3 BAPTISM OF THE LORD January 13, Page 3 REFLECTION ON THE WORD OF GOD As we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord, we also honor our own baptism as our initiation into the Christian life and community. In the Gospel, the baptism of Jesus, with his immersion and then emergence from the water, points to his later submission to God at his death, and his emergence from the grave at his resurrection. This pattern of death and resurrection is our path too, as followers of Jesus. Throughout life, often in small ways, we learn to surrender our limited and self-centered agendas. This surrender often feels like death. The sacrament of Baptism ritually enacts this pattern to remind us of Jesus death and resurrection, so that we too might embrace the deaths and resurrections of our own lives. As Jesus emerged from the water, he encountered his Father and the Holy Spirit. Like Jesus, we can know we are God s beloved, empowered by the Spirit. BAPTIZED WITH THE SPIRIT In today s Gospel according to Luke, when John the Baptist clarified that he was not the expected Messiah, the Christ, he distinguished his baptism with water from the baptism with the Holy Spirit and fire that would be offered by Jesus. John s baptism with water signified the surrender of one s own agenda and the opening of one s heart to God. The baptism with fire and Spirit describes God s power entering and transforming the human heart. When Jesus was baptized in water, he publicly displayed his own full commitment to following God s path for him. When the Spirit descended upon Jesus, he was empowered to begin his work. In effect, Jesus received both kinds of baptism described by John. He would go on to baptize those whose hearts were open through his ministry, death, and resurrection. Later, at Pentecost, the new community received a baptism of Spirit with tongues of fire. TRINITY AND BAPTISM This week s Gospel not only tells of Jesus baptism, but dramatically describes God as the Holy Trinity: Jesus in prayer, the Holy Spirit descending, and the Father s voice from heaven. The nascent church linked its earliest understanding of God as Trinity to Baptism as the initiation into Christian life and community. New Christians were baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Spirit. Jesus was proclaimed Beloved by his Father, and empowered by the Holy Spirit to begin his mission. Mission is a sending; to accept a mission is to be sent. After his ministry, death, resurrection, and ascension, Jesus mission continued through the Spirit beginning at Pentecost. The Father sent the Son and Spirit, who together now send the church into the world. Baptism, then, is the sending of the newly baptized to join the Trinity in this mission. We the baptized are empowered to proclaim that all are God s beloved. Our triune God is already ahead of us in the world, inviting our participation. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. 4 CALLED TO SERVE For many weeks now, we have been celebrating the appearance of the divine presence in human form. As a child, he came to Mary and Joseph, was seen by the shepherds, and then by some wandering magi from the East. Today we celebrate another showing, later in time, to a group gathered at the Jordan River. John hesitated to baptize Jesus, whom he recognized as one mightier than I. But he did as Jesus asked, and the Holy Spirit descended and heaven s voice spoke to Jesus You are my beloved Son. Jesus was beginning his public life of teaching and service. Soon he would start calling others to join him. Peter was one of the first to be called by Jesus. In today s second reading, he announces the heart of the message, peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. Ai trong chúng ta cũng cần có tiền bạc của cải để sống xứng đáng với nhân phẩm. Sự túng thiếu bần cùng là một sự dữ mà Thiên Chúa không bao giờ muốn cho con cái Ngài phải lâm vào. Tuy nhiên, tiền bạc của cải vẫn luôn là con dao hai lưỡi. Nếu được sử dụng như một phương tiện, tiền bạc sẽ giúp cho con người sống xứng đáng với phẩm giá của mình hơn. Nếu trái lại, con người chạy theo tiền của như một cứu cánh trong đời người, nghĩa là con người có thể tôn thờ nó như thần tượng để quên đi tất cả những giá trị khác trong cuộc sống, thì lúc đó, sự phá sản về vật chất cũng như tinh thần là điều tất yếu với con người. Cuando era niño, Jesús vivió con María y José, al nacer lo visitaron unos pastores y luego algunos errantes magos de Oriente. Hoy celebramos otra situación, ocurrida un tiempo después, a un grupo reunido en el río Jordán. Juan vaciló cuando le tocó bautizar a Jesús, a quien reconocía como uno más poderoso que yo. Pero hizo como Jesús se lo pidió, descendió el Espíritu Santo y una voz celestial habló a Jesús: Tú eres mi hijo, el predilecto. Jesús estaba empezando su vida pública de enseñanza y de servicio. Pronto comenzaría a llamar a otros a seguirlo. Pedro fue el primero que Jesús llamó. En la segunda lectura de hoy anuncia el centro del mensaje: la paz que traería Jesucristo, el Señor de todos. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE La costumbre del bautismo infantil debe ser mucho más que un acto social o una tradición cultural, donde el ropón y los regalos son más importantes que la doctrina cristiana, y los padrinos se escogen no por su buen ejemplo sino por su cuenta bancaria. Según los Hechos de los Apóstoles, familias enteras se bautizaban cuando el padre de familia decidía hacerse cristiano. Esta práctica de bautizar, no solo al nuevo creyente sino también a su mujer y a sus hijos, poco a poco, quedó solo en bautizar los niños del original creyente. El mundo en aquel tiempo estaba basado sobre la familia así como muchas culturas latinas de hoy. El bautizo infantil nació en la Iglesia primitiva y al pasar de los siglos llegó a transformarse en un rito religioso muy importante en la catequesis del nuevo cristiano. El niño viste de ropita blanca que recuerda la presencia de Cristo en su alma, se le regala una vela que lo invita a brillar con la luz de Cristo y se le da una madrina o un padrino que le enseñará a vivir en Cristo.
