3 Oct 15, Page 3 FATHER ANTHONY S FAITH FORMATION CORNER Matthew 22:1-14: The Wedding Feast Jesus presents yet another parable about the Kingdom of heaven: that of the wedding feast. In the story, those who were invited to the banquet but did not come represent certain religious authorities in the Jewish circle, namely the chief priests and the Pharisees. The servants sent by the King to give out the invitations represent the prophets of Israel: not only were their messages unheeded, some of them even died as a result. Then the King became angry and sent his troops to destroy those murderers and burned their city, (Mt 22:7) This sentence in the parable most definitely refers to the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple by the Romans in 70 A.D. In retrospect, Matthew s Gospel was written in the 80 s, at least a decade after that terrible event, and one or two generations after the historical Jesus. [Now, I invite the readers of my column NOT to overreact when I say this: that line (22:7) might NOT have come from the mouth of the historical Jesus, but might have been put into his mouth by the evangelist. The one who wrote the Gospel was not so much interested in every word that came from the mouth of the earthly Jesus. Rather, he was more concerned with what pertained to his own community to whom he wrote this Gospel. It was a community in transition, made up both of Jewish and Gentile Christians. The Jewish Christians had been traumatized by the destruction of the Temple. They were confused: were they a sect with Judaism? What did it mean to be a Christian of Jewish origin? And what about the fate of the Gentile Christians?, etc ] Given this context, the wedding feast represents salvation. After the initial rejection by the first guests invited, the wedding invitation was extended to ALL people: good and bad alike (Mt 22:10) that is, the likes of tax collectors and Gentiles. But when the King saw a man at the feast without a wedding garment, he kicked him out In biblical terms, the garment symbolizes a life of conversion. Once the man accepted the wedding invitation, he should have put on the wedding garment. In other words, he should have undergone some sort of conversion. That he was without a garment means that he accepted God s call, but did nothing to change his life. In the end, this parable warns us of the dire consequences of accepting the invitation, but doing nothing except showing up. The story serves as a vivid reminder for all Christians today: if we have put on Christ, are we willing to take off the old garment and put on the new one? Sometimes we are not ready for that. Just one example: Vietnamese Catholics, while enthusiastically having embraced Christ, are still very much into superstitions and fortunetelling and the like We can always learn from the man: admission into the banquet is no assurance of staying there a proper response is also needed! 5 Oct 15, Page 5 COÄNG ÑOAØN THAÙNH GIUSE 15 Tháng Mười Người Ðàn Bà "Rất Ðàn Bà" Hôm nay là ngày kính nhớ thánh nữ Têrêxa Avila. Vị nữ tiến sĩ hội thánh này đã sống trong một giai đoạn có nhiều xáo trộn nhất đối với Giáo Hội. Thánh nữ chào đời khi cuộc cải cách của người Tin Lành bắt đầu và qua đời khi Công Ðông Trento vừa chấm dứt. Ngài đã được Thiên Chúa ban cho Giáo Hội như một đóa hoa đẹp đẽ nhất giữa những gai góc đang ụp phủ trên Giáo Hội. Têrêxa Avila có nhiều năng khiếu, đảm đang, đa tình... Têrêxa lại là một người đàn bà "rất đàn bà". Thế nhưng nơi người đàn bà này, người ta thấy có nhiều tương phản: thông minh nhưng lại thực tế; biết nhiều nhưng không xa vời với kinh nghiệm sống; thần bí nhưng lại đầy nghị lực để trở thành một nhà cải cách. Têrêxa là một người đàn bà hoàn toàn sống cho Chúa, nghĩa là một người đàn bà cầu nguyện, kỷ luật và biết cảm thông. Trái tim của Têrêxa hoàn toàn thuộc về Chúa. Ðã thách thức tất cả mọi chống đối của người cha để gia nhập dòng kín, Têrêxa cũng tiếp tục đương đầu với không biết bao nhiêu chống đối khác khi muốn cải tổ dòng kín. Người đàn bà yếu đuối này chỉ còn một nơi nương tựa duy nhất: đó là Thiên Chúa. Là một người sống cho Chúa hoàn toàn, Têrêxa cũng hoàn toàn sống cho người khác. Canh tân cuộc sống của mình, Têrêxa cũng không ngừng đi khắp đó đây để giúp người khác canh tân cuộc sống. Hiện nay, người ta nói đến rất nhiều thứ giải phóng, trong đó có giải phóng người phụ nữ. Có lẽ tất cả những ai đang tranh đấu cho nữ quyền nên nhìn vào mẫu gương của thánh nữ Têrêxa Avila. Một người đàn bà đã có thể thực hiện được nhiều việc vĩ đại, nhưng bản chất đàn bà vẫn không hề thay đổi trong con người ấy. Phải chăng người đàn bà có thể đóng trọn vai trò của họ trong Giáo Hội và trong xã hội khi họ biết trung thành với ơn gọi cao cả mà Thiên Chúa đã trao ban qua nữ tính của họ! Trước mặt Chúa, mỗi người chúng ta đều có một chỗ đứng. Không có chỗ đứng nào cao trọng hơn chỗ đứng khác. Hạnh phúc của chúng ta tùy thuộc ở sự đáp trả của chúng ta đối với tiếng gọi của Chúa. El salmo responsorial continúa pintando el cuadro de un lugar donde sólo florecen la bondad y la generosidad. Estas lecturas describen el banquete celestial, al que Dios nos llama mediante el bautismo y continúa llamándonos a lo largo de nuestra vida. Respondamos a la invitación de Dios y vivamos nuestra vida conforme a los valores del Evangelio para que un día seamos bienvenidos a la mesa del banquete en el Reino. Él fue sacerdote en Taos, Nuevo México cuando era territorio español, luego mexicano y finalmente cuando pasa a manos de EE. UU. Durante la época española y mexicana Antonio estableció escuelas para niños y niñas y fundó un seminario para preparar un clero nativo. En 1830 empezó a imprimir libros y estableció el primer periódico Nuevo Mexicano. De esta manera estableció Taos como un centro de educación. En 1851 llegaron los representantes del gobierno estadounidense con la intención de "americanizar" a los nuevos mexicanos prohibiéndoles sus tradiciones declarando que eran ignorantes y supersticiosas. Antonio José contradijo este movimiento convirtiendo su seminario en una escuela de leyes. Decía que el gobierno de EE. UU es un burro que debe ser montado por abogados.
