3 Aug 13, Page 3 Fr. Anthony s Faith Formation Corner When is a Solemnity a Holy Day of Obligation? This week I want to examine the question concerning our holy days of obligation, as we approach the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary, August 15. What I am about to write only pertains to the Church in the USA There are certain SOLEMNI- TIES that are also holy days of obligation: the Assumption, All-Saints (November 1), the Immaculate Conception of Mary (December 8), and of course, Christmas. We may also add the Solemnity of Mary Mother of God on January 1, but among many dioceses on the West Coast, it is NOT a holy day of obligation in other dioceses in the country and for the Universal Church, it IS obligatory. And Christmas is ALWAYS a holy day of obligation no matter what day of the week it falls on NO EXCEPTION. Here in the US, if one of the above-mentioned feasts falls on either a Saturday or a Monday, the obligation is LIFTED; otherwise, the obligation holds. So last year in 2016, the Assumption fell on a Monday: thus, it was NOT obligatory. I suppose that the US bishops want the faithful to focus primarily on the Sunday celebration of the Lord s Paschal Mystery. So if a solemnity falls too close to a Sunday (Saturday or Monday), it is not a holy day of obligation. The same could be said of All-Saints day. If All- Saints or the Assumption both of which are in the season of Ordinary Time falls right on a Sunday, the Church would celebrate it right on that Sunday as the main liturgy. However, the Immaculate Conception of Mary is a little bit different. Since the Immaculate Conception is the patroness of the whole country, it is always a holy day of obligation no matter what day of the week it falls on with this ONE EXCEPTION. Since it is also in the season of Advent: if it happens to fall on a Sunday, we CANNOT celebrate it right on Sunday, because the Sundays of Advent have their own important liturgical meaning, and they take precedence over any feast or solemnity. In the case that the Immaculate Conception falls on a Sunday, it has to be transferred either to the Saturday before or the Monday after. I know that it can be a little bit confusing, but I hope the Catholic faithful will have a better understanding of the holy days of obligation. With the rules set above: is the Assumption of Mary this year, August 15 on a Tuesday, a holy day of obligation? The answer is YES. The faithful are expected to attend either the Vigil Mass (Monday evening) or the Mass during the day (any time on Tuesday). Below is our St. Barbara Mass schedule for the Assumption. "Because God gets lonely for his people" was the reply. There is some resonance with this wisdom in today's Gospel, as Jesus makes his disciples get into a boat without him and goes off alone while they venture into stormy waters. Of course, neither Jews nor Christians believe that the Almighty plays this sort of whimsical game with them, but there is some truth in the statement that we don't turn to God for saving help until we're in a bind. Peter's role today, as it is throughout the New Testament, is to be a sign or to represent each member of the church and the whole church. Our story is the tale told about Peter's faith today. What can bolster our faith is that even when Christ calls us to face bravely the tempests of life, if we are walking through them with our eyes fixed on him in faith, we have nothing to fear. Even when we falter or sink, simply crying "Lord, save me!" is enough to help us know the steady grasp of God's hand. Then, sheltered inside the walls of faith, the storms we endure lose their power over us. Mời Bạn: Trong đời sống bạn không tránh khỏi những lúc lo âu: những cám dỗ, đau ốm bệnh tật, nguy cơ mất đức tin, mất việc làm, thất bại,.. Khi chạm trán với bão tố thử thách như thế, ta không tránh được nỗi lo lâu sơ sệt. Nhưng điều quan trọng là ta không được phép để cho nỗi sợ làm tê liệt chúng ta, làm cho ta không còn ý chí phấn đấu, nhất là ngã lòng trông cậy, đánh mất niềm tin nơi Thiên Chúa. Hãy luôn tin Chúa đang ở gần bên ta. Chúa không bỏ rơi ta. Những lúc gặp giông bão trong đời là cơ hội để cho ta được trưởng thành trong đức tin.

A medida que nos acercamos a la solemnidad de la Asunción de la Santísima Virgen María, 15 de agosto, quiero estudiar este asunto de los "días santos de obligación". Lo que escribo sólo pertenece a la Iglesia en los EE.UU. Ciertas SOLEMNI- TIES que también son días santos de obligación: la Asunción, Todos los Santos (1 de noviembre), la Inmaculada Concepción de Santa María (8 de diciembre) y, por supuesto, Navidad. También podemos agregar la Solemnidad de María Madre de Dios, el 1 de enero; pero, entre muchas diócesis de la costa oeste, NO es un día sagrado de obligación. En otras diócesis del país y para la Iglesia Universal es obligatorio. Y la Navidad es SIEMPRE un día sagrado de obligación sin importar el día de la semana en que caiga - SIN EXCEP- CIÓN. Aquí en los EE.UU., si una de las fiestas mencionadas cae en un sábado o un lunes, la obligación es indultada; De lo contrario, la obligación se cumple. Así que el año pasado en 2016, la Asunción cayó en un lunes: por lo tanto, NO era obligatorio. Supongo que los obispos de Estados Unidos quieren que los fieles se centren principalmente en la celebración dominical del misterio pascual del Señor. Puesto que es también en la época del Adviento: si suele caer en un domingo, no podemos celebrarlo justo el domingo, porque los domingos de Adviento tienen su propio significado litúrgico importante, y tienen precedencia sobre cualquier fiesta o solemnidad. En el caso de que la Inmaculada Concepción caiga en domingo, tiene que ser transferida al sábado anterior o al lunes siguiente. Sé que puede ser un poco confuso, pero espero que los fieles católicos tengan una mejor comprensión de los días santos de la obligación. Con las reglas establecidas que traté de explicar anteriormente: Es la Asunción de la Virgen María este año, 15 de agosto en un martes, un día sagrado de obligación? La respuesta es sí. Se espera que los fieles asistan a la Misa de la Vigilia (lunes por la noche) o a la Misa del día (a cualquier hora del martes).
