You are a gift to those of us in need. (Name withheld) Sometimes when I wonder if what we do really makes a difference, notes like these come along to remind me that WE DO! When everything was said and done at the end of 2017, St. Justin Community Ministry had packed and distributed food to an average of over 2,300 people each month. Thanksgiving food was given to 480 families. For Christmas, we distributed food to over 520 families and provided Christmas presents to over 1,800 children and grandchildren. Our extra gifts were taken to Sacred Heart Community Services where they were distributed before Christmas. It would be impossible to name all the individuals that help with Community Ministry throughout the year. Many of you helped with our Thanksgiving and Christmas projects that brightened the lives of so many. Thank you all for all you do for others, God Bless and Happy New Year! 3 Message from the Office of the Bishop Temporary Liturgical Adaptations during the Flu/Cold Season 1.We will suspend offering Holy Communion under both Species. 2. Holy Communion will be distributed only into the hands of communicants; during this time, Holy Communion will not be distributed on the tongue. 3. The Sign of Peace should be adapted so as to allow for a greeting that does not involve shaking hands or touching. Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and a commitment in all its dimensions brings you advantages, recognition, and responsibilities of many kinds. Being a registered parishioner makes things much easier when it is time for infant Baptism, weddings, when asked to be a Baptismal or Confirmation Sponsor and even funerals. 4. People should avoid holding hands during the recitation or singing of the Lord s Prayer. 5. A reminder that the obligation to participate in Mass does not hold for those who are seriously ill or may have flu or cold symptoms. When appropriate, we will return to our normal liturgical practices, which highly value full participation in the Eucharist through the sharing of the cup and generous signs of hospitality, reconciliation, and unity. We are often asked to provide affidavits for Baptismal and Confirmation Sponsors. We can only do this if a person is a registered, active and contributing member. So, are you a registered parishioner? If not, please consider registering. It is a life long journey towards a deeper relationship with Christ. Ongoing Faith Formation Program Classes for Pre-K3 through 1 st Grade: 9:00-10:00am. 2 nd Grade through 8 th Grade: 10:15-11:30am Did You Know We Have a Program for Your 3 and 4-year olds? We offer an Early Childhood Program during the 9 a.m. Mass, from Fall until April. Our three and four-year old classes still has plenty of room. Feel free to drop by ANY to see if it might be a good fit for your child. You may obtain registration forms in room 2 or download them from our parish website. Sacramental Preparation Program Letters for First Eucharist Mass selection were mailed to all who have completed registrations. Mandatory First Eucharist parent meeting will be held today,, January 21st at 1:30 p.m. OR next, January 28th at 4:00 p.m. in the Parish Ministry Center. (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Our next meeting is Tuesday, January 23rd at 7:00-8:30pm in the PMC. Come with any questions that you may have about faith, religion, and the Catholic Church. This program is for adults who are seeking baptism, or were baptized Catholic but have not celebrated the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. This is a process marked by liturgical rites that are celebrated with the community. This process is centered on the readings and includes attending Mass. 5 Outreach Dinner COMMUNITY MINISTRY Our Outreach Dinner will be taking place today,, January 21. It will begin at 1:30 p.m. in our Parish Small Hall. All Senior Citizen members of our Parish are invited, along with a guest, to this meal followed by BINGO. Financial Assistance for Parishioners St. Justin Community Ministry has set aside some funds to provide Parishioners with limited Financial Assistance when facing unexpected issues. If you find yourself in need, contact Joe Bauer at extension 109 or jbauer@dsj.org MINISTRY NEWS Food & Diaper Collection Most of you are aware of the Community Ministry Collection Barrels that are located in our Church. During the month of January, we will continue to request canned Soup, Pork & Beans, Chili, Macaroni & Cheese and Tomato Sauce. We are also in need of Baby Diapers (Size 4 5). These are items that we do not receive often from the Second Harvest Food Bank. Please feel free to drop donations in the barrels in the Church, the barrel in the Foyer of the School or bring items to the Parish Office. Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Needed For those of you who have back yard fruit trees with an over abundance of fruit and/or gardens with vegetables please consider donating what you can to Community Ministry. The fruit and vegetables are a welcome addition to the food that we distribute to those seeking assistance. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION One of the most unusual Catholic churches in the world is in Amsterdam: Our Lord in the Attic, or as the locals say, Ons Lieve Heer op Solder. What looks like a beautiful narrow brick mansion alongside a canal is a clever disguise for a very well-preserved seventeenth-century home and a secret church. During the Reformation, the Netherlands was divided into Protestant Holland and the Spanish Netherlands, now known as Belgium, a Catholic stronghold. Protestant reformers seized all the Catholic parishes in Holland and de- Catholicized them. New laws forbade the celebration of the Mass in public. St. Nicholas Church was renamed Old Church by the new owners, and the dispossessed Catholics got to work hiding St. Nicholas Parish in the upper floors of this mansion. Other Catholics did the same thing, but this is the only hidden church that survives today. Mass is still celebrated here. It s a beautiful hideaway, with nothing spared in regard to marble, gilding, a pipe organ, and classic Dutch painting. A few steps away, the Old Church, begun in 1250, stands emptied of the statues and carvings of its Catholic days, its windows replaced by plain glass. The new tenants gave up when it came to the ceiling, which is still painted with saints, biblical scenes, and merchant ships. The Dutch reformers were tolerant sorts, and as long as the Catholics kept out of sight, they were out of mind. Catholicism was at last tolerated in Holland after 1853, but in 1924 when the International Eucharistic Congress was held in Amsterdam, processions of Catholics were still forbidden in the streets. Today, Roman Catholics are about 19 percent of the population, and there s no need for any of them to hide in the attic. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
