And this had been going on for a while now. My parents, whose duties at Church took them there very early, were worried that we weren t showing up early, as we used to. What could be the problem? In the past, this was never an issue in my family, we were always in the church 10 minutes before Mass, or 5 minutes at least. My mother asked the most senior of my brothers. He said, it was a battle of who will dress well to go to the Church. It was a shock to my mother because years back, after the war, we barely had clothes at all. I remember I had one outfit for school and, and another one for staying at home, so the question of what to wear was never a problem, because I had limited choices, or no choice at all. As we woke up from our bed, only two things will come to your mind: wash your body and put on your clothes and go to school or to church as the case may be. In those days, we were never late to school, church or any function we were required to show up. It was never a problem to dress up. Now, God had blessed the family, and we had lots of clothes and shoes. It was taking a lot of our time in terms of trying to dress gorgeously for Mass. In the quest to put on our best we were late for Mass always. Everybody was commenting on what you were wearing, and because there were options we always kept changing to put on the best. Our priority had changed from getting to church early to how I am looking. My mother was so sad about the experience that she took away the boxes of clothes and put them away in her room. On Saturday night she would call you up and give you your clothes, and that was the end of the late coming. And she kept saying to us, Don t allow your blessings to be your curse. ***** After the rescue from Egyptian servitude and slavery, the miracles, the plagues, and crossing of the Red Seas in our own lives, we still have the guts to fail God, reject his gifts, and question his presence among us. Lenten Speaker Series. The Mass by Fr. Christopher Bransfield RCIA (Adapted for Children), March 19th Class at 9:30 a.m. Parish Ministry Center. Attend 12:15 p.m. Mass with your Sponsor for First Scrutiny. (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Are you an adult seeking baptism? Or a baptized Christian seeking the full communion of the Catholic church? Or perhaps a baptized Catholic who wishes to complete initiation in the sacrament of confirmation? This program is for adults who are seeking baptism, or were baptized Catholic but have not celebrated the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. This is a process marked by liturgical rites that are celebrated with the community. This process is centered on the readings and includes attending Mass. For those who are spiritually prepared, they will receive the Sacraments of Initiation, (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist) during the Easter Vigil. CLOW (Children s Liturgy of the Word) During the 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Masses, children are dismissed to the Parish Ministry Center Chapel for an age appropriate Liturgy of the Word. 5 MINISTRY NEWS COMMUNITY MINISTRY Outreach Dinner Thank you to the St. Justin Men s Club the Stablemates, who sponsored last week s Outreach Dinner. There is another Outreach Dinner taking place today, March 19, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in our Parish Small Hall. All Senior Citizen members of our Parish are invited, along with a guest, to this meal followed by BINGO. Financial Assistance for Parishioners St. Justin Community Ministry has set aside some funds to provide Parishioners with limited Financial Assistance when facing unexpected issues. If you find yourself in need, contact Joe Bauer at extension 109 or jbauer@dsj.org Food & Diaper Collection Most of you are aware of the Community Ministry Collection Barrels that are located in our Church. During the month of March, we will continue to request canned Soup, Pork & Beans, Chili, Macaroni & Cheese and Tomato Sauce. We are also in need of Baby Diapers (Size 3 5). These are items that we do not receive often from the Second Harvest Food Bank. Please feel free to drop donations in the barrels in the Church, the barrel in the Foyer of the School or bring items to the Parish Office. Encounter Opportunity We encounter Fernando in El Salvador where, despite a lack of economic opportunity, youth are pursuing their dreams of building businesses to better the lives of their families. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Long ago, the custom of sending some pieces of consecrated bread from the Lord s table began to take hold. Originally it was a way of assuring the sick and imprisoned of their bonds of faith and affection with the community from whom they were separated. By the third century, at least in Rome, we have evidence that the bishop would consign some of the sacred elements to presbyters or deacons. There was a crisis in the unity of the church early on, called the quartodeciman controversy, since some people wanted to celebrate the Pasch on the fourteenth day (quartodecima) of the Jewish month Nissan, even if it didn t fall on a. The debate so fractured the church that the historian of the era, Eusebius, reported a new development to the pope. He wrote that the churches holding to the Lord s Day sent out consecrated bread to the disgruntled people of the quartodeciman pastors with whom they were quarreling. Meanwhile, bishops complained about people taking the Eucharist home. St. Cyprian told a cautionary tale of a sinful woman who tried to open the casket containing the consecrated bread in her home. She was deterred from receiving, he said, by flames erupting from the box. Clearly, he wanted people to think twice before bringing Communion home! The Council of Nicaea defined the old rule of the church as allowing for reserving the eucharistic bread for the sake of the dying. The same council could foresee circumstances of persecution when people might have the Eucharist on hand to administer to one another in a time of great danger, literally, at the point of a sword. Thank you very much to all who donated to the St. Justin New Year Coat Resolution through One Warm Coat. With your generosity, we were able to donate 254 items of warm clothing, including coats, jackets, sweaters, sweatshirts, scarves, and hats. These items were delivered to City Team Ministries in San Jose, one of the many drop-off locations of One Warm Coat, and will be delivered to people in need throughout our local communities. Stand and be Counted Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and a commitment in all its dimensions brings you advantages, recognition, and responsibilities of many kinds. Being a registered parishioner makes things much easier when it is time for infant Baptism, weddings, when asked to be a Baptismal or Confirmation Sponsor and even funerals. We are often asked to provide affidavits for Baptismal and Confirmation Sponsors. We can only do this if a person is a registered, active and contributing member. So, are you a registered parishioner? If not, please consider registering. Registration forms are available in the Parish Ministry Center or online at ST.MARTIN OF TOURS VILLAGE HOUSE SAYS THANK YOU! St. Martin of Tours Parish would like to extend a special thank you to St. Justin 's Parish Community, for the volunteers who participated in our Village House program. Village House is an interfaith program in which we are providing food, shelter, and other necessities to 15 medically fragile and un-housed women. To facilitate this program, for the entire month of February, St. Martin of Tours had over 1,200 volunteer positions filled by our collective communities. For the month of February, our volunteers provided 84 meals, processed 100+ loads of laundry, and provided transportation for 56 trips between the warming centers and our church. They provided on-site services every morning and evening, including medical support throughout each night. Some of us had an opportunity to meet these women, as well as fellow parishioners. We are grateful for the participation of many groups in our community. What an accomplishment! This program was only successful due to your time, effort, and commitment to our Village House guests. Our guests moved to St. Francis Cabrini on March 1.
