Baptism Infant baptism is celebrated following completion of our parish Baptism Preparation Program. Registration occurs in the summer Homestead Road, Santa Clara, CA Phone: (408) ~ Website: Solemnity of the Holy Body & Blood of Christ On Monday I celebrated a committal service for Marian Eleanor Barrett at Gate of Heaven. A week earlier, Fr. George Mancha came to anoint Marian, and she was so happy to receive the Eucharist, her face glowed with joy. Everyone who loves the Eucharist can understand what is meant when Jesus said, "I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh." This Sunday, as the Church celebrate the solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, I invite you to reflect again: The Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist is the Source and Summit of the Life and Mission of the Parish and Church Organizations. (CRBC, 2006) We need to go back and forth to the source. In the life and mission of the Church, we need to constantly get the energy and strength from the source. Many sick brothers and sisters rejoice to receive the Eucharist by our pastoral care ministers. What a joy to receive the life of God here and now? We can partake of the life of divine right now. It's incredible! What can be the highest expression of faith? Eucharist is the summit. On Sunday we gather to offer this supreme expression of faith: the sacrifice of Jesus for our salvation. Thanks to God we can be part of this sacrifice. We offer ourselves as bread and wine, and wondrously by the Holy Spirit the bread and wine become the sacrament of Jesus body and blood that can transform us. Every time we take the body and blood of Christ we receive God's Spirit and our life can never be the same. The Eucharist effects a change in us. The Eucharist is our mission. What can be a better way to live and be united to The Lord, and proclaim His salvation to the world? The Church will always reach out to the world through the Eucharist. Only in Jesus the world can be saved, his life is given for the salvation of the world. The world needs divine sustenance. The Miracle of Lanciano made a deep impact in my journey of faith in the Eucharist. In 1999 I went to visit the tomb of Padre Pio with Msgr. Joseph Thang. On our pilgrimage from Rome to San Gioavanni, our car broke down. It was on the feast of All Saints. We ended up staying in Pescara and celebrated mass that day at the Cathedral of Santa Maria. But it turned out to be God s providence; we were less than few miles from the Eucharistic miracle of Lanciano. Here we could see the real Body and Blood of Jesus. Historically, it was in the city of Lanciano, Italy, around 700, a Basilian monk was assigned to celebrate Mass in the small church; the monk had doubts about the real presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. During the Mass, when he said the Words of Consecration "This is my body. This is my blood", with doubt in his soul, the priest is said to have seen the bread change into living flesh and the wine change into live blood which coagulated into five globules, irregular and differing in shape and size. Present day medical and scientific examination concluded they are real flesh tissue of the human heart and real blood type AB. (see Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano.) Therefore, on this Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, let us thank God for loving us so much by giving us a taste of heaven here and now. The number of donors, however, drops dramatically during this season. Hospitals find themselves short of blood supplies. But you can help! Plan to donate blood at our parish blood drive on Sunday, June 22. To give blood you must be at least 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 lbs., be in good health, and have eaten prior to donating. From start to finish, giving blood consists of four easy steps: Registration, Medical History, Donation, and Rest and Refreshments. You may make an appointment after the morning Masses or try a walk-in appointment. WE DID IT!! Thanks to the 491 parishioners and families who have made pledges of $175,000 to the 2014 Annual Diocesan Appeal. We are very grateful for your support. The Diocese goal of $133, 459 has been paid, so all future payments will come back to the parish. Remember, you have until December 31 to pay off the pledge. If you have any questions about our programs, contact Tracy Sevigny at RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Are you an adult seeking baptism? Or a baptized Christian seeking the full communion of the Catholic church? Or perhaps a baptized Catholic who wishes to complete initiation in the sacrament of confirmation? Youth Faith Formation Ongoing Faith Formation New Registration We provide ongoing faith formation for children age 3 (by December 1) through Junior High. The 3 s 1st grade meet 9-10 a.m., and the 2nd Jr. High meet 10:15-11:30 a.m. from September April. If you are new to our program, you may contact the Front Office (408) , ext. 0 and we will send you a registration packet or you may download one from our website. Ongoing Faith Formation Returning Registration If your child attended faith formation last year, you will receive a packet in August, which will include a database printout for you to sign and return, a calendar, and an invoice for fees. Sacramental Preparation Program We prepare second graders and older for the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist. They must have been enrolled in either Catholic School or our ongoing faith formation program the previous year. Please call the parish office (408) ext. 0 to make a registration appointment. High School Confirmation Registration If you are a high school student interested in participating in our High School Confirmation Process, please call our Front Office, (408) , ext. 0 and schedule a registration appointment. Baptism of School-Age Children If your child is seven years or older and unbaptized, we provide the Rite of Christian Initiation adapted for children. Please call the parish office (408) ext. 0 to make a registration appointment. In Search of Catechists & Aides Our catechetical programs could not function without the dedication of many catechist volunteers. We are looking for both adults and youth who feel called to this very important ministry. We will arrange your training and provide all materials. Our needs at this time are the following: Junior High team members (Sundays, 10:15-11:30am) 5th grade co-catechist (Sundays, 10:15-11:30am) High School Confirmation Team Members (Sundays, 5-6:30 p.m.) Call the Front Office, (408) , if God is calling you today. Vacation Bible Camp August 4 - August 8 9 a.m. - noon Join the fun, as our children learn about Jesus and the Bible while making fun crafts, playing wild games, learning how to live as Christians, while forming community! 5 MINISTRY NEWS Outreach Dinner Our next Outreach Dinner will be taking place today, Sunday, June 22, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in our Parish Small Hall. All Senior Citizens are invited to this Meal followed by BINGO. Food Collection Most of you are aware of the Community Ministry Collection Barrels that are located in our Church. During the month of June, we will continue to request Canned Soup, Pork & Beans, Chile, Macaroni & Cheese, Tomato Sauce and Canned Tuna. These are items that we do not receive often from the Second Harvest Food Bank. Please feel free to drop donations in the barrels in the Church, in the Foyer of the School or bring items to the Parish Office. Community Ministry Community Garden News Most of you are aware of the fact that we now have a Community Garden. What started out as a project organized by four wonderful 7 th grade Girl Scouts is now a working garden. Vegetable planting took place with the food being raised to be distributed through Community Ministry. We want you to know of two ways that we could use some help. 1. We are searching for a few volunteers who might be interested in helping with the watering of the garden, especially during the summer when school is not in session. 2. If you are interested in supporting the garden by purchasing an Engraved Brick for either $125 or $500 please contact the parish or school office by the end of this month. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Ordinary Time beckons, and so on this Sunday we surrender the last glimmers of paschal joy as we celebrate the renewal of our life around the table of the Eucharist. This feast reminds us that the goal of the catechumen s journey through Lent is not the baptismal font at Easter, but rather the experience of Pentecost. It is all about life lived in the Spirit s embrace in relationship to the Body of Christ, which is found both on the table and at the table. The season of confirmation is also drawing to a close, and this feast serves as a reminder that this sacrament, a solemn sending from font to table, is keyed to renewed vigor. Confirmation has sometimes been sadly misunderstood as a kind of graduation from religious formation, but it is nothing of the sort. It is about being led by the Lord Jesus to the place where the Spirit flourishes, and where the gifts of the Spirit are most easily detectable. After next week we will resume our consideration of the sacrament of confirmation, its rich and somewhat tangled history, its challenging theology, and its changing celebration. Rev. Stand and be Counted Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and a commitment in all its dimensions brings you advantages, recognition, and responsibilities of many kinds. Being a registered parishioner makes things much easier when it is time for infant Baptism, weddings, when asked to be a Baptismal or Confirmation Sponsor and even funerals. We are often asked to provide affidavits for Baptismal and Confirmation Sponsors. We can only do this if a person is a registered, active and contributing member. So, are you a registered parishioner? If not, please consider registering.
