3 November 1, Page 3 WE LONG TO SEE GOD S FACE Lord, this is the people that longs to see your face. This antiphon for today s responsorial psalm offers the focus for today s readings. As we on earth celebrate the triumph of all the saints the ones officially canonized by the Church, and the countless others who have also reached heaven we add nothing to their glory. But we give ourselves reason to hope. We too long to see the face of God and believe that we can one day be counted among those whose robes, as John tells us in the book of Revelation, are washed white in the blood of the Lamb. The passage from John s First Letter offers further assurance: we are God s children who will one day see God. But today s Gospel pulls us past longing and reassurance into action. Jesus clearly tells us what we must do to be counted among the saints. We must be poor in spirit, hungry for holiness, merciful, single-hearted, and peacemakers! Then we too will see the face of God. This Sunday, November 1, 2015, clocks are turned backward 1 hour. Sunrise and sunset will be about 1 hour earlier on Nov 1, 2015 than the day before. There will be more light in the morning. St. Barbara Church Memorial Mass November is the month of all souls in which we remember and pray for all those who have died, family members, spouses, relatives friends, and loved ones. Please join our Parish for the Annual Mass of Remembrance on Monday, November 2, 2015 at 7:00 PM in the Church The Mass will be celebrated in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Eight hundred years ago, the church s practice of penance underwent major revision as theologians, called scholastics, reflected on the practice of their day. By then, penance was normally a very secret rite, celebrated completely apart from the community. Public penance had mostly disappeared behind the walls of monasteries and the cloister grills of convents. The scholastics trimmed penance down to bare essentials, even sweeping aside age old traditions like a laying on of hands and prayers of absolution. All that was left was the confessor s simple statement, Ego te absolvo, I absolve you. In 1614 a new ritual book tried to make penance more public and solemn. It suggested, but did not require, that the priest wear a surplice and stole, and hear the confession in a confessional. For the first time, we have the directive that the priest be separated from the penitent by a screen, a rule that some bishops applied very strictly. By the 1940s, large numbers of Catholics availed themselves of the sacrament of confession every Saturday, and most people thought confession was a prerequisite for Communion. In some urban parish churches, confessionals were staffed, usually by the junior priest, for several hours every day, even during the celebration of Mass. It is remarkable how quickly things changed, but as we have seen, the system has collapsed before and what often comes next is an impulse of the Spirit, new life, and a fresh start. Rev. 5 Chúa Nhật 31 Thường Niên Năm B Ðiều Răn Ðứng Ðầu (Mc 12, 28b-34) Suy Niệm Sống điều răn thứ nhất là đặt Chúa lên trên hết, là dành ưu tiên một cho Chúa giữa những ưu tiên. Coi Chúa là tất cả, mãn nguyện vì có Chúa. Dành cho Chúa tất cả, để Chúa chiếm trọn mình. Ðiều răn thứ hai bắt nguồn từ điều răn thứ nhất: yêu người thân cận như chính mình. Người thân cận là mọi người chẳng trừ ai. Chỉ trong Chúa tôi mới có thể yêu thương đến vô cùng. Trong Chúa, tôi nhận ra tha nhân là anh em, con một Cha,là hình ảnh của Ðức Kitô đang cần tôi giúp đỡ. Trong Chúa, tôi cảm nhận phẩm giá đích thực của một người, dù đó là một thai nhi, một phạm nhân hay người mất trí. Tình yêu thực sự với Thiên Chúa đưa tôi về với anh em. Tình yêu anh em đòi tôi gặp gỡ Thiên Chúa để múc lấy nơi Ngài sức mạnh hầu tiếp tục hiến trao. Ðó là nhịp đập bình thường của trái tim người Kitô hữu,cứ đong đưa giữa hai tình yêu. Hay đúng hơn chỉ có một tình yêu: tôi yêu tha nhân trong Chúa và tôi yêu Chúa nơi tha nhân. Ðức Giêsu đã sống đến cùng hai điều răn Ngài dạy. Ngài sống để yêu và chết vì yêu. Tình yêu của Ngài là lễ toàn thiêu và hy tế. Mỗi tối tôi lại xét mình về tình yêu để thấy mình còn yêu quá ít. Gợi Ý Chia Sẻ Ðâu là chỗ đứng của Thiên Chúa trong đời bạn? Nếu bạn xếp hạng, bạn thấy Ngài bị đặt dưới những thụ tạo nào? Bạn thấy yêu tha nhân có dễ không? Bạn làm gì khi phải sống với một người không hợp tính với bạn? Cầu Nguyện Lạy Chúa Giêsu, trước khi con tìm Chúa, Chúa đã đi tìm con. Trước khi con thấy Chúa, Chúa đã nhìn thấy con. Trước khi con theo Chúa, Chúa đã đi theo con. Trước khi con yêu Chúa, Chúa đã mến yêu con. Trước khi con thuộc về Chúa, Chúa đã thuộc về con. Trước khi con phụng sự Chúa, Chúa đã phục vụ con. Trước khi con từ bỏ mình vì Chúa, Chúa đã nộp mình vì con. Trước khi con sống và chết cho Chúa, Chúa đã sống và chết cho con. Trước khi con đặt Chúa lên trên hết, Chúa đã coi con là hạnh phúc tuyệt vời của Chúa. Lạy Chúa Giêsu là Thầy của con, Chúa luôn đi trước con. Chúa làm trước khi Chúa dạy. BARBARA PARISH SCHOOL Commied to Student Excellence 1:1 Chromebooks in the Classroom The school year has proven to be a year of great change in the classrooms at St. Barbara Parish School. Each student in first to third grades received ipads while fourth through eighth graders were given Chromebooks. ETechbooks and apps have been purchased and/or installed to enable teachers and students to fully use the new technology. Teachers instruct the students, followed by computer time for students to complete activities on their ipad or Chromebook. This frees up the teacher to assist those students who require individualized attention or further explanation. Teachers can also assess computer activities to evaluate if individual students and/or the whole class have learned the subject matter.
