Sacrament of the Sick If you know of any parishioner who is ill, at home, or in the hospital, please notify the Parish Office so our Eucharistic Ministers of the Sick may bring communion or anointing can be arranged. Baptism Infant baptism is celebrated following completion of our parish Baptism Preparation Program. New and expectant parents are invited to call the Parish Office at Youth Confirmation High School Youth Confirmation is celebrated during the Easter Season. Registration occurs in the summer Homestead Road, Santa Clara, CA Phone: (408) ~ Website: Wheat and Weeds This weekend, our Gospel reading includes the parable about wheat and weeds that grow together in the field. The slaves of the householder came to him and said, Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where have the weeds come from? He answered, An enemy has done this. His slaves said to him, Do you want us to go and pull them up? He replied, No, if you pull up the weeds, you might uproot the wheat along with them. Let them grow together until harvest; then at harvest time I will say to the harvesters, First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles for burning; but gather the wheat into my barn. (Matthew 13:27-30) If the people of the world make up the wheat and the weeds, which are the wheat and which are the weeds? I m sure we all think we know - we and our friends who see things our way are the wheat and perhaps those who have caused us or our society grief are the weeds! In all seriousness though, who are we to judge? Many of us were lucky. Our parents tried to show us how to be wheat from good seed. We were loved, sheltered and taught to believe in God, to follow Jesus, and be guided by the Holy Spirit. As much as possible, our parents surrounded us with others whom they considered wheat, and helped us avoid weeds that might influence our lives in a negative way. Once we were grown and mature enough to be somewhat sure of ourselves, our beliefs, our faith, we were thrown into a world where there truly seems to be a mixture of wheat and weeds, as God intended. Sometimes our actions and doubts make us weeds. Other times, God s goodness in us characterizes us more like wheat. If the weeds were pulled at this very moment, how many of us would be tossed in the pile to burn? Redemption seems like an ongoing, sometimes elusive goal. As our first reading today reminds us, God s goodness, kindness, mercy and forgiveness are what lead us to repentance and what strengthen our faith. Thinking back on moments of doubt, hasn t it been the kindness and welcoming back from alienation by the faithful (similar to Jesus invitation to the Samaritan woman at the well, John 4:4-26) that returned us into the fold? Wheat or weed, does it matter? We should not judge, but instead shower all people in love the way Jesus showed us, with the hope of increasing God s wheat yield among ourselves and all those whose hearts we can touch. If you have any questions about our programs, contact Tracy Sevigny at RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Are you an adult seeking baptism? Or a baptized Christian seeking the full communion of the Catholic church? Or perhaps a baptized Catholic who wishes to complete initiation in the sacrament of confirmation? Call the front office (408) ext. 0 to schedule an initial meeting with Tracy to begin answering your questions. Youth Faith Formation Ongoing Faith Formation New Registration We provide ongoing faith formation for children age 3 (by December 1) through Junior High. The 3 s 1st grade meet 9-10 a.m., and the 2nd Jr. High meet 10:15-11:30 a.m. from September April. If you are new to our program, you may contact the Front Office (408) , ext. 0 and we will send you a registration packet or you may download one from our website. Ongoing Faith Formation Returning Registration If your child attended faith formation last year, you will receive a packet in August, which will include a database printout for you to sign and return, a calendar, and an invoice for fees. Sacramental Preparation Program We prepare second graders and older for the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist. They must have been enrolled in either Catholic School or our ongoing faith formation program the previous year. Please call the parish office (408) ext. 0 to make a registration appointment. High School Confirmation Registration If you are a high school student interested in participating in our High School Confirmation Process, please call our Front Office, (408) , ext. 0 and schedule a registration appointment. Baptism of School-Age Children If your child is seven years or older and unbaptized, we provide the Rite of Christian Initiation adapted for children. Please call the parish office (408) ext. 0 to make a registration appointment. In Search of Catechists & Aides Our catechetical programs could not function without the dedication of many catechist volunteers. We are looking for both adults and youth who feel called to this very important ministry. We will arrange your training and provide all materials. Our needs at this time are the following: Junior High team members (Sundays, 10:15-11:30am) 5th grade co-catechist (Sundays, 10:15-11:30am) High School Confirmation Team Members (Sundays, 5-6:30 p.m.) Call the Front Office, (408) , if God is calling you today. Vacation Bible Camp August 4 - August 8 9 a.m. - noon Join the fun, as our children learn about Jesus and the Bible while making fun crafts, playing wild games, learning how to live as Christians, while forming community! 5 MINISTRY NEWS Bible Study with Fr. Chris & Fr. Peter every Friday, 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the Parish Ministry Center. Outreach Dinner There will be an Outreach Dinner next Sunday, July 27, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in our Parish Small Hall. All Senior Citizen members of our Parish are invited, along with a guest, to the meal followed by BINGO. Community Ministry Volunteers Needed!!! We are searching for a few adult volunteers who would be able to work in our Food Pantry on Saturdays, from 9 12 p.m. It could be every week or occasionally. If you are interested, contact Joe Bauer at ext. 109 or joeb@st-justin.org Community Ministry Food Collection Most of you are aware of the Community Ministry Collection Barrels that are located in our Church. During the month of July, we will continue to request Canned Soup, Pork & Beans, Chile, Macaroni & Cheese, Tomato Sauce and Canned Tuna. These are items that we do not receive often from the Second Harvest Food Bank. Please feel free to drop donations in the barrels in the Church, in the Foyer of the School or bring items to the Parish Office. Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Needed For those of you who have back yard fruit trees with an over abundance of fruit and/or gardens with vegetables please consider donating what you can to Community Ministry. The fruit and vegetables are a welcome addition to the food that we distribute to those seeking assistance. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Charlemagne, crowned Holy Roman Emperor on Christmas Day, 800, had a major interest in shaping the worship life of the church, and began a long period of reform and regulation. We owe many confirmation policies and practices to his rule. A baptized person was required to be confirmed as soon as the bishop s presence made it possible. Priests were expected to do their best in seeing to it that a newlybaptized child received the Eucharist. One twelfth-century ritual insists that if the child is not yet capable of eating or drinking, then the priest might give him or her some of the Precious Blood on a leaf or a finger. Despite the best efforts of the Empire to hold liturgical life together, the rules were not always lived out with great beauty. St. Richard of Chichester of thirteenthcentury England, for example, was canonized for his holy life as a bishop. One of the remarkable signs of his sanctity was his willingness to climb down from his horse to confirm merely baptized layfolk who crossed his path! We are often asked to provide affidavits for Baptismal and Confirmation Sponsors. We can only do this if a person is a registered, active and contributing member.
