For those who are unfamiliar with Lourdes, it is the place where the Blessed Virgin appeared to a poor fourteen year old girl, Bernadette Soubiroux. The first apparition occurred February 11, 1858 and there were eighteen in all, with the last taking place on July 16, Bernadette was sent with her younger sister to gather firewood when a beautiful lady appeared to her in a grotto called Massabielle. Bernadette was the only one to see the vision, although at times many other people were with her. On one of the visits, the vision told Bernadette to drink of the water of the spring in the grotto itself, the existence was unknown, but immediately water gushed forth. On another occasion, the apparition instructed Bernadette to tell the priest she wished a chapel to be built on the spot and processions to be made to the grotto. During her sixteenth vision, Bernadette asked the lady her name and finally the woman said, I am the Immaculate Conception. Now Bernadette was from a very poor family, the oldest of nine children and uneducated and it is highly unlikely that she knew about the document of The Immaculate Conception since it was only decreed four years earlier. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, the Immaculate Conception, is a destination for pilgrims from all over the world; drawn to the waters by miraculous healings and miracles. Around one million people come to Lourdes each year! Every evening, there are two processions, the first is the Blessed Sacrament procession. A bishop or priest carries the Blessed Sacrament followed by priests who concelebrate the rite, following them are the pilgrims, many who are in wheelchairs, many who are in beds barely able to sit up. They are lovingly pushed by the many volunteers who come to Lourdes each year just to offer their assistance to those in need. During the procession The Faithful Prayed there were meditations, hymns, and prayers in countless languages. It was humbling to see the outpouring of love for those who were ill or disabled, and the sheer number of so many people in need of healing. The procession ends in the underground Basilica of St. Pius X, a modern concrete building that can accommodate 25,000 pilgrims! (The day that I participated in the procession, there were approximately 15,000 pilgrims!) The second procession each evening is the Torchlight Marian Procession and is led by pilgrims bearing a replica of the statue of the Virgin Mary. Most people carry a candle, much like our procession during the Easter Vigil. The focus of this procession is the rosary, and all five decades are recited in many languages. How powerful an experience to be part of so many pilgrims all praying the Rosary and praising the Virgin Mary. One of the most powerful homilies I have heard was about a parent and son going on a pilgrimage to Lourdes. The son had a disability and was unable to walk, so they were going to Lourdes so that he would be healed. The priest giving the homily explained that he was praying every day to the Lord for wisdom and guidance for when they would return from Lourdes, with the son still unable to walk. As soon as they returned, the priest spotted the father and son, still in a wheelchair. With trepidation, he approached the father who exclaimed, Father, that was such a miraculous pilgrimage, my son is healed! For now my son is completely at peace with his disability! Many pilgrims go to Lourdes for physical healing, however, the Lord heals us in many other ways as well. This week, let us not only pray for the physical healing of others, but to allow God s grace to heal us in many other ways as well. Mary Kane Page 2 27th in Ordinary Time October 2, 2016

The fruit and vegetables are a welcome addition to the food that we distribute to those seeking assistance. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In the mid-1960s, many religious congregations that had maintained a custom of assigning new names to their members allowed a return to baptismal names. The practice stems from the origins of monastic life, when a desire to flee the world and its enchantments caused a severe break with family life and commitments. A new name signified that the old person had died and a new one was coming to life. Some orders even spread funeral palls over their entrants and tolled the funeral bell. On a practical level, in a crowded monastery of a few hundred monks or nuns, it made sense not to have six Brother Alfrics or nine Sister Clares. The one name, one person rule worked well. In more recent times, a young woman entering the convent might be given her parents names as a way of honoring their generosity, so Hilda might become Sister Philip Margaret after her father and mother. A cherished name in the order might be bestowed on a newcomer so that there would always be a Brother Owen around, or a young person might adopt the name of a beloved saint. A handful of religious congregations, like Mother Barat s Religious of the Sacred Heart, always used family names. Many monasteries still bestow a new name at the end of probation. Other religious institutes have revived the custom of changing their candidates names at the end of novitiate, although for the most part religious who were around at the time of the Council were happy to get their baptismal names back. A few, of course, cherished their acquired names and have held on to them, so convents still hold the creativity badge for naming. Where else today can you find great names today like Madeleva, Siena, and Celestina? Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Page 5 27th of Ordinary Time October 2, 2016

6 Jubilee Year of Mercy October 2, th in Ordinary Time Jubilee of Marian Devotion begins next Saturday How long, O LORD? (Habakkuk 1:2). With Habakkuk s question echoing across twenty-six hundred years, Respect Life finds all life claiming sanctuary in our hearts: unborn infant, senior citizen, immigrant and refugee, imprisoned and addicted, people burdened with illness and disabilities of body, mind, or spirit. Even Mother Earth, Pope Francis notes in Laudato Si, bears scars of disrespect for the life she nurtures and sustains. Life is still threatened, as in Habakkuk s day, with ruin and misery, destruction and violence,... strife and clamorous discord (see 1:3). Since our efforts so often seem ineffective, we unprofitable servants cry with the apostles, Increase our faith (Luke 17:10, 5). But Jesus reply might be paraphrased, Not quantity quality. Next weekend marks the Jubilee Year of Mercy s special devotion to Mary, whose willingness to shelter Jesus in her womb and stand at the foot of his cross bears witness to the qualities that Jesus expects our faith to manifest: the willingness to trust, to risk, and to dare to speak up for life. Bishop McGrath s Statement on the 2016 Elections As we approach this Fall s General Election, I know that many of you like myself are in the process of discerning the choices before us in the presidential race, as well as in many of the other races and issues that will be decided on November 8. I am writing to you today to put forward principles for your consideration in arriving at decisions that are consistent with Catholic teaching. 1. Every citizen who is eligible to vote must do so. It is a sacred trust, a grave responsibility. In casting a ballot, each person becomes a participant in our democratic process. Voting is a moral act, it expresses our values, our faith, and our hopes for our nation and world. 2. Be informed. Read and study the many issues and candidates that will appear on your ballot. There are no simple answers to the challenges that face our nation and our world. The United States is integrated into the society of nations and cannot act unilaterally. The good of the whole world and the welfare of people most at risk the common good must always be considered in the policies that govern the actions of our nation. 3. There are key moral and social issues that need to be considered in casting one s vote. The teaching of Pope Francis is clear that there are a number of concerns that must be included in moral decision-making. Among these are abortion, poverty, capital punishment, care for the environment, assisted suicide, and immigration. 4. There is no perfect candidate. There is no Catholic candidate. No candidate s position on the issues lines up consistently with the teaching of the Church. San Diego Bishop Robert W. McElroy notes the inherent complexity in casting a ballot: Voting for candidates is a complex moral action in which the voter must confront an entire array of competing candidates positions in a single act of voting. It is crucial that in voting for a candidate who supports the advancement of an intrinsic evil, Catholic voters not have the intention of supporting that specific evil, since such an intention would involve them directly in the evil itself. But voters will often find themselves in situations where one candidate supports an intrinsically evil position, yet the alternative realistic candidates all support even graver evils in the totality of their positions. 5. The Church may become directly involved in encouraging parishioners to vote one way or another on issues of moral import. This would include, for example, our support of Proposition 62, which would eliminate the death penalty, and our opposition to Proposition 66, which would expedite the implementation of the death penalty. 6. Every Catholic citizen has the responsibility to form their conscience by considering the complexity of the issues, the teaching of the Church, and their own relationship with the Lord. We are bound to vote according to our conscience. As Pope Francis stated in The Joy of Love, it is the role of the pastors to help form consciences, not to replace them. In closing, I entrust you all to the Lord, that you may be enlightened by the indwelling Holy Spirit and that you may participate as responsible citizens in casting your ballot on November 8. As you do so, please know that you are all in my prayers. Page 6 27th in Ordinary Time October 2, 2016
