2 Saint Matthew Sunday Nursery Did you know that while you are at church your child (age 1 through 4) can be socializing; praying and having fun with children his/her own age. Our nursery is open for Sunday School Parents at 9am to be able to join Richard for the parent class and at 10am for Mass. We ask that you arrive at least 10 minutes before Mass begins to preregister for our new check in system. Questions? The Feast of Corpus Christi The Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ, also known as the Feast of Corpus Christi is such an important and beautiful celebration, because it provides a wonderful opportunity for us to share the pinnacle of our faith with the world. And, there are many ways everyone can help to make our celebration here at Saint Matthew Parish a truly joyful and spiritual celebration. This year, Corpus Christi falls on the weekend of June 3 rd. Since we will also be celebrating with those receiving First Holy Communion on June 2 nd and 3 rd, we invite all the members of the FHC class to join us for the procession after the 10:30 AM Mass - dressed in all their finery for the occasion. Each member of the class will receive a candle to carry in procession. We are still looking for lay ministry members and families or individuals to help out by sponsoring and decorating an altar station. Sign ups are at the Narthex desk, where you can pick up an instruction sheet for decorating your altar. Sponsors are encouraged to be creative, and may also participate by contributing a song or prayer at their station. This year we will be hosting a bread drive. What better way to honor our Lord who gives us his body and blood each week than to share with those in need? Everyone is invited to bring loaves of bread to donate. As our Father lavishes us with bread from heaven, so may we be generous in sharing with our community. Donated loaves may be used to decorate the altars, or you may place your loaves in the specially decorated bread wagon to donate your loaves. At the end of the procession all bread will be gathered and given to a local charity. No matter how you choose to participate, be sure to join us for the procession after the 10:30 AM Mass on June 3 rd and help us to share the Bread of Life! The Feast of Saint Matthew The feast of a Parishes patron saint is such an important day, that when it falls on the weekend, it becomes a solemnity in that parish! This year, to celebrate our patronal feast day, we will be making a pilgrimage to the Diocesan Cathedral of Saint James in Orlando. After Morning Mass on Friday, September 21, (save the date!) we will travel by bus to the cathedral, where we will be able to go to confession and attend midday Mass. Lunch will be provided at the Cathedral, and then we will have the opportunity to tour both the cathedral and the chancery our diocesan headquarters if you will. There will be a fee of $20.00 per person to cover the cost of the bus and lunch. Watch for further information on when and how to sign up for this special trip. THE GOLDEN LADIES SINGLE WOMEN 60 PLUS Have you ever been lonely and wish there was someone to talk to besides your dog or cat? Maybe you just wanted to go to the movies or get a cup of coffee but really did not want to go by yourself. This may be the group for you. We meet the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 in the Parish Center, Cenacle. Add your photo to our Online Church Directory. 4 Called to Serve on a Mission Trip The Diocese of Orlando Mission Office invites you to consider joining any of its scheduled mission trips to our sister diocese of San Juan de la Maguana. Dates are as follows: Feed the Hungry Every Sunday from 12:30 2:00 p.m. different teams of parishioners gather together at the Disciples Corner, 197 W. Central Ave. in the parking lot of our Thrift/Gift Shop and pass out bags of food to those who are in need of something to eat. The 5 th Sunday of the month a hot meal is served. 7 St. Matthew Columbarium JUNE 9-13, 2018 A conference focused on how to be and make disciples in our day to day lives, centered on the scriptures found in The Gospel of St. Matthew Deacon Harold will preach at all the Masses and speak Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. THE BATTLE PLAN FOR PURITY Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. May 10 - July 12 The Conquer Series is a cinematic group study which every man should attend. Chains are being broken. Marriages are being restored. For the first time in history, a cinematic teaching series is here to offer men proven principles and practical tools to be a warrior and walk with sexual integrity. The Conquer Series men s small groups are designed to be a safe environment for men to receive sexual discipleship. With 68% of men in the church viewing porn on a regular basis, this is a course that every man should attend so you are equipped with the tools you need to help other men in this fight. This is a place where men can contend together, find support and acceptance. A typical Conquer Group is made up of 5 to 6 men, including the group leader. The setting is casual. You will watch one DVD per week, discuss topics presented in the DVD, and be given a weekly mission to apply the lessons you ve learned from the Conquer Series. You will also receive a study guide which includes the tools that a man needs to finish strong. This Summer, (July 27-29) Saint Matthew s going to Steubenville Youth Conference in Orlando! We are inviting everyone who is in 8 th grade 12 th grade to join us for this life changing retreat! You do not have to be in our Faith Formation program to come along. The price of the trip will be $375 per student, but we are offering scholarships for those who may need financial assistance! Steubenville Youth Conference Sponsors We are looking for sponsors for our Teens Summer Retreat! We are planning on attending Steubenville Youth Conference in Orlando. YOU: Life, Love, and the Theology of the Body introduces teens to the truth that life is not, in fact, all about them; it is about going out of themselves to be a sincere gift for others. 9 Parishioner Name Badges Your Name As our Community continues to grow, to renew and to build, here is a wonderful opportunity to get to know one another better as we have been called by name into the body of Christ. Please join in this effort to reach out to one another, to call one another by name. As a parish, we are offering each member a nametag to wear to all parish functions. There is no charge for the name tag. All we ask is that if you choose to receive one that you wear it when you come to Church. They are also being offered to our registered Winter Residents. If you would like to receive one you can go to our parish website and click on the link to order one or stop by the information desk in the Narthex and fill out the Nametag Order Card. The Prayer Shawl Ministry has been busy knitting and crocheting prayer shawls and lap robes. A basket in the chapel has a colorful selection of these shawls. All the shawls have been prayed over and once finished, they have been blessed. Please feel free to stop by and select one for an ill or convalescing family member. BASILICA CHOIR PERFORMS CONCERT CELEBRATING EASTER AND PENTECOST The Choir of the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe, will present a special concert entitled Come to Us, Creative Spirit on Sunday, May 20th at 3:00 pm, as part of the Basilica s Concert Series. At this concert, the Basilica Choir will perform music celebrating the many facets of this holy season, including music by Mozart, Mendelssohn, Vaughan Williams and local composers Marshall Webb, Wm. Glenn Osborne, Gary Prettyman and more. Also performed will be Handel s famous Hallelujah Chorus from Messiah. The Basilica Choir was founded to minister to the many thousands of tourists and visitors to the central Florida area, and to provide sacred music at weekend Masses. The singers in the choir are all professional musicians in the Orlando area and are under the direction of Dr. William Picher. Admission charge for the concert is $25 for adults, under 12 are free. THỤ PHONG LINH MỤC Năm nay Giáo phận Orlando sẽ có hai tân linh mục là cha Matthew Hawkins và Blake Britton. Thánh lễ phong chức linh mục sẽ vào lúc 10 giờ sáng Thứ Bảy 26.5 tại nhà thờ chính toà St. James ở Orlando. Chúng ta hãy cầu nguyện cho hai cha này BÀN THỜ KIỆU THÁNH THỂ Sau Thánh Lễ Mình Máu Chúa Kitô (Corpus Christi) lúc 10g30 sáng, các hội đoàn và giáo dân sẽ kiệu Thánh Thể chung quanh giáo xứ. Cha xứ O Brien kêu gọi Giáo Đoàn Việt Nam tích cực tham dự đoàn kiệu này dù có Lễ 6g30 chiều. Ca đoàn có thể tham gia hát một vài bài Thánh ca Việt Nam. Cha Quản nhiệm đề nghị một vài gia đình họp lại phụ trách trang trí cho toà Thánh Thể trên đường kiệu. Giáo Đoàn chúng ta cần làm tối thiểu 4 hay 5 toà như thế. 11 LỊCH SỬ NGÀY CỦA MẸ - MOTHER'S DAY Nguồn gốc Ngày Của Mẹ (Mother s Day) có vào thời kỳ cổ Hy Lạp và La Mã. Nhưng thịnh hành sau này tại Anh Quốc, nơi đó Chúa Nhật Ngày Của Mẹ đã được tổ chức rầm rộ trước khi ngày lễ này được thành hình bên Hoa Kỳ nhờ hai bà Julia Ward Howe và Anna Jarvis. Ngày nay việc liên hoan cho Ngày Của Mẹ được tổ chức ở 46 quốc gia trên thế giới và là một dịp rất thịnh hành cho mọi dân tộc. Hàng triệu người trên khắp thế giới dùng cơ hội này để tưởng nhớ người mẹ của mình, tri ân họ về việc sinh thành, dưỡng dục, luôn nâng đỡ và khuyến khích con cái. Lịch sử cận đại nhất về Ngày Của Mẹ được bắt đầu vào khoảng năm 1600 bên Anh Quốc. Ngày này được tổ chức hàng năm vào Chúa Nhật thứ tư của mùa chay (40 ngày đến Lễ Phục Sinh) để tri ân các bà mẹ. Sau khi buổi cầu nguyện kính Đức Nữ Đồng Trinh Maria, các trẻ em mang quà và hoa đến tri ân cho các bà mẹ của mình. Vào năm 1872, Bà Julia Ward Howe đề nghị lấy ngày 2 tháng Sáu hàng năm để tổ chức Ngày Của Mẹ và để cống hiến cho công cuộc hoà bình. Bà tranh đấu không ngừng cho việc chánh thức công nhận một ngày cho các bà mẹ. Nhưng bà Anna Jarvis mới là người sáng lập Ngày Của Mẹ ở Mỹ Quốc. Là một người con rất yêu mẹ mình, bà Anna đã quyết tâm tranh đấu cho bằng được có một ngày tri ân các người mẹ. Để bắt đầu, bà đã dâng hoa cẩm chướng đến nhà thờ ở Graton, Virginia để tỏ lòng kính trọng mẹ mình. Sau đó, bà Anna và những người ủng hộ bà đã viết thư cho các nhân viên cao cấp trong chính phủ, trong quốc hội, cũng như những quan quyền ở các tiểu bang để vận động cho một ngày của các bà mẹ một cách chính thức. Vào năm 1911, Ngày Của Mẹ đã được tổ chức hầu hết ở các tiểu bang Mỹ. Và ngày 8 tháng Năm, 1914, Tổng Thống Woodrow Wilson đã ký một nghị quyết ấn định ngày Chúa Nhật thứ hai của tháng Năm làm Ngày Của Mẹ (Mother s Day) trên đất nước Hoa Kỳ. Các con cái đã tặng hoa, gởi thiệp, và nhiều món quà khác cho mẹ thân yêu của mình để tri ân công ơn sinh thành dưỡng dục trong Ngày Hiền Mẫu này.
