3 May Page 3 FATHER ANTHONY S FAITH FORMATION CORNER The Meaning of Pentecost in Light of the Paschal Mystery All our liturgical celebrations revolve around the paschal mystery, which is the central mystery of our Christian faith. In a word, it is about the death and resurrection of Jesus. In his book The Holy Longing, Canadian spiritual author Ronald Rolheiser discusses at great length the feasts of the Ascension and Pentecost in the context of the paschal mystery. On this Solemnity of Pentecost, I would like to borrow some ideas from Fr. Rolheiser for our reflection In a few distinct moments within the paschal cycle, one can find Good Friday, Easter Sunday, the 40-day period leading to Ascension, Ascension, and finally Pentecost. This concrete story from Fr. Rolheiser can very well illustrate the pattern of the paschal mystery. The story is about a woman at age forty-nine. From the outside, everybody would think she is a happy soul: she is attractive and intelligent, has a good family and career, etc. But those who really know her realize that she is deeply wounded. And her presence around others at times causes a great deal of unease It happened that at age nine, she was sexually abused by her alcoholic father. Her life seemed to have ended by then. But no, life went on. She went on to have a good career as an artist and got married with a good family. However, she was not able to let go of what happened. As she got older, the anger inside her became much more cancerous. When we examine this story, we can see that this woman has experienced Good Friday at age nine: the loss of her wholeness. Like the body of Jesus, it was crucified to the cross and was lost for good. But not all was lost. There was still a lot of life in her: her career, family, artistic talent, physical health, etc. We can see that in a sense, all that was her Easter Sunday. What she needed was to undergo the Ascension to grieve what has died and to let it go eventually Through the help of another woman who has also been abused, she underwent grief therapy. In one of the healing sessions that included professionals from different groups a priest, doctor, psychiatrist, and a nurse someone told her: Jesus only gave his disciples forty days to grieve and to adjust, but he has given you forty years already. It is time to let go. That really hit her. And she was able to find peace and happiness again when she eventually let that pain (the death of her wholeness) ascend like the body of Jesus. Finally she devoted her free time to help others who have been abused. That was her Pentecost! We are constantly undergoing changes in life. We die a thousand deaths: death of our youth and good looks, death of our wholeness, death of a relationship, death of a dream, death of a certain conception, etc. Like Mary Magdalene and like the two disciples on the road to Emmaus who did not recognize the risen Lord though he had died only a few days ago (because they were still clinging on to his former self/reality so much so that they were not able to recognize his new/exalted reality), we tend to cling on to what was lost whether it be a dream or whatever and find it difficult to accept the current reality. What we need to do is to let go; to let the old thing ascend, just like to the body of Jesus. It may not be an easy task: the woman in the story above needed a good forty years to let go of her childhood pain and finally achieve her Ascension and Pentecost! Whatever it is, we can only experience new life if we are willing to die and die again. Together we are united in the Catholic Faith by supporting many ministries and services that help the needy in our parish and throughout the diocese. We are asking each parishioner to participate by making a commitment to our annual Pastoral Services Appeal. If you have not yet made your pledge, PSA envelopes are available at the shelves by the Church entrances; please fill out your pledge/donation and drop in the collection basket at Mass, or you can also bring them to the Parish Office during the office hours. Như thế, để tin tức Chúa chịu chết và sống lại có sức hấp dẫn và thuyết phục thì người loan báo phải được Chúa Thánh Thần tác động; tin tức ấy không phải là một kiến thức đơn thuần mà phải là một niềm xác tín có sức hoán cải cuộc sống ở đời này mà và hơn nữa đem lại sự sống vĩnh cửu đời sau; chính vì thế, thông tin Chúa Kitô đã phục sinh là một thứ tin tức mà người loan truyền dám hy sinh cả mạng sống để bảo vệ, bởi vì đó là chính Tin Mừng. El Evangelio según san Juan nos recuerda que Jesús ha enviado a todos sus discípulos para que compartan su perdón y paz, por el poder del Espíritu Santo. Esto puede ser debido a los misioneros franciscanos que fundaron la Iglesia en América durante el siglo XVI. Probablemente sin conocer su origen estos llegaron con ideas milenaristas de un abad cisterciense llamado Joaquín de Fiore. Este monje había profetizado que estaba por llegar una época del Espíritu Santo en la cual se viviría por fin una utopía o sea el Reino de Dios. Muchos de los primeros franciscanos adoptaron sus ideas pero lamentablemente el joaquinismo, poco a poco, se transformó en herejía por su extremada crítica a los Sacramentos y la jerarquía. Al pasar de casi 3 siglos los frailes franciscanos que llegaron a nuestro continente vinieron con la idea de inaugurar la Iglesia del Espíritu Santo, la cual reformaría los errores y las debilidades de la vieja Iglesia Europea. Esta Iglesia también sería la que defendería al nativo y el mestizo de los abusos del Conquistador. Este sueño de utopía, se quedó en sueño pero, es un sueño que continua en el pueblo latino y su devoción al Espíritu Santo de la Santísima Trinidad. --Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM
