3 Mar 18, Page 3 FATHER ANTHONY S FAITH FORMATION CORNER The Paschal Mystery Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it produces much fruit These words of Jesus from St. John s Gospel for this Sunday (12:24) very well sum up the Paschal Mystery, which is at the heart of our Christian faith and spirituality. In fact all liturgical celebrations revolve around this mystery. Essentially the paschal mystery is about Christ: his dying, his rising to new life, and the sending of the Spirit. The spiritual author Ronald Rolheiser, in his book The Holy Longing, discusses the paschal mystery in details. I would like to borrow Fr. Rolheiser s ideas on this subject in this reflection. In order to experience resurrection, we all have to die. However there is also a good distinction between terminal death and paschal death; between resuscitated life and resurrected life. Terminal death ends all life s possibilities: as in the case of a person dying in old age, in an accident, or in illness. Paschal death is real death too; but while ending one form of life, it gives the person the possibility to experience a more profound form of life. Likewise, resuscitated life refers to the restoration of an ill person to life; while resurrected life goes beyond that it is the reception of a radically new life. Lazarus experienced the resuscitated life; while Jesus, resurrected life. Obviously the paschal mystery involves paschal death and resurrected life. In a few distinct moments within the paschal cycle, one can find Good Friday, Easter Sunday, the 40-day period leading to Ascension, Ascension, and finally Pentecost. This concrete example from Fr. Rolheiser can very well illustrate the pattern of the paschal mystery: The story is about a forty-seven-year old Canadian man who worked in a grocery store. Since childhood he dreamed of becoming a hockey superstar. He was a good player himself in his later years; but at age twenty two, he eventually realized that he was not good enough to play in the pro. Life went on: he got married and had four beautiful children, having a decent job at the store. Overall life was good for him. But somehow he was not happy because he was still living that impossible dream One Sunday at mass, his daughter was the reader. And later the priest talked about how the body of Jesus went up into heaven. That was an eye-opening moment for him: he realized that he had to let go of his long-time dream and let it ascend like the body of Jesus; and that he was miserable all this time because he still tried to cling on to his dream. Examining this man s story in terms of the paschal mystery, we see that he had experienced Good Friday (or paschal death) at age twenty two: the death of his dream. Like the body of Jesus, that dream was crucified. But not all was lost. He also experienced his Easter Sunday: a good marriage/family and a decent job. What he needed was to undergo his Ascension and Pentecost. It took him twenty five years to finally be able to let go of the dream. Once he was able to let his dream ascend, like the body of Jesus, into heaven, he finally was able to receive new life. That man has undergone the paschal mystery: dying, rising, and receiving the new spirit We are constantly undergoing changes in life. We die a thousand deaths: death of our youth and good looks, death of our wholeness, death of a relationship, death of a dream, death of a certain conception, etc. While it is a real temptation to cling on to the old reality, what we need to do is to let go; to let the old thing ascend, just like to the body of Jesus. It may not be an easy task: the Canadian man in the story above needed a good twenty five years to let go of his dream! Whatever it is, we know that just like that grain of wheat, unless we die and die again, we cannot experience new life. Esta nueva alianza, que Jeremías y los profetas habían anticipado, no sería grabada en piedra ni escrita en papel, sino que se escribiría en el corazón, para que pudiéramos conocer a Dios íntimamente. La salvación no está en obedecer muchos preceptos, sino en el amor de Dios, que está vivo y es real en nuestro corazón gracias al sacrificio de Cristo. Nuestra Eucaristía es la promesa del Cristo que vive dentro nuestro y de nuestra respuesta de alabanza y agradecimiento a Dios por su misericordia, amor y bondad al perdonar nuestros pecados y limpiarnos el corazón de todo mal. Dios extiende esta invitación a la intimidad al ofrecernos la oportunidad de que nuestro sufrimiento se transforme en el amor perfecto del Salvador, que siempre nos amó. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE En Latinoamérica, como en muchas partes del mundo, hay una horrible e impresionante pobreza. Enfrentado con la miseria humana, el cristiano puede responder con resignación "Yo no soy nadie, qué puedo hacer yo? Nada." o puede responder con obras de caridad ayudando uno por uno a los pobres y necesitados. Esta virtud, es el pilar más importante de la conversión. Porque en ella imitamos a Jesucristo que vino no a condenar al mundo sino a salvarlo. Sin la caridad nuestros ayunos son dietas y nuestras oraciones son palabras necias. La caridad es una virtud cristiana, porque Dios es el mejor ejemplo de lo que es la caridad. La caridad no es limosna, es amor y justicia, es salud y salvación; es cumplir con el mandamiento de amarnos los unos a los otros en un mundo donde la mayoría son pobres y desamparados. La caridad es dar al necesitado algo que uno aun necesite, es obrar por cambios sociales que promuevan la dignidad humana y el bienestar económico de todos. La caridad es amor y Dios es amor; vivamos en ese amor.
