Watch an infant take those first wobbly steps. Inevitably they are toward the arms of a dear one, and the gleeful smile and wordless laughter let us know that the baby understands that the whole world is renewed in an instant. Parents may see that wide-eyed smile again some years later as they flip car keys in the teenager s direction, and by God s grace at in-between moments of forgiveness and affirmation. Sacraments open a window to the blessings of everyday life and help us claim their deep meaning. A voice from a fiery bush warned Moses to take off his shoes because he stood on holy ground. Your first steps, your first word, taking your place at the family table, stirring to new love, forgiving and being forgiven: all of this is holy, laden with meaning, full of possibilities. Sacraments are not escape pods from the realities of the everyday; rather they invest us ever more deeply in life and recruit us for the kingdom inaugurated by Jesus. We take baby steps all our life long. In the world of sacrament, they are always directed toward the arms of a loving God, and always on the common holy ground of a community s life. Rev. CHRISTMAS FLOWER OFFERING

4 FAZtor s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora Happy Joyful Sunday or Gaudete Sunday! That s what we celebrate on this Third Sunday of Advent as we light the Candle of Joy on our Advent Wreath. It s ten days before Christmas, more or less, and really it s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, everywhere you go. The Christmas lights flicker once again. Thanks to our parishioners Tony Sideco, Tante Chan, Ed Lozano and Lito Coloma for putting up the lights on our church premises, including our rectory. Christmas lights also shine in our hearts as we hear Christmas songs played or performed live. Our school children set alight our hearts this week with their songs. Last Thursday, was our school Christmas concert and Friday, our Preschool Christmas concert. Our Youth Group are also lighting the hearts of our Homebound parishioners at the Homebound Mass this weekend as they sing Christmas carols and serve the refreshments. It is indeed a Gaudete, Joyful Sunday! It s a Season of Joy and it doesn t matter if we mess up the lyrics in our Christmas carols, we just want to proclaim the joy this season brings. Here is one merry song with a messed up lyric. Sing it to the original melody of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. Arrest these merry gentlemen and make them go away, Arrest these merry gentlemen it may be Christmas Day. But they're singing and they're shouting and they're causing an affray, So take tidings to Constable Joy. Arrest these merry gentlemen a'begging in the street, They're dirty and they're ragged, they've no boots upon their feet. They're not the type of person, who we really wish to meet, So take tidings to Constable Joy. Arrest these merry gentlemen they're rough unruly louts, Now they've started arguing and loudly they do shout. And soon I think we'll see some Christmas boxing breaking out, So take tidings to Constable Joy. Arrest these merry gentlemen who in their gutters crawl, The good, the bad, the ugly, the long, the short, the tall. We'd like to wish a miserable Christmas to them all, So take tidings to Constable Joy Q: Why do we wish people a "Merry Christmas" instead of a "Happy Christmas"? A: The two are about the same, but with "Merry Christmas" an extra twinkle is seen in the eyes. The Second Vatican Council: A 50th Anniversary Retrospective By the twenty-first Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church, October 11, 1962-December 8, 1965; Edited by Jerry Back Question: What changes did the Second Vatican Council institute with regards to the sacraments of ordination and marriage? Answer from Sacrosanctum Concilium: Both the ceremonies and texts of the ordination rites are to be revised. The address given by the bishop at the beginning of each ordination or consecration may be in the mother tongue (Editor s note: the locally-used language). When a bishop is consecrated, the laying of hands may be done by all the bishops present. The marriage rite now found in the Roman Ritual is to be revised and enriched in such a way that the grace of the sacrament is more clearly signified and the duties of the spouses are taught. If any regions are wont to use other praiseworthy customs and ceremonies when celebrating the sacrament of matrimony, the sacred Synod earnestly desires that these by all means be retained. Moreover the competent territorial ecclesiastical authority mentioned in Articles 22 and 52, of this Constitution is free to draw up its own rite suited to the usages of place and people, according to the provision of Article 63. But the rite must always conform to the law that the priest assisting at the marriage must ask for and obtain the consent of the contracting parties. Matrimony is normally to be celebrated within the Mass, after the reading of the gospel and the homily, and before "the prayer of the faithful." The prayer for the bride, duly amended to remind both spouses of their equal obligation to remain faithful to each other, may be said in the mother tongue. But if the sacrament of matrimony is celebrated apart from Mass, the epistle and gospel from the nuptial Mass are to be read at the beginning of the rite, and the blessing should always be given to the spouses. Editor s Note: Sacrosanctum Concilium (the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy) has as its central aim a focus on greater participation of the laity in the liturgy. We are now reviewing the constitution s third chapter, The Other Sacraments and Sacramentals. Future chapters in Sacrosanctum Concilium will look at "The Divine Office," "The Liturgical Year," "Sacred Music," and "Sacred Art." Donations to Holy Name Parish All donations to the Archbishop s Annual Appeal 2013 or to Holy Name Parish must be received by December 31, 2013 to be credited to your 2013 donations. Thank you for remembering and supporting Holy Name Parish. Your generosity is much appreciated!

As the pungent odors trapped in the airless cellar burned in his nostrils, John closed his eyes and escaped to the sunlight of the desert where a clean, hot wind was blowing across his face. High above John s prison cell, on the terraces of the castle, a cool breeze flowed through Salome s dark hair. It made her smile with pleasure. Her eyes darted briefly to meet a return glance from Herod Antipas, who sat clutching his wine goblet with one fat hand, the other sprawled on the thigh of his new wife, Herodias. In the silence of his cell John continued to struggle with dark doubts about Jesus. Despite the unforgettable memories of their meeting the baptism, the voice in the heavens John still wondered. Who was this man? Perhaps one day his answer would come back from the messenger he had sent to see Jesus. The clank of keys announced the approach of a prison guard. John stood and took two steps to the cell entrance and pressed his shaggy face against the bars. It was Aurius, the young guard who a week before had looked the other way when a visitor had managed to get to John. Someone s coming, Aurius said without breaking stride as he passed John s cell. In a moment the messenger was at John s door. I saw Jesus, he reported. What did he say? John urged. Jesus said to tell you what I hear and see: that blind men see, cripples walk, lepers are made clean, the ears of the deaf are opened and dead men have been raised to life. His messenger left quickly, leaving John with a smuggled piece of bread. As he chewed, the impact of the message wrenched tears from John s eyes. These were the words of the Prophet Isaiah, which Jesus knew John would recognize as a special sign. Suddenly all doubts flowed away, leaving the baptizer filled with a warm glow of peace. There was no question. Jesus really was the messiah, the one to come. When Aurius and other guards came for him a few moments later, John was smiling. Even as he bowed before the headsman, his heart still sang in the peace of Christ. John had been privileged to be the herald in the desert the first to call Jesus The Lamb of God. Later, on the terrace, Herodias thought the expression on John s face was a grimace. She could never know that it was John s triumphant smile. Like John the Baptist, we are all subject to dark nights of doubt. But, like the dawn, Jesus sends the bright message that calms our hearts. Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Jesus is born again each day in the hearts of those who love him.
