3 From the desk of Fr. John: A CONUNDRUM!! To be, or not to be this is the ques on? This is the well remembered line in Shakespeare s play Hamlet. The ques on I pondered this week regarding our parish Reconcilia on service on Monday evening at 7 pm was to do or not to do? Of course, most of you know immediately what the dilemma is: it is Monday Night Football in Sea le with the Seahawks hos ng the Minnesota Vikings with a Wild Card place on the line. I hate to be responsible for drawing a large number of the 12 th man crowd here when they might be needed at CenturyLink Field to cheer on the Hawks! If they were to lose this vital home game due our Reconcilia on service I might be driven out of town! On Thursday November 15 when I assisted at the Advent Reconcilia on service at St. Brendan in Bothell, the Seahawks were on Thursday night football and I gave their pastor a bad me for not avoiding this clash. You know what he is going to do when he has to come here on Monday night? It will be payback me when I will hear all about it! So why did I schedule our service for this Monday night? I didn t; it was already set by Fr. Steve and the Deanery when they set the dates of all the services last June. So I have no op on but to carry through. I am sure we have a significant number of parishioners who have li le or no interest in football and who will be very happy to get out of the house and away from the TV and get in their Advent confession. However, they might not be the big fish sinners!! THREE POSSIBILITIES. Our service at 7 pm will be just at half me in the game. I will make the introduc on brief and to the point and then there will be four neighboring priests coming in to help So you could possibly be following your lead blockers out the door by early third quarter. One poten al problem with this: what if you got back to watching the game and the Seahawks were not doing well and you star ng using language that you had just confessed and had to come back in for a follow up! Can you just imagine the return confession: Father it is close to an hour since my last confession and I just relapsed with my bad language!! This would be like being flagged for a penalty and it s now first and fi een this means that the priest has to increase the penance!! You get the idea. The second possibility would be for you to remember that the next closest services will be: St. Madeline Sophia on Thursday December 13; St. Jude Redmond on Monday December 17; St Theresa of Calcu a in Woodinville on Tuesday Dec 18 and Mary Queen of Peace Sammamish on Wed 19 th. The third op on is the regular scheduled confession mes here when I am available for the Sacrament: Saturdays from 3 4:30 pm and Wednesday mornings from 8 8:40 am. I write all this not just for fun but to say just how much I value this Sacrament and how important it is for our interior wellbeing to be forgiven and to be able to forgive. When we choose not to forgive we cheat ourselves of the joy of living. Prayer helps us to tap into God s assistance to forgive and reconcile our hurts. As I a priest, I delight in helping people through this Sacrament so that burdens can be li ed from the heart; as Jesus indicated.. what s hidden in the dark must come into the light for healing to take place. Take a step in Reconcilia on this Advent and experience the joy of being set free by the Lord s forgiveness and healing. Fr. John OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE - DECEMBER 12, 2018 In December of 1531, the na ve Mexican peasant Juan Diego was walking to a catechism class. A woman's voice called his name. He climbed the nearby hill to see a woman who "shone like the sun." She asked that he pe on the bishop for a church to be built on the spot, Tepeyac Hill. Twice the bishop denied Juan Diego, thinking him to be a fraud. Mary appeared to Juan Diego again. He asked her for a sign. There - in the heart of winter - he found a bed of rare Cas lian roses, a variety that would not be na ve to Mexico but that the Spanish bishop would surely recognize. Juan Diego gathered the flowers in his tunic. When he reached the bishop, he dropped the corners of his tunic so the roses fell to the ground. The bishop was transfixed. There on Juan Diego's tunic was an image of a woman robed with the stars, the moon under her feet, and the sun behind her. It was Mary! Juan Diego's tunic and the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe is preserved and s ll on display at the church Mary asked for almost 500 years ago. St. John Paul II declared Our Lady of Guadalupe the patroness of all of North, Central, and South America.

BRING THE HOMEBOUND TO MASS Catholic Community Services is starting a program to connect parishioners with fellow parishioners who are homebound and need a ride to Mass. They will hold an orientation session on Dec. 9th at in the St. Martin room of the parish center at Holy Family Catholic Church in Kirkland. Any parishioner who is in need of a ride, will go through CCS and be vetted. Volunteers will then be contacted to see if a match can be made. Which Masses and how often a volunteer can offer a ride is entirely at the discretion of the volunteer. Mileage payment is also available through CCS. DO YOU NEED HELP? 6 Administration & Stewardship CCS WEEK 2018 AT SACRED HEART This weekend, December 8-9, we will once again learn about how Catholic Community Services (CCS) and Catholic Housing Services (CHS) provides care for our poorest and most vulnerable neighbors on behalf of our local Church. Bill Hallerman, from CCS/CHS, will speak at all Masses. Your generosity to CCS Week directly supports programs and services provided in our area. NEW BOOKKEEPER/ACCOUNTANT HIRED Deacon Sam is pleased to announce that James Applegate, CPA has been hired as the new Bookkeeper/Accountant for Sacred Heart Parish and School. James is a native of Bellevue graduating from Newport High School, the University of Washington and Seattle University. He and his family are members of St. Madeleine Sophie Parish. James has an extensive background in public accounting working at first as staff accountant and then as accounting manager for two firms over the past 13 years. James father, Dennis, was the Pastoral Assistant for Administration at St. Monica Parish, Mercer Island, for several years. James will begin his orientation and training with Jeanine Kasprick on December 12. Jeanine will remain on staff as long as her health permits reducing her hours over time.
