3 July Page 3 REFLECTION ON TODAY S GOSPEL OBSTACLES The prophet Ezekiel, Saint Paul, and the Lord Jesus share something in common in today's scripture readings. They all experience obstacles to their ministry. Ezekiel is summoned to prophesy to the Israelites, who are "[h]ard of face and obstinate of heart" (Ezekiel 2:4). Saint Paul recounts how he has been given a "thorn in the flesh" (2 Corinthians 12:7). The Lord Jesus is unable to perform many signs in his native place. The Gospel tells us that "[he] was amazed at their lack of faith" (Mark 6:6). We too sometimes encounter obstacles as we travel along the journey of faith. So often we experience weakness on this journey. Let the words of the Lord to Saint Paul encourage us today: "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness" (2 Corinthians 12:9). Thánh Bênêđích được đề cập đến nhiều trong các Ðối Thoại của Thánh Grêgôriô Cả sau khi ngài chết khoảng năm mươi năm, nhưng đó chỉ là các sơ thảo của biết bao điều lạ lùng trong cuộc đời thánh nhân. Ngài sinh trong một gia đình lỗi lạc ở Nursia, thuộc miền trung nước Ý, theo học tại Rôma và ngay từ khi còn trẻ, ngài đã thích đời sống đan viện. Lúc đầu, ngài là một vị ẩn tu sống trong một cái hang ở Subiaco, xa lánh thế giới nhiều chán nản mà lúc bấy giờ giặc ngoại giáo đang lan tràn, Giáo Hội bị phân chia bởi ly giáo, chiến tranh, đạo lý ở mức độ thấp nhất. Sau đó không lâu, ngài thấy không thể sống cuộc đời ẩn dật ở gần thành phố, dù lớn hay nhỏ, do đó ngài đi lên núi cao, sống trong một cái hang và ở đó ba năm. Trong một thời gian, một số đan sĩ chọn ngài làm vị lãnh đạo, nhưng họ cảm thấy không thể theo được sự nghiêm nhặt của ngài. Tuy nhiên, đó cũng là lúc ngài chuyển từ đời sống ẩn tu sang đời sống cộng đoàn. Ngài có sáng kiến quy tụ các nhánh đan sĩ khác nhau thành một "Ðại Ðan Viện", đem lại cho họ lợi ích của sự hợp quần, tình huynh đệ, và luôn luôn thờ phượng dưới một mái nhà. Sau cùng, ngài khởi công xây dựng một đan viện nổi tiếng nhất thế giới ở núi Cassino, cũng là nơi phát sinh dòng Bênêđích. Todos encontraron obstáculos en su ministerio. Ezequiel fue llamado para que profetizara a los israelitas, convertidos en "un pueblo rebelde" (Ezequiel 2:4). San Pablo relata cómo se le ha metido una "espina clavada en mi carne" (2 Corintios 12:7). El Señor Jesús no puede realizar demasiados milagros en su tierra natal. El Evangelio nos dice que "estaba extrañado de la incredulidad de aquella gente" (Marcos 6:6). Nosotros, también, algunas veces nos topamos con obstáculos al transitar el camino de la fe. Muchas veces en nuestro viaje nos sentimos débiles. Que las palabras del Señor a san Pablo nos animen hoy: "Te basta mi gracia, porque mi poder se manifiesta en la debilidad" (2 Corintios 12:9). TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE En los calendarios antiguos se celebraba la memoria de san Cristóbal el día 10 de este mes. Pero, con la reforma del Concilio Vaticano II este pobre santo se quedó sin trabajo sólo por el hecho de no poder comprobar su existencia. No fue que la reforma del Concilio Vaticano II quisiera haber negado al pobre de Cristóbal ni a tantos otros santos que fueron quitados del Santoral Romano. Sólo buscaba hacer lugar para nuevos santos y beatos; y menos mal, porque eventualmente el Papa Juan Pablo II canonizó y beatificó a más de mil personas durante su pontificado. Muchos de estos santos no son tan bien conocidos como nuestro amigo san Cristóbal. Aunque ya no está en el calendario eclesiástico, Cristóbal continúa en los tableros de muchos carros ofreciendo su servicio de protección para los automovilistas. Esta chambita la consiguió porque ayudaba a cruzar el río a personas en camino, hasta que un día le tocó cargar con el niño Dios.
