3 MAY 22, 2016 THE POPE CAUSES A STIR Our Holy Father Pope Francis is anything but boring and predictable. Take for example just last week when he was having a big meeting with religious sisters. A question came up about women deacons and the Holy Father indicated that he would consider establishing a commission to study the subject. This, of course, would not be the first time a study was made of the subject. The truth is that the Catholic Church has not determined whether or not it is possible to ordain women as deacons. The question is an open one--and I might add an interesting one. The same is not true of priestly ordination for women. On May 22, 1994 Pope John Paul II solemnly declared the following in Ordinatio Sacerdotalis: Although the teaching that priestly ordination is to be reserved to men alone has been preserved by the constant and universal Tradition of the Church and firmly taught by the Magisterium in its more recent documents, at the present time in some places it is nonetheless considered still open to debate, or the Church's judgment that women are not to be admitted to ordination is considered to have a merely disciplinary force. Wherefore, in order that all doubt may be removed regarding a matter of great importance, a matter which pertains to the Church's divine constitution itself, in virtue of my ministry of confirming the brethren (cf. Lk 22:32) I declare that the Church has no authority whatsoever to confer priestly ordination on women and that this judgment is to be definitively held by all the Church's faithful. Invoking an abundance of divine assistance upon you, venerable brothers, and upon all the faithful, I impart my apostolic blessing. This is considered settled teaching and is binding on all the faithful. The ordination of women as deacons is in another category. It may be freely discussed and debated within the Church. As a matter of fact, several years ago an article on this subject appeared in America Magazine by

4 Bishop Emil Wcela. As you can see, this is a subject that is very much up in the air. Bishop Murphy on his blog expressed reservations. He, like many scholars, does not think there is real evidence that the deaconesses mentioned in the New Testament were ordained sacramentally. (When I was in the seminary it was commonly taught that the deaconesses were baptismal helpers and assistants and were not ordained. The Pope himself indicated in this wide ranging discussion that he had learned the same thing.) The Holy Father quite rightly wants to give women a greater and more significant role in the life of the Church. From what I can see and have seen over the past almost fifty years, women play a tremendous part in the everyday life of the parish and that is where most people meet Christ and participate in the sacraments and the mission of the Church. Without them and their tremendous dedication much of the life of the Church would be crippled. Whether or not there will be women deacons or even if the Pope will actually form that commission, is far from certain. We shall see and, believe it or not, I will avoid any predictions. 8 LITURGY CORNER The last Corporal Work of Mercy is to Bury the Dead: No, you don t need to actually do that in today s environment, but support their families and pray for the deceased. Some suggestions include attending wakes - you really don t have to say much, just being there provides comfort for the living, and your prayers are for both the deceased and their families; really listen to the list of parishioners who have died recently and keep them in your prayers during the week; support or volunteer at a hospice; offer daily prayers for those with terminal illnesses and for those who have died; participate in a bereavement ministry such as the one offered by St. Aidan s; spend time with widows and widowers and include them in social activities; take friends and relatives to visit the cemetery; send Mass cards to families of those who have died; and a personal favorite, offer a prayer daily for the departed who have no one else to pray for them. ST. GEORGE'S PRAYER GARDEN Parishioner Kevin Parente, Jr. will be starting his Eagle Scout project this spring/summer. As a devoted altar server and parishioner, he decided to focus his project on something that will benefit the Parish of St. Aidan. It was pointed out to him that the small plot of land on the corner of Pembroke Street and Astor Place, near the convent, is overgrown and in need of renovation to turn it into a beautiful prayer garden. The landscaping will require many hours of hard work and materials like plants, bushes, stones, bricks, and cement. He is asking for donations to help fund the project. Even small donations will go a long way. If you can donate, please send a check (written to "BSA Troop 200") or cash to Kevin Parente, Jr. at 8 Atlanta Avenue, East Williston, NY He will also be available after the masses on May 22nd. The patron saint of scouting is St. George. We plan on calling the garden "St. George's Prayer Garden." Thank you! PEANUT BUTTER GANG Thank you everyone who volunteered to make peanut butter sandwiches at our last session. We made about 1,160 sandwiches and 99 wash-up kits. The Gang meets on the second Saturday of every month. Join us if you can.

9 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA How can this be so, it is really a miracle that almighty God performs; in Mt.28:20 Jesus said, I am with you always, until the end of the age. and the Eucharist fulfills His promise. Jesus gives a very clear teaching on the Eucharist in the Gospel of John; an important chapter to read is #6 from verse 22 to 71. Take a moment and count how many times Jesus says that He is the bread. He says it twelve times in the passage! And this is reality, four times in this teaching Jesus commands us to eat His flesh and drink His blood to have eternal life; that is how important and true the Eucharist is as the center of our Faith. Once the bread and wine is consecrated in the Mass, at the point when the Priest says, in the person of Christ, This is my Body, this is my Blood through the power of the Holy Spirit, the appearance of bread and wine remain the same, but the substance changes to Christ Himself. Jesus is totally present Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity in even the smallest crumb of bread or the tiniest drop of wine. When the Eucharist is preserved, Christ s presence remains in the Tabernacle or in Adoration, when the Body of Christ is exposed to be adored. What miracle God performs out of his love for us! St. Thomas Aquinas wrote in the Tantum Ergo s hymn..down in adoration falling, this great sacrament we hail..and that is how we shall receive this miracle If you want to know more about the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist, we have a great CD in our kiosk, The Body and Blood of Christ by Dr. Scott Hahn who gives us a greater understanding of our Church s teaching on the real presence and the significance of the Feast of Corpus Christi, (what by the way is celebrated next Sunday). This CD is an important CD to give to people who are away from the Church or someone who wants to became Catholic. It is also an excellent tool for catechesis. I urge you to pass it along.
