3 Sept 11, Page 3 Fr. Anthony s Faith Formation Corner The Father Who Had TwoSons (Luke 15) Perhaps the most famous of Jesus stories/parables can be found in Luke 15. We usually call it the Parable of the Prodigal Son. However, Jesus begins the story: A man had two sons So it is really more about the father than any of his sons. A closer look at the different characters in the story may help us shed more light on the nature of God and our spiritual life First of all, the Prodigal Son: in the context of Jesus preaching, this son represents the disreputable people of Jesus time namely tax collectors and sinners. He is also symbolic of all of us who, at one time or another, have been far away from the Father s house. In our spiritual life we can be very childish: demanding for what we think belongs to us ( give me my share ) before knowing how to form a good relationship with God our Father. Like this son, our conversion can only happen once we come to terms with ourselves: coming to our senses. And that takes some humility. Secondly, the Father: of course he represents God. He is truly merciful and forgiving. When his prodigal son was still a long way off, he exultantly ran out to him to welcome him home: even before the son had a chance to say sorry. This reminds us that God loves us even while we were still sinners, mired in our helplessness; even before we have a chance to say to him: Father I have sinned against heaven and against you. Also, we are reminded that not only that we are a pilgrim people, but that God is a pilgrim God in search of his people, like the Father in search of his wayward son or the Shepherd looking for his lost sheep Thirdly, the Elder Son: he has never been away from the Father s house. All these years he has been faithful in service to his Father. Yet somehow his heart has been heavy with bitterness and anger. Obviously he represents the self-sufficient people (i.e., Pharisees) who are so sure of their self-righteousness and look down on everyone else. This son never left home, but he is equally far from home as is his younger brother. In our spiritual life, we can be equally far from the Father s house through sin and infidelity as through bitterness of heart In the end, readers of this parable may ask about what might have happened next in the story: what became of the prodigal son, or did the older son also come to his senses? But those questions are irrelevant, because the story is really about the Father who had two sons! 5 CHÚA NHẬT TUẦN 24 TN C Lc 15,1-32 CHIÊM NGẮM LÒNG THƯƠNG XÓT Đức Giê-su nói: Trên trời ai nấy sẽ vui mừng, vì một người tội lỗi ăn năn sám hối. (Lc 15,10) Suy niệm: Trong bối cảnh của Năm Thánh Lòng Thương Xót, ba dụ ngôn của Tin Mừng hôm nay như một chùm ánh sáng làm nổi bật hình ảnh ba chiều của Lòng Thương Xót. 1. Niềm mong ước của Lòng Thương Xót là không để mất một ai trong những tạo vật mà Thiên Chúa đã dựng nên giống hình ảnh Ngài, cho dù nó có nhỏ bé mấy đi nữa. 2. Lòng Thương Xót chứa đựng một quyền năng vô biên thúc đẩy Chúa ra đi tìm kiếm cho bằng được những người tội lỗi, lạc xa tình Chúa để đưa họ trở về với Ngài. 3. Lòng Thương Xót hoá thành Niềm Vui viên mãn khi những người con cái Chúa đã chết mà nay lại sống, đã mất mà nay lại tìm thấy. Mời Bạn: Lòng Thương Xót của Chúa tuôn tràn lai láng trên chúng ta để rồi chúng ta lại trao ban lòng thương xót ấy cho anh chị em của mình. Mời bạn chiêm ngắm Đức Ki-tô chịu đóng đinh là dung nhan Lòng Thương Xót để mô phỏng, đồng hoá những nét thương xót ấy trong tâm hồn của bạn. Chia sẻ: Tính vô cảm đã tiêm nhiễm vào lối sống Kitô hữu ngày nay như thế nào? Bạn cho một ví dụ chứng minh. Sống Lời Chúa: Mỗi ngày khắc hoạ vào tâm hồn mình một nét thương xót của Đức Ki-tô bằng cách thực hiện ba điều tâm niệm này: - luôn muốn điều tốt đẹp nhất cho tha nhân; - sống bao dung nhẫn nại; - và tha thứ không giới hạn. Cầu nguyện: Lạy Chúa Ki-tô là gương mặt hữu hình của Chúa Cha vô hình, Đấng biểu lộ quyền năng của Ngài bằng sự tha thứ và lòng thương xót.
