3 June 11, Page 3 Fr. Anthony s Faith Formation Corner The Holy Trinity: The Mystery of God s Love The doctrine of the Most Holy Trinity is the greatest mystery of the Christian faith. It is the mystery of the one God in three Persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Attempts have been made over the centuries to shed light on this, but it will forever remain a mystery. This brings us back to the basic point of all Christian theology: whatever we speak of God, no matter how well spoken and articulated, will always fall short of the ultimate mystery of God. We realize that we can only speak of God in human language because we do not have access to God s language: medieval people called this concept analogical language that we can only talk about God analogically. And yet, human language, as limited and defective as it is, is the only language that we have when speaking about God, or just about anything. While we can never speak adequately about God, it does not mean that we cannot speak of God intelligibly, or that we cannot know God or have a relationship with him. On this Feast of the Holy Trinity, I would like to examine the relational aspect of the one Godhead: the relation of God to all creatures. Catholics differ from Protestants a great deal when it comes to the question of the relationship between God and his creatures. The traditional Protestant approach is characterized by a strong emphasis on God s total and absolute otherness. The famous Swiss Protestant theologian Karl Barth (d. 1968) would speak of the infinite qualitative distinction between God and humanity, so much so that God can only be made known paradoxically as the deus absconditus (the hidden God). That is to say: God is the totally/wholly other. There is an infinite gap between God and the created realm. In this sense, it is understandable that Protestants in general do not honor the Blessed Mother and the saints as Catholics do although a few Protestants do actually have devotions to Mary. How about the Catholic approach to the same question? We acknowledge much merit in the classical Protestant position. That infinite qualitative distinction still holds. And so, as much as we hold the saints in high regard, we still have to remember that they are mere creatures. However, Catholics also look at things differently. We say that the beauty of God can be reflected in the beauty of creation. From the book of Genesis, we learn that God created everything and God saw how good it was. Most importantly, God created humanity in his own image and likeness. Even though that image has been marred by sin, it was never completely destroyed. Therefore, one can see that there is a close connection between God and his creatures despite whatever infinite gap there may be. For Catholics, creation does not lead us away from, but toward, God. And that is why our veneration of the Blessed Mother and the saints, along with our use of sacramentals such as holy water and images and statues, do not constitute idolatry. Rather, all these are means by which we can feel more connected to the Creator through what he has created. The Gospel for the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity this year offers us the famous line: God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that those who believe in him may not perish but may have eternal life, (John 3:16). Today we are reminded of this love. We are also reminded of our own need to thirst and to long for God. This longing can be expressed most beautifully by St. Augustine in his autobiography The Confessions: Oh God you have made us for yourself and our heart is restless until it rests in you. La ciencia no ha podido resolver el misterio de cómo el universo surgió ni explicar exactamente qué es lo que continúa dándole energía creadora y diseño magistral. Ninguna religión afirma que ha encontrado las palabras para nombrar plenamente el misterio inefable de Dios, ya que no importa qué nombre usemos, Dios siempre transciende nuestra limitada capacidad de comprensión. Dios es un misterio en el que se cree y que no se conoce. Y sin embargo, nosotros los cristianos creemos que el nombre que usamos para Dios es el que mejor expresa ese misterio inexpresable: Dios es la Santísima Trinidad de tres personas unidas en una comunión de amor, que se vierte en amor creador, salvador y santificador sobre el mundo. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Toda devoción mariana debe seguir los pasos de Cristo. Y todo lo que decimos acerca de María deberíamos decirlo de nosotros como Iglesia, porque ella es nuestra madre, hermana y modelo. Si Jesús es el Hijo de Dios, María y nosotros también somos hijos e hijas de Dios. Si Jesús tiene un Sagrado Corazón que arde por amor al humano, María tiene un corazón inmaculado que arde con ese mismo amor. Y nosotros? La devoción al Inmaculado Corazón de María fue promovida por el Papa Pío XII en 1942, durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. El Papa pidió a María tres gracias para los fieles en Cristo: amor a la pureza, práctica de la vida cristiana y celo apostólico. De esta manera nuestro corazón puede llegar a ser como el de ella. El corazón inmaculado de María es un corazón que no tiene mancha de pecado. Es un corazón que imita el Sagrado Corazón de su Hijo y Dios, Jesús. Es recuerdo de lo que nuestros corazones pueden ser.
