3 A Message from: September 16, 2018 December 30, 2018 Sister Mary Alyce Today, the Feast of the Holy Family, we focus our attention on the value of family in our lives. Family is a generic term that conjures up all sorts of memories, some good and some bad, from our own lived experiences. Certainly, we pray for healing for those whose families are not positive and life-giving. The story of twelve year-old Jesus being separated from His mother and father during festival time in Jerusalem caused great concern and worry to His parents, as it would to any parent, grandparent or adult with responsibility for supervision of a child. (Luke 2: 41-52) The human reaction of Mary to this childhood antic is not difficult for any of us to understand. Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety. (v. 48) The dialog between Jesus and His parents is also very plausible, although difficult to understand given Jesus Divine Mission, which He revealed to them at this time. (vs ) The line that always strikes me from this reading is and His mother kept all these things in her heart. (v.52) Isn t it like a mother to remember in love, all the important events in her child s life? And this very memory of Mary would come back to her thirty-three years later as he stood beneath the cross with her heart broken again as the centurion keeping guard uttered, Truly, this man was the Son of God. (Mark 15:39) Thank you to Christmas decorators, artists, musicians, liturgical ministers, Knights of Columbus, Environment Committee, maintenance staff, office staff and all who added to the beauty of the Christmas celebrations this past week. Our church looks beautiful, as it always does. The beauty of simplicity touches hearts, especially during this busy season when we tend to rush to do more and see more and eat more and. The lights in the outdoor garden area remind us of the Light of the World which brightens our lives one day at a time. This may be an especially dark time for some among us who have experienced loss during this past year. A smile, a hug, a phone call are all small ways of touching another s heart to bring light. Be the Light of Christ to others this coming year. The world will be a brighter place because of YOU. Since 2002 all dioceses of the United States, including the Diocese of Youngtown, have committed to creating Safe Environments for our children. Contained within the diocesan plan for Keeping our Children Safe, is a 2-hour in-service training which has been in place for several years. Saint Luke is offering an in-service for any adult working or volunteering with children in any capacity in any diocesan sponsored ministry (schools, churches, child care centers, etc.). It will be held in the MMR on Sunday, January 6 at 11:15 a.m. following the 10:00 a.m. mass. There is no charge for the training. Participants must register online before January 6 on the Diocese of Youngstown website (www. doy.org click on Virtus online/ Find a session at the bottom of the webpage/diocese of Youngstown/ Saint Luke). Tracey Smrek is a certified trainer and will be presenting this program at Saint Luke Church. Feel free to invite friends from other parishes to this training. Until next time. Sister Mary Alyce HAPPY NEW YEAR!

(Parishioners of Saint Luke) THE PARISH OFFICE IS CLOSED TUESDAY KEEPING THE PARISH DIRECTORY CUR- RENT: As you know we are currently updating our parish data base. If you are a registered parishioner and have a change of address or phone number, if your adult children have moved out on their own or relocated, or if you are moving out of the parish, please notify the parish office at or saintlukes@zoominternet.net We have noticed that many families still have children who have moved away listed. Please help us keep the records current. Thank you Contribution Statements are available upon request. Please call Lisa at the parish office if you need your statement. LUKE S LUCKY LOTTO: The final winners of the Luke s Lucky Lotto will be listed in next week s bulletin. It has been decided that the Luke s Lucky Lotto game will be discontinued. Thank you to all who supported LLL over the past several years.

5 STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT: See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. (1 John 3:1) During this season of giving, let us remember the most important gift we have received being children of God. As God s children, it s important that we express our love for others as well. Tell your spouse, children and other family members and friends that you love them, frequently. VOCATIONS: The Holy Family is for us the model for all families. Parents are the first teachers of the faith. As parents, have you shown by word and example the way to follow Christ? Have you encouraged your children to consider a vocation to the priesthood or religious life? For more information contact Fr. Call Christopher Luoni (330) , or by cluoni@youngstowndiocese.org. For all Catholic families, that they will support the grace of each child s vocation and prayerfully encourage their children to consider being a priest, religious sister or brother, we pray to the Lord. Something to think about this week Every friend was once a stranger. Anonymous WOULD YOU LIKE TO WRITE ONE LESS CHECK MONTHLY? Did you know you can make your weekly or monthly donation without writing a check? 1. Visit the parish website at and click on the WeShare link. or go directly to 2. Parish Mission Statement We are members of Saint Luke Parish, a Roman Catholic Christian Community of Faith within the Diocese of Youngstown. We are deeply rooted in both Scripture and Tradition. Born in Baptism and sustained by the celebration of the Eucharist, we embrace our life in Christ through prayer and sacrament, service and outreach, proclamation of the Word and formation in faith. Guided by the Holy Spirit and motivated by our love of God and of all people, we are both sign and an instrument of the Kingdom of Promise. Our unique blessing and gift is that we are a parish family which creates a warm and welcoming worship environment and participates fully in the planning and celebration of the Liturgy.
