Normally he sat by the side of the road being a good blind beggar. But one day Jesus passed nearby. Bartimaeus jumped up and called out to Jesus. We can imagine him turning toward the direction of the commotion and noise. Bartimaeus probably had his arms outstretched as he shouted out to the son of David. The people who knew him were embarrassed by his outburst. They tried to hush him up and get him to sit back down by the roadside. Their actions spoke volumes: Bartimaeus, you re not fit for Jesus. But it was okay for them and other sighted people to follow Jesus. In today s readings, we learn that true blindness is not a condition of our eyes but of our hearts. THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY! 3 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In the tangled but fascinating history of penance in the Church, the Irish tariff system helped us survive the collapse of the old system of public canonical penance and prepared the way for a new system that emerged in the twelfth century. The old form was unrepeatable, public, dealt with serious community matters, and regulated by the bishops as chief reconcilers. The new form had a more intimate setting of penitent and confessor, was extremely repeatable, and applied to everyone. The old canonical form was closed to children, who were hardly capable of the very grown up sins listed, or their demanding remedies. The old form was likewise closed to clerics, who were protected in a sense by the very nature of the discipline. In the new Irish form the penitent directly named sins, or answered direct questions by the priest. Sometimes, the penitent would recite a long formula accusing him- or herself in a general way of all sorts of sins, even from the distant past. Next, priest and penitent together would lie prostrate before the altar and recite several of the psalms with penitential themes. Finally, the priest would pronounce a judgment, deciding what form and duration the penance should take, normally insisting that the person return for reconciliation once the penances were completed. Xin cho tôi nhìn thấy lại." Ðây có phải là tiếng kêu của tôi không? Khả năng thấy là một khả năng mỏng dòn. Ta có thể thấy điều này mà không thấy điều kia. Tôi có thể lúc thấy lúc không, hay cố ý không muốn thấy. Lắm khi tôi không đủ sức để ra khỏi sự mù lòa của mình. Tôi có kêu gào với Chúa để xin được ơn thấy lại không? Một người mù chữ, dù đã được xóa mù, vẫn có thể mù lại. Chính vì thế tôi cứ phải xin cho mình được thấy luôn. Thấy mình bé nhỏ, thấy Chúa bao la, thấy anh em dễ mến. Thấy là đi vào một con đường dài hun hút. Chúng ta phải được Chúa xóa mù suốt đời. Chỉ trong ánh sáng của Chúa, tôi mới nhìn thấy ánh sáng. Như người mù ngồi bên vệ đường, xin Chúa dủ lòng thương cho con được thấy. Xin cho con được thấy bản thân với những yếu đuối và khuyết điểm, những giả hình và che đậy. Cho con được thấy Chúa hiện diện bên con cả những khi con không cảm nghiệm được. Ý chung: Cầu cho việc xoá nạn buôn người: Xin Chúa cho nạn buôn người, một hình thức nô lệ mới, bị xoá tận gốc. BARBARA PARISH SCHOOL Commi ed to Student Excellence 1:1 Chromebooks in the Classroom The school year has proven to be a year of great change in the classrooms at St. Barbara Parish School. Each student in first to third grades received ipads while fourth through eighth graders were given Chromebooks. ETechbooks and apps have been purchased and/or installed to enable teachers and students to fully use the new technology. Teachers instruct the students, followed by computer time for students to complete activities on their ipad or Chromebook. This frees up the teacher to assist those students who require individualized attention or further explanation. Teachers can also assess computer activities to evaluate if individual students and/or the whole class have learned the subject matter.
