I was somewhat early, so I was chatting for a bit with the receptionist. I was pretty far along in the pregnancy, so the obvious topic was the baby to come. She asked how long I intended to be off from work and I explained that I had decided a few years prior to leave work for a while to stay home with the kids. She seemed a bit puzzled at the choice and asked bluntly, Why would you want to do that, don t you feel like maid? (In her native country, where labor is cheap, most of the middleclass can afford maids, chauffeurs, nannies, and cooks. Employing them also helps the uneducated provide for their families, so it is a winning proposition for both parties.) I always felt that leaving a well-paid job to be with my little brood was such a gift, a privilege, which required quite a sacrifice, both financial for all of us, and for my career. I loved it, all of it, including the diaper changing, the cleaning up of the many messes, work I could have easily passed along to someone else with probably more onthe-job experience! Until that moment, I hadn t ever considered what I did as the work of a servant. In fact, I felt that being home with my children benefitted me more than it did them! In today s readings, we witness Isaiah and Paul being called or chosen by God to be His servants. I often marvel at how easily our prophets, apostles, Mary, the saints and martyrs and all Upcoming Second Offerings Your generosity is appreciated. *Denotes Parish Second Collection. 1/15 You Are My Servant Parish Office Closed Monday, January 16th for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday. Ethnic Minorities and Latin America the followers of Jesus, so easily said Yes! to God s call. I feel it s taking me a lifetime to fully commit. However, as I ponder my commitment to our [then] little family, the decision to, in essence, serve them, was simple. It was gratifying. It was intense. It brought me great joy. It strengthened my love for them in leaps and bounds each and every day and helped me appreciate the efforts of my parents to love and care for us. Perhaps we can experience that serving the Lord is similarly valuable. It is a given - as baptized and confirmed Catholics, we are chosen by God to be His servants. As we strive each day to be better people, to work for the poor, the oppressed, the troubled, the struggling, the outcast of God s people, we can hope our toil will bring us closer in our love for God and for one another. We will appreciate all the good with which He has blessed us. We will not feel like laborers but instead ardent and privileged followers, perhaps even apostles. Monday is Martin Luther King Day. We are reminded of how a modernday servant of the Lord sacrificed a quiet, comfortable life to answer God s call to serve Him and lift up God s oppressed people. Let us be inspired by King s example and to answer as he did, Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will as we strive for equality and justice for all people. Lillian Kwiatkowski Our Second Collection for the Mentasti Scholarship Fund was $2, Thank you for your continued generosity! Page 2 Second in Ordinary Time January 15, 2017

For those who are spiritually prepared, they will receive the Sacraments of Initiation, (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist) during the Easter Vigil. RCIA (Adapted for Children), January 15th Attend 10:30am Mass with your family. Dismissal to Parish Ministry Center after homily. Do you feel God s call to share your faith with others? Have you thought about becoming a catechist for our Children s Liturgy of the Word on mornings? A catechist is a person of faith who responds to that call, and passes on the traditions and teachings of our Church to others. Our Children s Liturgy of the Word allows our children to be in a focused environment that opens their hearts and minds to hear and to respond to God s Word in an age appropriate manner. The fruit and vegetables are a welcome addition to the food that we distribute to those seeking assistance. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As soon as Christmas ends, people begin planning for Easter! Originally, the source of our Paschal Triduum was but a single liturgy extending from Saturday sundown to sunrise on Easter. The two days leading up to the liturgy were days of fast, not only for the elect, but for the church preparing to baptize them. A fifthcentury pope explained that the church imitated the apostles, who were in hiding with their grief from the arrest of Jesus, and therefore sacraments, even penance, were forbidden. Inevitably, though, people wanted to come together, and so eventually a Liturgy of the Word developed for Good Friday. This was the first step toward today s shape of the Triduum, and gradually new ideas were embraced, including the veneration of the cross and a simple Communion service. Interestingly, the Word remained central, since we know that in those days the pope did not receive Communion at this liturgy, even though the faithful had that option. In the other churches of Rome, priests and people received Communion under both species. Although the custom of Communion on Good Friday took hold, it did not endure past the Middle Ages. The central liturgies of the year slowly unraveled and disappeared from parish life. Remember that there were no seminaries in those days, and books were a rare luxury. Most priests could only manage to celebrate a simple low Mass, and few parishes could afford the ritual books that would guide a priest through the complex forms. Holy Week remained important in private devotion, but for a time the liturgies virtually disappeared. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Page 5 Second in Ordinary Time January 15, 2017
