. WRITING IN CURSIVE In many schools, cursive writing is a lost art, crowded out of the curriculum by the demands of the Common Core. We re happy to say that such is not the case at Saint James. Starting in January of the second grade, students begin learning the slant, strokes and letter formation of the Zaner -Bloser handwriting program. In short daily lessons, they practice their newly-learned skill, and by the end of the year, they are turning in their writing assignments in cursive. For the benefit of transfer students, Mrs. Patricia Curry, retired Grade 2 teacher and assistant principal, conducts a clinic in cursive writing at the beginning of each school year. The ability to read and write in cursive gives students a tremendous advantage in this digital age. The process of forming letters by hand especially the connected letters of cursive penmanship activates the brain in ways that keyboarding does not. It fosters comprehension speed and writing fluency, and helps to overcome some of the effects of dyslexia. Our students will enjoy a distinct advantage in their later academic careers, when their ability to read cursive writing will place them among a vanishing breed, able to read the primary historical documents, such as the Declaration of Independence or the U.S. Constitution! Most second graders are unaware of the pedagogical advantages of learning to write in cursive. But they love learning the new grown-up style of writing. Now, they ll be able to read for themselves the notes from Grandma and perhaps even write her a note in return!

7 October 14, 2018 Novena to the Blessed Virgin Mary Each Monday at 7:10PM at Assumption Church a Novena will be held during exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. We will pray the Rosary and conclude with Benediction. (Please note: Adoration and Novena will not be held if Monday is a holiday.) Knights of Columbus Catholic Citizenship Essay Contest K of C Council 1155 is sponsoring this contest for all Manchester area Catholic students in grades 8-12 (parochial & public schools). The topic and a brief description are provided below. Topic: How does your family keep its Catholic faith in action? Faith in action is love, and love in action is service. By transforming that faith into living acts of love, we put ourselves in contact with God himself, with Jesus our Lord. Saint Mother Teresa Our Catholic faith is the starting point of all our actions. In ways both large and small, our families constantly rise to Christ s challenge. In an essay of words, reflect on how your family puts its Catholic faith in action, every day. This could be through daily prayers as a family, volunteering to help the less fortunate in your community, or even just reminding those in your life of how much they mean to you.
