REFLECTION ON THE WORD OF GOD April 07, 2019 - Page 3 Jesus knew the scribes and Pharisees were trying to trap him. They put him in what seemed to be a no-win situation.

Let her be stoned, and he would fail to show mercy toward her, contradicting his life s message.

In Christ, God does something new. When we give our hearts to Christ, we have the hope of new life, a life in which mercy reigns.

Otherwise, we become like people with a disease who are in denial of its implications we cannot hope to be cured unless we admit that it exists.

We may have moments of intense union with God and live as we know we ought. Yet we also have times when we miss the mark.

We point to the splinter in our neighbor s eye while failing to remove the plank from our own. Jesus response to the scribes and Pharisees is clear on this account.

The good news is that God s mercy is available, always, at all times.

Jesus encounter with the woman in today s Gospel, as with so many others in the course of his earthly ministry, stands as proof that God is merciful and forgiving.

3 REFLECTION ON THE WORD OF GOD April 07, Page 3 Jesus knew the scribes and Pharisees were trying to trap him. They put him in what seemed to be a no-win situation. Let the woman who was caught in adultery go, and he would have been accused of ignoring the law. Let her be stoned, and he would fail to show mercy toward her, contradicting his life s message. Jesus response teaches three crucial lessons: none of us is free of sin; we are not the ultimate judges of others; Jesus is the mercy of God, in whom we can always trust. In Christ, God does something new. When we give our hearts to Christ, we have the hope of new life, a life in which mercy reigns. NO ONE IS SINLESS Sin isn t a word we use very often in today s culture. Yet we must be honest and acknowledge that we sin. Otherwise, we become like people with a disease who are in denial of its implications we cannot hope to be cured unless we admit that it exists. Sin is a disease of the soul, a dis-ease in our relationship with God. When we sin, we fail to live as we know God desires. The truth is, no one is sinless. We all fail. We may have moments of intense union with God and live as we know we ought. Yet we also have times when we miss the mark. Because we are human and know that we fail, it is easy to adopt a pattern of judgmental behavior. We point to the splinter in our neighbor s eye while failing to remove the plank from our own. Jesus response to the scribes and Pharisees is clear on this account. Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her. GOD S MERCY IS FOR EVERYONE The bad news is that we all sin. The good news is that God s mercy is available, always, at all times. We must be sorry for our failures and, if our sin is grave, take part in the sacrament of Reconciliation. As we continue to journey through the season of Lent, it is good for us to pause and reflect on our relationship with Christ and on God s infinite mercy. As we begin April, National Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Diocese wants to reiterate that it remains committed to helping survivors, and their families, heal and find peace. 5 Cộng Đoàn Thánh Giuse April 07, Page 5 7 tháng 4 Bình An Trong Tâm Hồn Purna, một môn đệ của Ðức Thích Ca, xin thầy được phép đi đến Sronapa-Ranta, một vùng còn bán khai để tiếp tục tu luyện và truyền đạo. Nhân lời xin này, người ta ghi lại cuộc đối thoại giữa hai thầy trò như sau: Ðức Thích Ca cho biết ý kiến: "Nhân dân vùng Sronapa-Ranta còn rất man di. Họ nổi tiếng thô bạo và tàn ác. Bẩm tính của họ là hiếu chiến, thích gây sự, thích cãi vã, đánh nhau và làm hại kẻ khác. Lúc đến đó, nếu họ nghi kỵ con, dùng những lời thô bạo để nói xấu, mắng chửi và vu khống con, con sẽ nghĩ thế nào?". Purna thưa: "Nếu thật sự xảy ra như vậy, thì con nghĩ là: dân chúng tại đây thật tốt lành và thân thiện, vì họ chỉ lăng mạ con chứ không dùng vũ lực, không đánh đập hay ném đá con". Ðức Thích Ca tiếp lời: "Nhưng nếu họ hành hung và dùng đá ném con, thì con sẽ nghĩ thế nào?". Purna thưa: "Trong trường hợp đó, con vẫn nghĩ dân chúng vùng Sronapa-Ranta thật tốt lành và thân thiện, vì họ không cột con vào cột để đánh đòn và không dùng khí giới sắc bén để sát hại con". Nghe môn đệ xác quyết như thế, Ðức Phật không khỏi ngạc nhiên; Ngài hỏi tiếp: "Nhưng nếu họ thật sự ra tay giết con, con nghĩ thế nào trước khi nhắm mắt lìa đời?". Không cần suy nghĩ lâu, Purna đáp: "Nếu họ hại đến tính mạng con, con vẫn nghĩ họ là những người tốt lành và thân thiện, vì họ muốn giải thoát con khỏi thân xác hay hư nát này". Nghe đến đây, Ðức Thích Ca bảo: "Purna, con đã tu tâm dưỡng tính đến nơi đến chốn để có được sự ôn hòa, kiên nhẫn hơn người. Thầy nghĩ con có thể sinh sống và truyền đạo cho dân Sronapa-Ranta. Hãy ra đi và giúp họ dần dần giải thoát khỏi bẩm tính hiếu chiến và bất nhân như chính con đã tự giải thoát mình khỏi những thiên kiến và những ý nghĩ hận thù, ghen ghét". Thiết nghĩ tự tạo cho mình sự bình an trong tâm hồn là bổn phận của Kitô hữu chúng ta. Và theo kinh nghiệm của tu sĩ Purna trong câu chuyện trên, để tạo cho mình nền hòa bình này, chúng ta phải cố gắng tự giải thoát mình khỏi mọi thiên kiến, nghi kỵ cũng như hằng ngày phải thanh luyện tâm hồn khỏi những ý nghĩ hận thù, ghen ghét. De otra manera, nos convertimos como las personas con una enfermedad que está negando sus implicaciones, no podemos esperar a ser sanados a menos que admitamos que existe. El pecado es una enfermedad del alma, una enfermedad en nuestra relación con Dios. Cuando pecamos, fallamos en llevar una vida como Dios desea. La verdad es, nadie está sin pecado. Todos fallamos. Podemos tener momentos de una unión intensa con Dios y vivir como sabemos deberíamos. Pero también algunas veces fallamos en el objetivo. Apuntamos hacia la paja en el ojo ajeno y fallamos en ver la viga en el nuestro. La respuesta de Jesús a los escribas y fariseos es clara en este relato: Aquel de ustedes que no tenga pecado, que le tire la primera piedra. La novedad es que la misericordia de Dios está disponible, siempre, todo el tiempo. Debemos arrepentirnos de nuestras fallas, y si nuestros pecados son graves, entonces debemos ir a confesarnos, recibir el Sacramento de la Reconciliación. El encuentro de Jesús con la mujer en el Evangelio de hoy, así como con las muchas personas a lo largo de su ministerio terrenal, representa una prueba de que Dios es misericordioso y compasivo. Al continuar el camino durante este tiempo de Cuaresma, nos haría bien tomar un descanso y reflexionar en nuestra relación con Cristo y en la misericordia infinita de Dios. Copyright J. S.
