3 November 10, 2013 USELESS WORRY This year marks the 50 th anniversary of the death of the world famous author C.S. Lewis who has penned many a book. As a matter of fact children all over the world still read The Chronicles of Narnia and even adults enjoy them. Nevertheless, the one book of his that I would particularly call to your attention is The Screwtape Letters. It certainly is an odd title and has an unusual format. Screwtape is a senior devil who seeks to instruct Wormwood, a mere novice devil, in the art of leading a soul to hell. This book is well worth reading and illustrates in an entertaining way the cunning and deceitfulness of the devil. In future articles I will address some of the points made by Lewis and attempt to show how valuable they are to our current situation. Like Pope Francis, C.S. Lewis really knew the hearts of people. Pope Francis has the singular talent of speaking to the whole world in simple, direct language that everybody can understand. You need no theological special studies to get his point. It seems to me that the emerging themes of his papacy are mercy and love for the poor. These themes are repeated over and over again and show that he thoroughly knows the human heart and the problems that are faced by ordinary people. Last Sunday when the story of Zacchaeus was read in the Gospel the Pope reached out to despairing and hopeless sinners. Many times people are a victim of their own imaginations. They conjure up the idea of a God who is cold, vengeful and unforgiving and they wrongly think that their sins are so unique and exceptional and that their situation is so terrible that it can never be corrected. This is, of course, playing directly into the hands of the devil who wants above all to discourage people and make them completely broken hearted. The devil tells such people over and over again: There is no hope for you. You are beyond the mercy of God. This is absolutely the biggest lie that ever comes out of the mouth of the Father of Lies, Satan. Those who are victimized by the Devil and their own fears and misconceptions should

4 listen to the calming and reassuring words of the Holy Father. This is what he says: And I say to you: if you have a burden on your conscience, if you are ashamed of many things that you have done, stop for a moment, do not be afraid. Know that someone waits for you because he has never forgotten you; and this person is your Father, it is God who awaits you! Like Zacchaeus, climb up the tree of the desire to be forgiven; I assure you that you will not be disappointed. Jesus is merciful and never tires of forgiving us! Remember this well, this is how Jesus is. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald STEWARDSHIP COLLECTION 11/04/12 $29,051 11/03/13 $27,515 (-5.29%) ALL SAINTS DAY COLLECTION 11/01/12 $ 6,699 11/01/13 $ 8,348 (+24.6%) ARCHDIOCESE FOR THE MILITARY SERVICES COLLECTION 11/03/13 $ 4,076 This weekend s second collection is for Parish Social Ministry. Next weekend s second collection is for Hope of the Generation Uganda. Thank you for your kind and generous support of our parish! HOPE OF THE GENERATION UGANDA (HOGU) St. Aidan's parishioners have been supporting Hope of the Generation Uganda (HOGU) since Founder of HOGU and St. Aidan's alumni, Erin Lawless, will be giving a brief update on the progress HOGU has made at the end of each Mass on November 16th and 17th. With your support, Erin and HOGU have been able to reach hundreds of young people affected by poverty and HIV/AIDS with Health promotion messaging in the most rural areas of Uganda using creative education techniques. This year Erin will be fundraising specifically for the construction of HOGU's school. Over 250 students attend the school that is currently made out of wood scraps and cardboard material. The students, teachers and families have invested in a high quality education at the school and they now deserve a safer and more secure place for children to learn and grow. A second collection will be taken to help support this very special construction project. Please show your support in any way you can!

16 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA This week we have arrived at the end of the Year of Faith. It went by so quickly, started last October 2012 and officially ends on November 24th, the Solemnity of Christ the King. The goal of the Year of Faith, was and is, to reawaken the faith in Catholics, so we can be better witnesses to the love of Christ and His Church in our homes, workplaces and communities as Cardinal Wuerl announced last year. He also told us With hearts transformed by Christ and His Gospel, we can change our own lives, and change the world. As the Year of Faith draws to a close, the imperative of renewing and deepening our faith remain. One way to do that is to take steps to partake more often of the Sacraments, recitation of the Holy Rosary, prayers to Our Lady, the Angelus, regular attendance at Mass if possible during the week. In attending Mass we declare ourselves one body in Christ. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that the Eucharist is the center of the church s life and is directed toward the intimate union of the faithful with Christ. Our Pope Francis reminds us that because of a rapidly enveloping secularism people don t hear the truth and joy of our beliefs, he stresses the need for us to embrace and learn our faith, fortified by the sacraments and daily prayer we can take up the work of the New Evangelization and share our knowledge with others. He calls us to go out and bring Christ s love to those in need and become active in our Parishes. The Pope tells us.let us ask ourselves what steps we are taking to ensure that faith governs the whole of our existence..i am making this suggestion to you: Let us invoke the Holy Spirit every day, in this way the Holy Spirit will bring us close to Jesus Christ. We have in the kiosks two talks that are very inspirational, Pray Like a Saint, by Matthew Leonard, who defines and discusses the three stages of prayer. Prayer is the path to God, and Matthew lays out practical steps to achieve union with God, even in the midst of our busy world. Power in Prayer, by Sister Mary Gabriel, Novice Director for the Sisters of Life. Sister encourages all of us to rededicate ourselves to growing in relationship with Christ through a life of joyful prayer. Once more I ask you to see the wonderful CDs we have in our kiosks and take as many as you can afford, listen and then give them away! God will shower with blessings to all of you that advance His work of Salvation. Toti Conforti SUGGESTIONS FOR THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER The Catholic Church dedicates this month to the Holy Souls in Purgatory. Those faithful Christians who have died and gone before us but who still must atone for their sins. The time they spend in Purgatory cleanses them so that they may enter Heaven free from all effects of sin. Praying for the dead, especially those close to us, is an act of charity. Our prayers and sacrifices can be offered up to relieve their suffering. The holy souls are eager for the prayers of the faithful, St. Padre Pio tells us, we must empty Purgatory!! Masses for the deceased shorten their time in purgatory. While we know that the pains of purgatory will end and they would enter in Heaven, charity requires us to pray not only for our loved ones but for those souls who does not have someone to remember them. Share your reactions and feedback at pastoralcouncil@staidanparish.org or call (516) x9592. St. Aidan s Pastoral Council tries to be responsive to the needs of our parish.
