3 From the desk of Fr. John: LENT: CATHOLIC SPRING TRAINING! KINDLE OUR HEARTS, O LORD. Sin is a tricky and uncomfortable concept these days. In the days of old, the clergy were disposed to preach about sin, hellfire and damna on. How much easier it is to give a litany of sins than to proclaim the life-giving mercy and forgiveness of the gospel message. Perhaps our re cence in these mes is a reac on against this rather overzealous preaching of the past. Or, could it be because members of the clergy even at some of the highest levels have been exposed and convicted as sinners? I hesitate to ask this ques on; when did you last hear the word sin men oned in a homily? Hopefully it was fairly recently and you were reminded by the priest or deacon or bishop at Mass that, as much as we like to avoid addressing it, sin is our biggest problem. And no ma er how hard we try to call it something else or even just ignore it, it remains a cold and sober fact of the human condi on. We are sinners and sinners do what sinners do best we sin. I would be good to read the First Le er of John to be reminded of what he said so soon a er the death and resurrec on of Jesus: if we say we have never sinned, we make Jesus a liar and his word finds no place in us. My li le ones, I am wri ng this to keep you from sin. But if anyone should sin, we have, in the presence of the Father, Jesus Christ, an intercessor who is just. He is an offering for our sins, and not for our sins only, but for those of the whole world 1 John 1: :2. What is sin? It is a fair ques on to ask. When we sin we fall short, we miss the mark the mark being the holiness and perfec on of God. Armed with this understanding we can see why St. Paul could say with authority and confidence; all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God Romans 3:23. And just to make sure that no one thought he was poin ng a finger at everybody else, he described himself as the worst of all sinners, calling himself a blasphemer and violent man; 1 Timothy 1:13. One problem we have had over the years is that, as a church, we have tended to iden fy sexual sin as the worst kind of sin. These sexual sins include fornica on (sex between unmarried people), adultery, homosexual sex, masturba on and the viewing of pornography. In contrast, sins such as greed, avarice, hypocrisy, glu ony, abuse of power, conceit and arrogance are not always understood as sinful or wrong or at least we tend to think of these as grey areas of sin. However, Jesus went out to the tax collectors, pros tutes and those on the margins of society while reserving the harshest rebuke for the Pharisees and other religious leaders of his day. You would have to think that he would have serious condemna on for the abuse that was covered up by our church leadership in our me. I believe that the Sacrament of Reconcilia on is as great a sacrament as it has ever been and as applicable and helpful in our me as it was from the me of Jesus. Clearly many who come to the Sacrament regularly believe it as well. It is obvious that this Sacrament was losing popularity even before the revela ons of sexual abuse among clergy but clearly these revela ons have greatly undermined people s belief in the Sacrament. I regret this is the case but I accept it and can t blame anyone for shying away. For these reasons I am going to make our Lenten Reconcilia on services for Lent general services with no other priests present. I will use Rite 3 which means General Absolu on. I will offer two services on Thursday April 4: a day me service from am and an evening service from 7-8 pm. I will con nue to be available for Confessions every Saturday a ernoon from 3-4:30 and on Wednesday mornings from 8-8:40 for those who would like to a end Confession. Further, anyone who needs Confession can call for an appointment at a different me in the church or in the office. I am very grateful to whichever of my predecessors installed glass doors in the Confessional so that a penitent can be visible while inside especially that our parents can see their children while they are in the Confessional. I welcome anyone with the heart of Jesus who wants to make a return to the Sacrament this Lent. Lord, you reserved the harshest words for the hidden sins of hypocrisy, pride, greed and legalism. You lead me to salva on through the grace of repentance. Melt my hard heart by the gentle grace of your mercy and forgiveness. Fr. John. Fr. 6 Administration & Stewardship CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES (CRS) ANNUAL COLLECTION Next weekend, March 30-31, the 4th Sunday of Lent, our parish takes up the annual Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Collec on. The theme this year is Help Jesus in Disguise. This collec on supports six Catholic agencies that touch more than 100 million lives around the world. The funds from the collec on help provide food to the hungry, support to displaced refugees, and Christ s love and respect to all people. How will you help Jesus in disguise?
