Page 2 DIVINE WISDOM The Lord's message, through Moses, was to "take no revenge and cherish no grudge... love your neighbor as yourself" (Leviticus 19:18). We might think, "Great in theory, but not always realistic!" Then Jesus in today's Gospel goes even further. Take a slap in the face and then turn the other cheek? Treat enemies the same as friends? Again, we're tempted to think that those are nice ideals, but not very practical in the "real world." Paul echoes Jesus when he tells the Corinthians that what passes for human wisdom is absurdity to God. Divine wisdom casts sunshine on the good and the bad, showers rain on the honest and the dishonest--without distinction. Solidarity Prayer Vigil for Refugees and Immigrants Thursday February 23rd 8:00 PM The Catholic Center at UVM invites you to an evening of prayer and standing together in solidarity with the 65 million refugees and immigrants around the world. In a time of great uncertainty for those seeking refuge and peace within our borders we want to take a stand for what we believe. Come light a candle, say a prayer, write a message to the refugees in our community or send a letter to a politician. Ash Wednesday Almsgiving Collection There will be a special collection on Ash Wednesday to support Vermont Catholic Charities. This agency provides financial and emotional support to individuals and families throughout Vermont through the programs offered which include Counseling, Emergency Aid, Prison Ministry, Project Rachel, and Residential Care Homes. Envelopes will be available in the churches. Please know that every gift whatever the size makes a difference. Thank you for your generosity. Why Lent Join Josh Perry, Director of the Office of Worship, as he continues to unpack the liturgical year with his presentation Why Lent. Learn how Lent came to be a time of intense preparation for those being initiated into the church as well as a time of spiritual renewal for the faithful. We ll consider anew the traditional Lenten practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving as ways to make your Lenten observance more meaningful this year. Your generosity, efforts, and outstanding cooperation are very much appreciated. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION UPDATES ALL GRADES: Our coin drop fundraiser is underway. All donations will be given to Elizabeth Rensch to support her mission trip to the Dominican Republic. Our last weekend for students to bring in their contribution will be the weekend of February 18th and 19th. CLASS MASS: for Grades 3 & 4 on Saturday, March 11th at 4:00 PM. A pot luck dinner for the entire parish will be held after the Mass. CONFIRMATION RETREAT: Saturday, April 1st for any 10th graders who did not attend the fall retreat. Please see Jill for details. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In brushing up for "Catholic Jeopardy," it might help to know that there is only one feast on the calendar for a thing, rather than a person or mystery. It's for a chair: Saint Peter's chair in fact After the Resurrection, there can be no doubt that the disciples reserved a special place for Simon Peter in the upper room. Later, Peter became the bishop of Antioch in today's Syria, the place where we were first called "Christians." From there, he went to Rome, the center of the Empire, where it is said that Peter sat in a chair in the house of Priscilla and Aquila to instruct his flock. Jesus, in entrusting the keys of the Kingdom to Peter and his successors, entrusted his compassion and mercy to them, and charged them with pointing to the Kingdom of God. Compassion and mercy are to resonate through their teaching. Since the ancient sign of a teacher is the chair ("disciple" literally means one who sits at the feet of a teacher), Peter's chair has long been treasured. Today there is a symbolic shrine of Peter's chair above the main altar of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. This monument is the last work of Bernini, a huge bronze throne supported by four doctors of the Church: Augustine and Ambrose from the Western Church, and Chrysostom and Athanasius from the East.
